Yes, what they did was stupid and may meet your definition of vandalism. But (if) those iPhones can be fixed with a simple restore ($0 in actual damage)
There is a cost associated with having to take a person off of the sales floor to babysit a Back of House laptop on the sales floor for the 15-20 minutes it takes to restore the special image that Apple retail devices use.

Hacking the equipment would make the store managers a little unhappy, also, more work for the employees to have to restore the equipment.

They were just using some scare tactics.

If it keeps these kids from ending up with thong bikinis on their heads and stealing, I'm all for it. Nothing resets the moral compass like a brown trousers moment.:D From the article, it seems at least one of them will straighten up and fly right. At least for a while.

Seems like a fair trade off to me. The Apple employees will have to reimage the iPhones. And the teens will have to buy new tidy whiteys.:p

hmmmmmm

maybe they shudda not screwed with the iphones

I agree with Dawg on this one.

Damn Ankle Biters!

By jailbreaking the phone within the store is the same as vandalizing other people's property; kids got what they deserved; if it were me, I'd get the parents to go to parenting school.

Sending the parents to 'Parenting School' isn't going to deter (the) teens from misbehaving. Teens are rebellious - they are gonna do something no matter what the parents say or do. The only thing that may work is punishing the kids that did this directly.

Easily fixed by restoring the phone.

And quite similar to the same games people play by deleting apps, and changing things on display machines to irritate/embarrass stores.

On the Macs, booting from an image easily solves the problem while the phones may require actually forcing the store employees to walk around the store.

A horrid turn of events for todays employees, the wear and tear on the body cause by walking and thinking.

But why should they have to do anything, but for the ignorance of others??

Yes, employees that aren't problem solvers and unable to solve the problems of the ignorant.

Nor can they actually walk and do something without complaining.

Sounds like the employees in a customer service center.

You people amuse me.

“You violated my rights… I’m going to sue…Waa, waa, waa.”

Obviously written by someone with no actual knowledge of the US court system. Probably someone heard about the ‘woman who won a lot of money after she spilled hot coffee on her lap in the drive-thru.’

You have been watching TV too much.

You think you have a case? Be prepared to pay up front. There will always be an unscrupulous lawyer waiting to take a retainer and then some. Do you have any idea of the cost of a lawyer to file a suit like this? In addition, you have to pay for depositions, costs and paperwork fees. It will be YEARS before it ever comes to court. Lawyers don’t work for free and they don’t work for a percentage of the settlement unless it fits certain parameters. Then, be prepared to pay the costs of the defendant if you are found to be guilty of filing a frivolous lawsuit.

And in the unlikely scenario that the corporation loses this case, who is going to pay for this? Not the corporation - YOU and I will, as a price increase or in the drop in the value of my stock.

Time for a reality check.

It's time to stop blaming circumstances, like age, economic status, or bad parenting.

Start taking personal responsibility for your actions.
