I have absolutely no interest in an AR/VR headset although I suspect that's more about me not knowing the potential use cases. Having said that, if it resembles the "brick on a strap" design that seems to be prevalent in the current generation of these devices, I won't really care what they can do. Hopefully Apple can come up with a more elegant solution.

When I was a teen in the mid sixties.......

Oh, never mind.
Yeah yeah, you guys got sex drugs & rock & roll. By the time I was a teen The Bastards had already come along and outlawed all those perspective-enhancing activities, & we got HIV, the War on Drugs, and the Satanic Panic lol. In these enlightened times we’ve replaced mind-expanding with fantasy violence. Maybe it’s no surprise that so many here can’t imagine what a possible use for a Mixed Reality headset could be, beyond FPS gaming. Perhaps AR/VR will open up new avenues for a new generation to explore ideas far afield.

I’m continuously baffled by these customer retention numbers for iPhones. There are so many great options out there, and the iPhone is just one of those options. Android is amazing these days.

Now, if someone has tried both platforms but prefers an iPhone, well there you go. But I’d wager that most of these people have ever tried Android in the first place. I believe in giving something a fair go before you make a choice.

Almost every person I know that has an iPhone has never tried Android, and just prefer to stick with what they know. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has seen this behavior.
It’s the same for android fans though too. The majority of my coworkers are staunch ANTI-Apple folks, but they have never tried an Apple device. I had a friend buy a 10 year old used iPad once and he just whined incessantly about how crappy it was in comparison to his brand new, top of the line, pixel and he patted himself on the back for being open-minded about platforms. I had an aneurism every time he spoke a word about it.

sure, it’s true about Apple product users too, but there is a difference.

I tell the android fanboys all the time: just owning one Apple device wont impress you - usually. Apple products increase in utility with each additional product category you own. That GENERALLY is NOT the case with android. While each product may be comparable by itself, the ecosystems and longevity is not. That is where - even if android users have “tried” an Apple product, I don’t consider that truly using Apple products. And in those cases, they may be better off with android, truthfully. Because they don’t want the ecosystem.

Apple needs to pump the brakes on this project if they can’t even win over the teens with the prospect of shiny new technology.

Meanwhile teens are leaving their phone behind when they go out with friends and instead bringing 2000s-era point and shoot cameras. Really. It’s all about the aesthetic and connecting with people in person instead of being glued to your phone. Which sounds like the exact opposite of what Apple is trying to do with this headset which one of the tentpooe feature is rumored to be communication. The pandemic fried the teens brains on Zoom/FaceTime and they’re striving for in-person relationships and touch and smell and going out together. Actual reality vs. this “realityOS” BS. Is Apple finally losing the kids? They’re even losing me on this one and I’m getting into my late 30s now, firmly a millennial.

Teens that are interested in VR headsets, use it for gaming. Apple was never good at gaming.

I also have my doubts that 88%+f the teens plan that their next smartphone will be an iPhone. Why? Since I do not believe that 88% of the US teens can afford one.

Asking anyone right now what they think of VR headsets is like asking the general public before the iPhone what they thought of smartphones: "bad web experience, I want the real web.... I have a laptop for that"

"Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" People don't know what they want until you show it to them.” – Steve Jobs

Shows you how fragile so many people are.
They don't want a product, not due to anything actually about the product, but are worried about what others will think of them for using/wearing the product.

What happened to all the bold modern talk about doing what you like/want and not caring what others think of you as that's their problem not yours.

"I don't want to look like an idiot / I won't look cool in this / etc etc"

So sad it's all about what others think about you that is your concern.
If someone does not like you due to what you are wearing, then you have the wrong friends in the 1st place.

Looks at teen Apple Watch ownership in the year after launch…

Looks at surveyed teen interest in VR before Apple product is launched…

Curious how the author came to the conclusion “it doesn’t bode well for Apple”.

Using the same stats, the Apple Watch “didn’t bode well” for Apple either, yet here we are

I don’t understand why Apple would release a half-baked AR headset. Usually they release things that are good to go. Or at least cancel them if they’re not ready.

I also like my iPhone and Apple Watch and have no interest in an AR/VR headset.
If something is already popular it will attract teens, this study just shows that they even less interest with tech that hasn't been established, and logically it would be the same for consumers. People don't spend money that easily. iPhones are well known among teens, this however is the news media grasping at straws to show they achieved something. :D

The percentage of iPhone users amongst teens in Europe is a lot more even with Android I’d say. It’s no wonder it’s higher in the US let’s be honest.

Not surprised the interest in VR is low but let’s face it, they are expensive devices at this point. Wasn’t Apple apparently going to be charging £3k?! How is that appealing to teenagers?

That's part of the problem, yes.

I hate iPhones; everything about them is cringe; from the fact that every lemming has one like some brainwashed cult follower, to the fact that iOS is always gimped in some hilarious fashion, how the hardware is held back (no MicroSD card, are you effing serious?) etc. I'll never own one. I had an iPod, and I hated it just as much (awful battery life).

But I built my Hackintosh and I absolute love Mac OS, especially Apple's laptops. It's pretty pathetic how Apple's crappy portable FASHION devices get so much praise but their best product (Mac OS) still gets completely wrecked PC's dominance with windows (laptops included). Most people have it backwards too; those who do have an Iphone typically dont ever want to deal with a Mac. WTF? My girlfriend is just like that; has an iPhone, an Apple watch but won't get a MacBook and bring it all together.

Kiddie peer pressure is a thing. One of my nephews switched from Android to iPhone just to fit in.

I have an iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad but can’t use a Mac because they can’t do what I need them to do. Don’t assume everybody has the same needs or uses iPhones because they care what others think.

On VR/AR there is lack of interest because people still don’t know enough about this space. Other surveys have been done like this (some from Nielsen) and people are just uninformed on VR/AR products, what they are like and have no opinion on them.

Today and even before COVID they were not easy to causally try before you buy which I think is required to get an idea of their value. Some retails stores had them on display, fewer had demo booths (likely by appointment) to try, but it’s a medium that mostly relies on knowing someone who has a product.

Nice windup.

Not everyone cares what other people think, nor is everyone a tech enthusiast.

Besides, your last sentence completely contradicts your entire argument anyways.

Teens aren't so sure... about a product that no one has seen, knows the exact use case for, or how much it costs? Color me shocked
