It is about Tesla... I don't have any jealousy? Just no desire to buy one or any car that does not support Apple CarPlay. I'd be lost without it.

We recently started looking for my wife’s new company car (here in the UK).

The 2 things at the top of my wife’s must haves were space and EV range (she currently has a Hyundai Kona EV.

We tested the EQA & EQB, followed by the Model Y.

That evening, we were chewing the fat about the cars and deciding what to try next, when I asked here “What’s in your list of cars, that will give you more than the Tesla?”.

On her 1st and 2nd must have features the Tesla won hands down, but when you then add the Tesla supercharger network into the mix and it dawned on both of us that the answer to my question, was literally no.

The supercharger network I think was what sealed the deal, as it removes a hell of a lot of anxiety from day to day planning, let alone cross country or planning a trip to Europe.

I was pretty convinced she’d end up with a Mercedes, because, well, it’s a Mercedes, but once you‘ve experienced driving a Tesla, it’s tough not to place the order IMHO.

"Pomp and circumstance" is the perfect way to put it as internal combustion engines are for people who like their cars like marching bands: loud and slow.
I call them trombones. When they get upset, I call them sad trombones.

What did you think when you drove the Plaid?
I didn't drive a Plaid, it was a P100D which was the fastest one at the time.

As far as I know, the Plaid is just an even faster P100D with updated drivetrain components, so I imagine my P100D experience won't be that far off. If I get the opportunity to drive a Plaid I certainly will take it though 😂

Along the I-95 corridor, sure. Getting from Florida to Maine is not an issue.

There are a lot of people who don't live in the world you inhabit. It's a big country. In a majority of it, EV infrastructure sucks.

If an EV works for you, that's great. I'm glad you're happy with it. There are all kinds of arguments over the environmental impact of EVs (Mining rare earth metals, electrical generation, wear and tear on roads and tires due to EV weight) vs gas powered vehicles.

But it's not for everyone everywhere yet. Not by a long shot.

i can take detour routes and there will still be plenty of superchargers to choose from.

as for the weight myth, the most popular selling model 3 weights as much as your gasoline sedan.

in fact, my model y actually weight LESS than a mercedes gle or a bmw x5.

No worries, us electric drivers still appreciate last generation cars; you guys always give me a little boost when you want to try to outrun me at the light and I leave you in the dust 😂
I don't do that with my car I'm afraid, I enjoy driving it almost exclusively for the genuine pleasure of driving it.

Sure, a modern electric car would smoke me in a drag race, but I just want to cruise about with the windows down and enjoy the nice wub wub wub wub coming from the engine in front of me.

How much time have you spent behind the wheel of a Tesla, actually using the navigation system?
I'm not the OP but I had a Model 3 for 4.5 years and sold it back in May. I liked the nav system but have been using a Volvo with AAOS for the past few months and really like the Google Maps integration. Traffic updates seem to be a lot faster with Google Maps. And if you use Google Maps to plan out trips, there's no need to share the waypoints and replan the trip in the car, it all automatically syncs over to the car. The same is true when using CarPlay and a Mac or iPhone.

I've found that integration to be a big win over proprietary systems. You can do all the planning at home and then get in the car and drive away.

Pomp and circumstance? You mean annoying your neighbors while everyone around you on the road rolls their eyes?

Don’t think you know what pomp and circumstance means. Either way, precisely nobody is impressed with V8s anymore; it’s not 2004. A V8 motor is retro tech.
My car is pretty factory spec, and I'm definitely not an ass who would seek to disrupt or otherwise be inconsiderate to neighbours or other road users. Within my estate, all neighbours I've met have been highly complimentary of my car.

Your claim of "precisely nobody is impressed with V8s anymore" is a bit off. If you're not impressed then that's cool, you do you, but I can say with certainty there are plenty of people who still like and love ICE cars.

We just took our Model Y on a three week road trip from the UK down to and around Italy. The only hiccup we had was when we had to change plans and didn't have enough to get to the next Supercharger from Pisa, so had to stop at a "normal" CCS charger between Pisa and Florence. Turns out that Italy is where the UK was about 5-10 years ago in terms of charging infrastructure - everything is done by different RFID keys or, if you're lucky, an app! And there are no instructions on how to get or use these things and nobody around knew. After about an hour another Tesla driver, from Germany, helped us out. Turns out the app we'd downloaded to try to use with the charger network of the same name didn't work with that network - but did work with the other one! 🤦‍♂️

After that we made sure we could always get to a Supercharger. We did also notice that mapping data (for both Apple Maps and Tesla) was very poor in Italy (can any Italian locals corroborate?)

Everywhere else I've been in Europe with it (France, Germany, Switzerland - for some definitions of Europe) was seamless.

so couple of minutes on your phone while sitting on your couch vs couple minutes sitting in your car? either way you spend the same amount of time planning your trip.

Probably the same time, but I'd rather do it beforehand, especially if you're wrangling kids into the backseat, packing luggage, checking things off like "did you remember to...", etc.

On a long trip with multiple charging stops, this is harder to preplan but with AA/CP at least your waypoints are already in the system. Plus with AA/CP ABRP is available though obviously that's less needed with the Supercharger network.

This is exactly what I needed!

I have solar panels as well as cheap electricity between 00:30 and 04:30.
During the summer I want to divert all excess solar to charging my Tesla. But I also want to use the cheaper overnight rates. Ideally I'd have the charge limit set to 80% or something during the night and 100% during the day (I have my charger set to charge unconditionally between 00:30 and 04:30) to optimise for this. I've been trying to do this manually for a while but keep forgetting. I started looking into writing scripts to automate the Tesla but that seems more involved than I have time for.

Now I've set up a couple of automations that should (hopefully - we'll see) do exactly what I wanted :)

As someone who has children....this is dramatic. You don't even have to remember to do this as your brain simply tells you after buckling in to think of your destination and say to yourself - time to set the waypoint. If your children are an issue with mapping once you sit in the drivers seat....you aren't going anywhere anyways. Besides, Tesla's nav pre-plans all supercharger stops which Apple Maps isn't doing for me. I'll take that over being able to map my final destination from the toilet before departure.
