lol of course they do. Depending of the MFi device they want fixed $ costs or % of sales per device. CarPlay belongs to Apple Mafia(MFi) licensing program which you have to enroll, negotiate and sign a NDA.

Apple would love to get 8% of Teslas car sales:
As someone who has previously been on MFi projects, I can promise you that you are entirely wrong - there is no negotiating 😉

I guarantee you Volkswagen and the other car makers are not giving apple 8% of their revenue to add CarPlay. Its somewhat surprising you would suggest this seriously.

My guess is Apple hardware and software licensing in total is at most about $10 per car - the real expense is that the consoles need higher quality components (faster CPU, higher quality screen, capacitive touch layer) and need them in in automotive-grade parts (e.g. can bake in the hot sun for years). They then likely need to do a certification of their implementation to qualify for the CarPlay license.

As much as the use of cobalt is a concern, it's a bit bloody rich coming from a guy whose family gained its wealth through emerald mines.

Cook is a piece of work to have not bothered to meet w/Musk. There is no harm in a talk, plus that talk could have born other fruits...
There's no benefit to Apple to openly talk with Tesla. Musk can't keep his mouth shut, so there's no way Apple would try to talk secretly.

Tesla is still a "toy" startup company and Musk's shenanigans are barely tolerated by regulators. Involving Musk with Apple in ANY way would have all the institutional investors on Apple's board out for Tim's job. Because those investors don't tolerate Musk's games. If Apple ever goes after Tesla, it will be WITHOUT Musk, that's almost certain.

Tesla delivered 500,000 cars in 2020. The worldwide car deliveries were almost 64,000,000, most of them had engines. Frankly, Tesla is already getting destroyed by cars with engines whether it be due to cost reasons or people not wanting electric cars or not wanting a Tesla because they are poorly made, ugly, and take too long to charge.

Tesla has fallen short of its own goals, pretty much consistently. $1B profit isn't going to get it done and again, not everyone wants to drive a Tesla. There WILL BE and are other electric options. I mentioned the Taycan on the high end, the Mach E on the lower end and many more coming. Car manufacturing is hard (As Tesla found out) and is fiercely competitive.

Tesla hasn't been able to turn their head start into significant profitability and has been riddled with its own delays, production problems, and cancellations.

You seem to think the game is over. This is just getting started. Tesla is a tiny, tiny auto manufacturer with under 1% of total deliveries worldwide.
Mark Spiegel? Is that you?? Haha. You are uneducated, mate.
