To me a positive opinion by an owner is more valuable and has a better weighting than a negative opinion by a non-owner. Does that make sense?
Neither has any probitive value at all. There are plenty of independent reviews by car mags and reviewers. There are service records kept by the dealers and automakers that are aggregated by sources like Consumer Reports to give quantitative and qualitative reports on reliability, as well as subjective owner feedback. To me, and me alone, the statement, "I have a Tesla, and it's great" is someone who may not want to let on that his experience has been less than fortuitous, given the cash outlay.
Does that make sense?

OK I see what you're saying.

If someone came to me and said I like XYZ product because I own it and it's great. And that's all they said - I'd smile and go about my day. They need to tell me why, give me more information, and if they did I might ask questions and continue to learn about why they like what they said. But if that's all they said, that has little value.

Same for if someone who doesn't own the XYZ product and hates it because of a reason that isn't the product - I'm not going to put a lot of value in that if I'm considering XYZ product unless that reason means a lot to me. (Company dumps a ton of sewage into the ocean - that would matter to me and I'd have to look into that as to a possible reason for me not to buy XYZ product).

Gimme more information! I want data! :p

It actually doesn’t make sense. Car reviews are the last place I go when deciding a car purchase. When I bought my Tesla I went to once source a trusted advisor. I actually knew about 20 people who have Teslas. And they all said it’s great.

Of course you pick your path.

Used to be a big fan of the Car & Driver magazine - still not terrible. Then it was CarWoW on YouTube for awhile - now I enjoy watching Hagerty (Youtube).

But yeah preferred talking to actual people who used the vehicles by a large margin. It's why I bought my first EV - a friend of mine had a similar year model.

You mean publications that profit from the more clicks they get from explosive headlines?

Consumer Reports put Tesla in top 10 car manufacturers that make the most reliable new cars just last month:

You listed Rivian as one car that you would purchase over a Tesla. Rivian is placed on the bottom of Consumer Reports list. You clearly aren't buying a car based on how good or how reliable it is, you're buying a car based on your political interests. Those who are in a market to buy a new car would benefit much more from hearing from an actual owner vs someone who doesn't own the car but has a political take on the car.

Tesla created the software driven vehicle. Now you may not like Tesla approach or the look of the car etc, and to me that’s valid. I buy the car and the company behind the car. Not the leanings of the management team.

100%

-They open up their patents
-Open up their supercharger network
-They would gladly license their FSD software
-They sell parts near at cost + service center isn't a money maker unlike other car companies.
-They don't nickel and dime every single software feature they add (which some are game changing features that other companies would sell for >$1k or subscription).
-They created a 48V architecture, wrote a book and literally distributed that book for free to all other major manufacturers so that the industry can switch over to a superior architecture.

and on and on and on.

Tesla has been more ethical and pro consumer than not compared to most other car companies.

And top of all that, the product is just on another level.

I'd shoot myself in the face before I gave a penny to benefit Mr. Musk. period.
