They could even follow the UI example used by the media window. CarPlay can be implemented in that medium sized window allowing access to all the Tesla functions and following a well-known UX.
It shouldn’t be like the media window it should be more like the map.

Do you have MCU1? Maybe it has changed with the newer MCUs. All Teslas that I have ever driven turn off Wifi when you shift into gear. You can then manually turn it back on by tapping on the LTE icon and selecting the hotspot.
If Tesla did add CarPlay they probably won’t add it to MCU1.

I might consider a Model 3 as my next car if they do, but I also really need a HUD.
HUD is overrated. The windshield glass is not as tough at least for BMW’s (chips will happen very quickly) and you cannot use polarized sunglasses. I had to find a pair of non polarized, but I dont miss it at all. I added a Model 3 in 2018 and Y in 2020. I dont miss the HUD at all and appreciate my front glass looking almost new.

Imagine having two maps on screen. It could be confusing.

Yes, impossible to solve. No way that they can do what every other car manufacturer does and blank out the built-in map.

It would also be impossible to do something like what Tesla used to do, and display the built-in map in a removable window.

Oh, wait - Tesla already has two completely different maps displayed at the same time (at least on Model S, if you have navigation engaged). I guess Elon disagrees with us that this is a problem.

And that's why I want CarPlay, and not their own OS. I don't want Musk to decide what I can and cannot use in my car.

I miss CarPlay. Example: using Audible I have to fumble and fiddle with my phone.

And Tesla's Spotify interface is inferior to the iOS phone app. I find it difficult to use. For example, tapping on the "X artist Radio" doesn't actually start the radio for that artist.

With V10 software it'd be very easy to implement with a floating window.

No. There are so many considerations to factor in. For one, you have many volume systems managing many different audio sources. Ringtone from plugged in iPhone via wire (maybe passenger's iPhone), ringtone from the driver's phone connected over bluetooth to Tesla's software, there's Siri's separate volume control, Tesla's navigation voice has a separate volume control than Apple's navigation voice, Tesla's media player volume, there's Apple's CarPlay music volume, every CarPlay app has its own volume control, etc... how does the user change each of these in an intuitive way if both systems are being used simultaneously? When you scroll down on the left scrollwheel, does it control Tesla's volume or Apple's volume if both are playing sound at the same time?

That's just one of MANY issues you'll encounter in implementing CarPlay on top of Tesla's current system.

All those things are handled the same was it is Bluetooth! You're over complicating this, all CarPlay does is become another music source like Bluetooth - it's not more integrated, it's a very simple basic system that involves mirroring a video out put from the phone to a box on the screen and you press the buttons with the touch screen interface. It's no different to using your phone over bluetooth except you get a bigger touch interface to interact with. I'm not sure why people find CarPlay so hard to understand.

Wait, you mean TSLA didnt support CarPlay? Guess that makes sense, but I thought you could just stream music via bluetooth and have basic controls, heck, even my Hyundai supports both basic bluetooth with controls, and CarPlay.

Good news, nevertheless, if true!

So, as someone who just picked up a Model Y and has used CarPlay since the beginning (I've used both aftermarket and stock head units with wireless and wired CarPlay), I've become very used to CarPlay and it's features and pitfalls.

Coming from a 2017 Mazda CX-5, where I actually disassembled the dash and switched out the usb hub to get CarPlay, I don't really find myself wanting it with the Model Y at all. It has great navigation, and I find the voice assistant from Tesla to be much less frustrating than Siri so it's not really a need. I'm also enjoying being able to actually see my text messages in a physical form instead of being mandated to the CarPlay interface. I do get those that want it (especially for Apple Maps, Waze, and some third-party apps), but I think the funny thing is I always found my phone better to use for those over the hamstrung CarPlay interface.

As far as those wondering why Tesla doesn't add it - I'm pretty sure it's a lot more complicated then Tesla just simply adding it. I believe the radio and usb hub has to be certified by the MiFi program (https://mfi.apple.com), which explains why many manufacturers (Mazda, Ford, etc) actually made you physically replace the usb hub in select older vehicles if you wanted CarPlay support. I've done that in 2 of my vehicles so far. I could see some of the terms and fees of the program to be a bit limiting to Tesla, which may be at the root of the issue.

On the topic of the thread - Looking forward to Apple Music coming!

No. Your suggestion was to implement a floating window. If you’ve watched the CarPlay integration guide, Apple requires the volume knobs to take precedent in controlling CarPlay audio.

If it’s a floating window, a user may have a Tesla navigation running giving voice directions when they plug in their phone to turn on CarPlay. Since volume controls are now mapped to CarPlay, how does the user turn down Tesla’s navigation volume?

Currently, over bluetooth, Tesla maps the volume to control bluetooth audio UNLESS the Navigation voice is currently saying something. At that point the user can scroll the wheel to turn down the voice. With CarPlay, Tesla won’t have that option since CarPlay takes over the volume control wheel on the steering wheel.

Plus there’s a bunch of small requirements that CarPlay wants like a dedicated Siri hard button.

And finally, managing a floating window probably isn’t a good idea for the driver who needs quick access to Tesla controls like the AC.

Very easy to suggest “oh it’s simple to implement!” when you didn’t look through the documentation.

Tesla already has a separate volume setting for navigation instructions in the nav settings. I don't really see the problem.

The user has to manually navigate to settings via 3-4 taps and a swipe to change Nav volume.

While driving.

And you don’t see a problem?

Also carplay maps nav won’t be able to “duck” the music volume if being played from Tesla

How often do you change nav voice volume? I don't think I have ever changed it. And why wouldn't Tesla be able to lower the volume of the Carplay source just like they do today with Bluetooth sources?

This isn't a hard problem to solve. You're overthinking this.

A lot.

When I play music, I leave the Nav voice as is.

When I play audio books or podcasts (anything talk related), I change the volume of Nav voice depending on if I really want to hear over the nav voice or if the audio book is boring so I rather have Nav louder.

When people in my car fall asleep during a road trip, I lower it.

Maybe you don’t change it a lot, but plenty of drivers do.

You’re paying 0 attention to the UX. Paying close attention to UX is something that made Apple a 2 trillion dollar company.

That makes no sense, given that the Tesla mutes other audio sources when the nav voice is speaking.
