ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

Anybody have any idea why this command does not return anything for me?
"ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6"

Tried in different shells.

When I just run it without the sed and everything after this is what I get: | | | | | | "EDID" = <ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff>

Very bad image retention.
Day 1 rMBP 2.6Ghz/16GB/512GB

Apple have contacted me and have requested more info regarding the issue.

I had an LG screen. Moderately bad ghosting. After a week waiting for AppleCare to call me back they said it was normal, expected behaviour so would not be fixing it.

I took it into a store and the Genius ordered a replacement. Hoping to get that today.

Returned my LG, ghosting, just got a replacement. It's a Samsung. Nothing obviously wrong with it although I think on the LG the blacks were blacker and the whites were whiter (very, very slight yellowing on the white maybe) that could of course be my imagination or that I'm just looking harder. Fingers crossed I might be keeping this one.

Will sleep better tonight.

As a side note, it came with Mountain Lion pre installed, was half expecting it to be Lion. Just a small (firmware?) update.

So I have a Samsung. Woot!
2.3/16/256 and it looks great!

LSN (Sammy) on the 5th and thankfully final rMBP.

I've seen 3 LGs and 2 Samsungs and the Samsung panels are superior in color uniformity (no yellow tint, or at least less prone to it) and apparent contrast. They also appear brighter to than the LGs. And, of course, no retention issues with the Samsung panels that I had.

Honestly, the difference was significant enough to me that I would not have accepted an LG.

Just got mine, ordered online. LG Panel.

So far colors look good, whites are perfect and ive tried to put a white page with safari for 10 mins with a dark grey background, so far no ghosting or retention.

What other tests can I do?

All UI animations are perfect. Maybe they fixed the issues?

Where do I enter this-I open the console type in the bold part in the first post and nothing happens? What should I do? Here's a screenshot of me entering the command and then pressing enter:

I was convinced that my LG screen was perfect and that I had no image retention issue until I ran this test. Now I can see that my LG screen does display image retention. If Samsung screen's don't do this it makes me feel like I got something inferior to someone who paid the same money and received a Samsung screen.

I did that test 3 times, 5 , 10, 20 minutes and no image retention at all, its a LG display, no yellowish tints, i do rather say, it looks more warm than a samsung screen. I believe that there is IR on some of the LG screens, but this doesnt mean that all LG screens are bad. Its a small precentual of millions. Meight be 200 or a little more and almost all retina are LG, short ammount are Samsung. I am not saying that all Samung are bad, but also on them was errors encountered.

My rMBP just came in! 2.6/16/512 :apple:

Ordered August 10, Shipped August 17, Arrived this morning! (Aug. 22) Shipped to Tampa, FL

and best of all...it is a Samsung display! :)

How can you tell what week it was manufactured in?

Most likely week 32 or 33. What's the first 5 digits of the serial?

Welp, the image retention on my week 33 LG panel did indeed get worse. It's now definitely visible during normal usage.

I'm still within my 14 day return period, so I called Apple today, and they're shipping me a replacement and sending a shipping label for the current unit. I've got 14 days to ship the current one back after I receive the label, so there should be some overlap with the replacement, which is great as I need the machine for school.

Ah well, at least Apple customer service continues to be friendly, efficient, and extremely helpful.
