AOD is terrific. It's a shame it took so long to come to the iPhone. I have my wallpaper disabled since 16.2. Much better IMO.

It is seemingly once again only a vocal minority of tech bloggers (and commenters!) who claim to be "distracted" (come on, really?) by iPhone 14's AOD with wallpaper - likely the same crowd who complained for years about the notch, which no ordinary user minded. To each their own, of course, and it's nice to have the new toggles. As with the notch, those of us who enjoy, or don't think much about, AOD with wallpaper are simply less vocal about it. The feature works exactly as intended, doesn't consume much battery, and - for me - has been a value added over the 13.

I tried the wallpaper off, but there is some delay sometimes on pick up for screen to turn on.

It’s very slight… I don’t know maybe it’s a subjective thing, but I find the experience much less jarring already having the wallpaper showing.

Giving it another go to see if 16.2 made improvement to it.

I can’t even fathom turning it off on the watch. AOD was a game changer on watches and my series 5 gets the same battery life as my series 2 without... which is a full day charge. I charge every night while Sleeping.
Yeah that's fair, I know lots of folks really like it and it's definitely a brilliant feature.

I have the S8 now (with AOD off) and its battery is fantastic, can get a full day, night, and another day out of it before the battery starts to get a little stressed. Really brilliant technology compared to the original Watch.

Yeah I keep it off on the Watch for the increased battery life, it definitely makes an improvement to the battery life. I had it on for a couple of years, but noticed some burn-in due to me using the same watch face. Switching it off made a big improvement to the "ghost" effect over the course of a year though, so it can be somewhat reversed.
Same… I turned off the AOD on the watch. Makes a huge difference when it comes to battery. Plus, it’s winter here, and cold, which usually means long sleeves. Seems pointless to have an AOD when you can’t glance at it anyway because it’s covered by a shirt

Aha yeah the long sleeve is relatable! I'm in Scotland so short sleeves are a rare thing to see 😂

The always-on display is excellent on my 14 Pro Max. I charge my device every other day with everything turned on.

My always-on wallpaper is current weather. It would be cool if there were occasional animations (with sound) with this wallpaper. Lightning, birds,...

Notice any burn in?

I turned it off on the watch and phone and after a day of use it definitely is a noticeable percentage difference for both, for me. Obviously not a scientific test, but my wife found the same on her phone and watch - maybe 20% extra battery life by the end of the day.

I don't need the AOD, but for people who do, it is a pretty efficient implementation.
It literally is not, and you have no idea what you're talking about. So tired of people spreading this kind of nonsense.

False, of course.

I'm keeping wallpapers on. I was going to turn them off recently on a day when I traveled for the holidays but forgot to. Used my phone heavily all day and never ran out of juice.

After seeing someone here post a concern about screen burn on their 14 Pro, I helped may daughter turn off AOD on her 14 Pro Max. She hasn't missed AOD at all. I recently got an Apple Watch Series 8 and I turned off AOD on that as well.

Don't you think that would have been one of the major concerns when this feature was being developed and tested? I've seen posters with the same "concerns" about burn in on the Apple Watch. I use the same watch face 99% of the time with AoD on and burn is not something I'm remotely worried about.

I really like the wallpaper off option, it's enough for me to use it now.

It would be great if Apple could offer greater customisation of the feature in the future though, like let me choose a "Home Screen for the AOD mode", where I can customise the size of elements. If there are fewer pixels illuminated, I suppose the battery draw would be minimal. I'm also not fussed about seeing playback controls on the screen, makes it look cluttered when it's off.

It would be great if Apple could also provide a more obvious "you have a notification" indicator, similar to how it works on some Android handsets with the LED indicators. Please give me a small green / blue light between the display holes or something.
One of the biggest things I want is a notifications change. I'd like to have the option to hide notifications, but want to see it come in. So, I get a text and I'd like it to notify me and let me see who it was, then go back down into the tray where I can't see it until I wake the screen. I hope that makes sense the way I wrote it.

Always-on is a bit of a distraction.

I wish I could turn down the brightness more. The "off" screen still seems too bright.

Also, the burn-in on my watch is kind of annoying (Series 5, I noticed burn-in "shadows" after maybe 2 years). The on-screen items need to shift around a LOT more to prevent burn-in.

Basically, I'm still going to keep it OFF.

The one thing I would like to change about Apple's often-on display is for the option to make it a true always-on display.

It learns my pattern pretty well, so the often-on display is good, but sometimes I do I have tap it if I want to check the time or notification in the middle of the night, or if my pattern changes for a few days, like during travel.

I am smart enough to take into account the very slight additional drain to battery life. I am an adult. I want to have the option to choose for myself.
