It kind of looks like an app icon tile that sort of progresses from looking like a blueprint design, to being more defined, to being more finalized and polished. All done in a circular design to perhaps demonstrate lifecycle of app development, while still visually being in a form that ties back to the previous propeller type of logo.
CDM designed the new icon. You should have said that to begin with. :p

The newer Icon makes a lot more sense, it's a propellor with App Icons as fins.

This.

It's not really skeuomorphism. Its more Neumorphism, basically adding some depth to flat design.
As with most things, moderation is the way to go. Swing too far one way, then the other, and then the best solution is somewhere in the middle. But at the same time, design ebbs and flows, but I feel like they're getting settled into a good lane for a while.

It looks like the took the propellor and modeled the blades as iPhone outlines.. while still looking like blades.. I'm guessing the App Store is the same sort of thing, just looking at it in 2d. seems like a creative use of a shape..

The article says it's still a propeller. Look at it closely. It's 3 thin rounded rectangles tilted back. It's not a propeller anymore. It's not even a stylized propeller. It only sort of resembles a propller if you don't look at it closely.

That's a propeller... really?

Speaking with my technical illustrators hat on, I would have thought that if you were to create a depiction of a Thing, you would at least look at a real-world example of that Thing, and use that as a basis. I don't know what that new icon is, but it isn't a propeller. Have a look at a real one, then look again at the icon. The old version was at least credible.
Yes, I know, it's only an icon, but surely, why not take the same time and effort that you've put into doing it wrong, and do it right? Meh. The day of the yahoo is upon us.
It illustrates a propeller blade going from concept drawing to a final shape, which is rather neat for a testing app.

Really? The redesign of the icon is the big story?
For the next version, maybe they can tweak the background color.

I had to read the description to figure out which icon was new. The new icon looks older to me and less clear. Maybe it’s just me though. I personally think they should not change one icon at a time. That’s such a Microsoft thing to do. Windows 10 literally has icons from as far back as Windows 95. Change it all at once like iOS 7.

I like it, but it doesn't align with the design language of their other icons, does it?

Do you think we’ll see more iOS icons changing over the course of the next betas or even major iOS 14 versions? I’d love this new style all across the Apple ecosystem

Thank God that Jony Ive is gone and we don't have to live with T-square-and-compass "art" anymore. Intelligible icons are back!

no
"...TestFlight is Apple's app that developers are able to use to provide beta versions of apps to media, testers, and others to get their apps ready for release..."

The old icon looks like an abstract radiation hazard sign. The new icon almost looks like a propeller. A big improvement.
