The iPhone 12 requirement makes me angry because it's a clear ploy to get people to upgrade their phones. The 11 series is still a good enough phone for most people and my guess is not enough people are upgrading so they need a bit of an extra stick.

Anyway, not that big a deal; there's a good chance masks won't be required in most places much longer.
How do you know is not a tech limitation? How do you know it is a beta limitation? The amount of whining for a free new feature is incredible.

First, 4-digits code is weak. For sure weaker than this new FaceID via eye. Apple would NEVER release something like that if they know it could decrease a lot the security and including 3rd party apps.

Second, some apps just unlock using FaceID or its own alphanumeric password, for example banks and more. So, if it doesn't unlock using your face, you need to type a big password.

Third, sometimes you just catch your phone to read some notification and you need to pull down your mask just to read it? That's boring. Once? Ok, but try to do it several times in the day like I used to do!

1) 4-digit is weak if u have 0022 or 5454 AND if u digit it with people around u without caring too much if they are looking at your phone.
2) i wear mask only when necessary and, actually, i don’t live in a store.
3) I have touch id and dont have to invest in all apple ecosystem just to use this revolutionary feature called face id
4) dear sheeps, dislike this post!

Took a while. Looks like the mask mandate is coming to end here before 15.4 is out.

The problem I have with the masks is that I have to carry one around - and in theory, you should switch them out regularly - but people use them forever and just stash them in their pockets, likely next to the dirty handkerchief....

And they make my glasses fog up.

While I still much prefer Touch ID, I have to admit the latest updates to the Unlock with Apple Watch (which launched around Sept or so) have really addressed all of my issues with Face ID.

We’ve heard this story before, though. Many places have lifted masking requirements only to put them back in.

Whatever the case, I am very happy to have Unlock with Apple Watch, with or without a mask. There are often times when Face ID can’t get a clear confirmation (even sans mask) that I’ll hear it Unlock thanks to my Apple Watch. I hope the feature sticks around.

Not only that, they act as if they can actually use their phone with gloves on. Silly people. Face ID is not a definitively superior solution over Touch ID. They both have strengths and weaknesses.
Note: some gloves are out there that work on capacitance touch screens. I don’t know what the material is. I have a pair and they are VERY thin (also falling apart; I can now use my ring finger on my right hand as a stylus through the glove, making the special glove material unnecessary). They work worse after having been run through the wash.

Doesn’t work with my iPhone X because scanning half my face requires newer hardware than scanning my entire face?

Unless TouchID is an extra feature under the screen along with FaceID I'm glad to see it gone.
I get what they were going for, removing the home button to lose the bottom bezel. But I don't like it. The screen gestures are too complicated now. Months into owning a new iPhone, I still can't reliably open the app switcher. The extra screen real estate gets partially covered by my fingers anyway. And TouchID was better.

The home button was a conscious decision Apple made for years. I don't see any technical reason the og iPhone couldn't have a screen all the way down.

It should work with sunglasses. It works when I wear sunglasses. ?️
Normal FaceID can work with some sunglasses and some faces. If the sunglasses obscure your eye area, FaceID probably can pickup enough data from the nose and mouth area to get a match.

With the mask FaceID, that lower area isn't available so it needs to have all of the eye area available. You might need to lift your sunglasses to authenticate.

Just yesterday, I couldn't get my iPhone to unlock with an Apple Watch. So sure I'd appreciate additional ways to unlock, so I don't have to type my passcode before entering a public building.

„it makes Face ID a bit less secure“ As I read it , is is more like „it makes Face ID a bit less secure“.i
But even unlocking with Apple Watch kills Apples security. Why? I saw my watch umlocking my phone while the watch was lying on a table. Several times.

It could have been so easy. Technology for a phone with integrated TouchID is available. But Apple doesn‘t want to integrate it.
The same time Apple wants you to use your iPhone for payment and to store your id card.

I have a couple of pairs too but they’re clumsy at best. I usually take them off if I need to do more than just tap and scroll, which is often.

Apple users get a glimpse of how long it takes Apple to implement something as they took over two years, two iOS versions, and requires new one year old hardware or newer just to scan a face with a mask.
At least you get new features on a device you already bought for 1-2 years. Other companies will sell it as a new feature for the latest upcoming model. ?

But Apple delivers a solution with 50% to 70% of the face covered. I don't like itand I don't believe that this is the best solution. Apple just refuses to integrate TouchID the same way Apple refuses to move to USB-C.

Apple starts to feel a bit long in the tooth. 5 years to abandon and to replace butterfly - years and years to introduce a photo sensor with more megapixels (about to come this year). Really outdated cameras in the MacBooks. And all of this takes looooooooooooooong.
Apple has never been a fast mover expect in the OS world. Here Apple moves way to fast and keeps releasing new OS versions just days after the last update reached some stability.

While users waiting for features they would like to have, Apple implements things like Magsafe charging for the iPhone.

What is wrong with you, Apple?
