How do you know is not a tech limitation? How do you know it is a beta limitation? The amount of whining for a free new feature is incredible. The iPhone 12 requirement makes me angry because it's a clear ploy to get people to upgrade their phones. The 11 series is still a good enough phone for most people and my guess is not enough people are upgrading so they need a bit of an extra stick.
Anyway, not that big a deal; there's a good chance masks won't be required in most places much longer.
First, 4-digits code is weak. For sure weaker than this new FaceID via eye. Apple would NEVER release something like that if they know it could decrease a lot the security and including 3rd party apps.
Second, some apps just unlock using FaceID or its own alphanumeric password, for example banks and more. So, if it doesn't unlock using your face, you need to type a big password.
Third, sometimes you just catch your phone to read some notification and you need to pull down your mask just to read it? That's boring. Once? Ok, but try to do it several times in the day like I used to do!
As someone who lives in Finland, I would never trade Face ID for Touch ID… gone are the days of taking my gloves off just to unlock the phone.Just implement under display Touch ID..Face ID is a pain in the ass.
We’ve heard this story before, though. Many places have lifted masking requirements only to put them back in.Took a while. Looks like the mask mandate is coming to end here before 15.4 is out.
The problem I have with the masks is that I have to carry one around - and in theory, you should switch them out regularly - but people use them forever and just stash them in their pockets, likely next to the dirty handkerchief....
And they make my glasses fog up.
For sure, classic Apple we've come to expect. No wonder every quarter posts all-time high profits.Well ... that's just stupid.
Note: some gloves are out there that work on capacitance touch screens. I don’t know what the material is. I have a pair and they are VERY thin (also falling apart; I can now use my ring finger on my right hand as a stylus through the glove, making the special glove material unnecessary). They work worse after having been run through the wash. Not only that, they act as if they can actually use their phone with gloves on. Silly people. Face ID is not a definitively superior solution over Touch ID. They both have strengths and weaknesses.
Just think of how many lives you save every time you have to enter your PIN.I would not understand this does not become available on iPad as well. Not being able to use FaceID due to the mask is a big annoyance, and not acceptable when using a device that costs $1k+...
Just hold your breath and pull your mask down.If you have an iPhone 11 or older, the feature will not be available to you.
Funny how that works out
It's optional. I'm not buying a watch just to unlock my phone. What a shame to decrease the security of Face ID for such a lame reason. The Apple Watch solution was the secure solution. This is just a poor decision, that's 2 years too late anyway.
I get what they were going for, removing the home button to lose the bottom bezel. But I don't like it. The screen gestures are too complicated now. Months into owning a new iPhone, I still can't reliably open the app switcher. The extra screen real estate gets partially covered by my fingers anyway. And TouchID was better.Unless TouchID is an extra feature under the screen along with FaceID I'm glad to see it gone.
They run Android. I'm not poor.If you don’t want it, don’t buy it. There are plenty of alternatives.

from what I've heard, they increased the resolution of FaceID in the iPhone 12. That gives them enough detail for this feature. The previous phones didn't have that.Well ... that's just stupid.
Normal FaceID can work with some sunglasses and some faces. If the sunglasses obscure your eye area, FaceID probably can pickup enough data from the nose and mouth area to get a match. It should work with sunglasses. It works when I wear sunglasses. ?️
Easy, just skip to the comments section, and save yourself watching any of it. That's what I did.sheesh, 30 second video stretched to over 3minutes+
TLDR; it works fine.
Almost 2 yrs. But they had more Important things to work on like CSAM. LOLI wish this was available in 2020. Apple could have expedited this feature. However, I'm glad it's finally here.
Hopefully, it will be available in the iPad OS soon in the future.
I have a couple of pairs too but they’re clumsy at best. I usually take them off if I need to do more than just tap and scroll, which is often.Note: some gloves are out there that work on capacitance touch screens. I don’t know what the material is. I have a pair and they are VERY thin (also falling apart; I can now use my ring finger on my right hand as a stylus through the glove, making the special glove material unnecessary). They work worse after having been run through the wash.
At least you get new features on a device you already bought for 1-2 years. Other companies will sell it as a new feature for the latest upcoming model. ?Apple users get a glimpse of how long it takes Apple to implement something as they took over two years, two iOS versions, and requires new one year old hardware or newer just to scan a face with a mask.![]()
But Apple delivers a solution with 50% to 70% of the face covered. I don't like itand I don't believe that this is the best solution. Apple just refuses to integrate TouchID the same way Apple refuses to move to USB-C.At least you get new features on a device you already bought for 1-2 years. Other companies will sell it as a new feature for the latest upcoming model. ?
