Experience:
- they had no time, because they also did all warranty work for Samsung, etc.
- parts were $60-90
- invoice estimate $250+ About 50% of the new price.
Labor has gotten really expensive in the "developed" countries. And manufacturing is cheap (largely due to automation).
So the hour to 1.5 hours to replace a $60 parts is $200.
Go somewhere with cheap labor and you'll see all sorts of things repaired regularly instead of replaced.
I remember getting car parts repaired. Now a new one is cheaper than labor to repair. From radiators to alternator and starters.
But where labor is cheap those are all still repaired. Even small shops completely rewinding armatures and stators. Or rebuilding lead acid batteries. Open the case, replace the plates in the cells, and seal it up. They even make the plates in house.
I can send a watch to India for service and even with shipping there and back it's 1/3 the price of a local shop. Just takes months and there's risk of it being lost. Here it's $500+ to service a $150 watch, if you can find someone that will do it. (Hence DIY)
