Yeah I don't think it'll be more than a few months until a patch is released for this.

Apple wouldn't not patch this. The only reason the app was pulled is that it violated their carrier agreements, and the carriers gave them hell.

However, the carriers could trace the data... trace your activity with the company through their internet... and send you a nice letter telling you you're violating your contract and threaten to start charging you for the amount of tethering anyway.

This is what AT&T did with people who jai lbroke to circumvent tethering.

So, if I were to use this, all of my email, web surfing, etc. goes through tether's web site? Hmmm..

Mark

Sorry to break it to you, but in every product Apple has ever released, they have always held back on technology they could have implemented. The users have always found deficiencies, the iPhone is no different. The isight camera has been the same for how long?! You think they can't put something better than a VGA (hello, 90's?!) quality camera in those MBP's? If you think Apple is chasing the carriers.... come on mate.

Um, I was somewhat agreeing with you until you brought up the iSite camera that has been changed for quite some time now, and has been being updated with each new model that uses one. You know, the iSite HD camera...

And the iSite when it came out actually was better than anything else on the market. Yes, they didn't update it for awhile... but you sure missed that boat.

I want to tether my wifi only iPad and my AT&T iPhone without getting abused by AT&T more than I already do. Unfortunately, it looks like this service is not the answer for that, as great as it is for people that it fits.

Plus, even though $30 for a year is ridiculously reasonable, if there is widespread adoption of this the carriers will find a way to kill it.

I was one of the lucky guys who was able to get the App does this mean i have to switch to the 30 bucks a month situation or am i grandfathered thru ? has anyone seen any documentation on that?

You have to switch. You should delete the App asap just in case.

How long before the carriers sue these guys or before Apple blocks the functionality of this web app in Mobile Safari?

It won't work the way you think. Rewatch the video. You have to create an ad-hoc network ON YOUR PC or MAC (you can't do this on an ipad), connect the 2 and they your PC or MAC (not your iPad) can surf via your iphones connection. You can substitute the iphone for an LTE ipad as well. Short story, you can not tether a wifi iPad and an iPhone.

Maybe if you wanted to carry your laptop you could share your wireless connection on the laptop with the iPad and by starting your iPhone, iPad and laptop at the same time you might be able to surf on your iPad with your iPad routing through your laptop which is routing through your iPhone..... Wait.... that sounds horrible.

This is retarded. Jailbreak your phone and get MyWi. Then connect whatever you want without all this log in/password as hoc crap.

It's one of the strangest situations in the history of consumerism.

Carriers charge insane rates, such as bogus unlimited texting plans for $15 a month when SMS data usage is ridiculously minuscule and they try and double dip for tethering.

They sell you something and then try and force you to barely use it.

Well I'm glad I have free Personal HotSpot with my Carrier (Free.fr in France) for only 19.99€ ($26) /mo, which includes:

- Unlimited Calls Fixe & Mobile,
- Unlimited SMS/MMS,
- Unlimited Internet (Reduced Bandwidth after 3GB/mo thought)
- Unlimited Calls to 40 International destinations (US & Canada Fixes & Mobile)
- Free Wifi HotSpot
- Free Personal HotSpot (2G/3G)
- No Contract

The only last thing I'd wish is a Europe Roaming to also use it in UK, Germany, Spain and Italy... But it not only depends from one Carrier anymore.

But in comparison to my previous AT&T plan... man, for once I love to be in Europe :)

How long before the carriers sue these guys

On what grounds?

It's not illegal to do what they're doing.

Using it might be a breach of contract in some cases.

Some carriers permit tethering but can't support it using the official Apple method.

Or you could jailbreak your phone, pay a one time $20 fee, and use your phone as a hot spot.

Innovation but with risk to users

If you check the fine print the app has some terms and conditions that cover them and not us.

Where is the need? APPLE created the tethering software I use, it's built into iOS and I pay nothing extra for it.

I don't think many people in the States would be impressed if they couldn't travel outside of an area as small as France. Let us know when you can go from France to Amsterdam to Madrid to Vienna and Istanbul without roaming fees.

While true. Apple's blocking the use of installing non Apple Approved Apps is an issue. While for example the Google Play market will not show you any of tethering Apps if you are on one of the carriers (aka US) that want it blocked you can still install them either by going into Airplane mode and then wifi or just getting them from dev directly/another App store.

I also would not be surprised if Apple patches iOS to block these feature from working. I do not think it would be that hard for Apple do that.

I think it would be harder then it appears, there are most likely many apps that use the same kind of technologies.

Oh yeah? Sounds awesome! But how are you enjoying 5.1 on your phone?

I purchased the original app when it was launched on the App Store and I am pretty happy about.
What I would like to see is some sort of way to use the iPhone to create a wi-fi hotspot so I can access the data through my wi-fi only iPad.

Ha Ha Ha

3rd party innovators 1, Apple App Nazis 0 :D

Also good to see double dipping telecon giants being punished for their greed!!!

And now its not working at all.

I may be cashing in on the 30 day money back no questions asked...

(tether.com is only a one-to-one connection, not a one-to-many hotspot)

It shouldn't be too hard to configure other devices to connect to your laptop ad-hoc wireless and route them through the same connection. You could do it using a proxy on the laptop and configure all other devices to use the proxy.

I will try it out once I get my iPad 3 :)

Give the middle finger to the carriers!

Wrong. Blame the carriers, not Apple.

At this point, the carriers need Apple more than Apple needs the carriers.

Apple really should give them the finger and allow tethering no matter what. The carriers shouldn't even mind much, since nearly everyone is on a metered data plan.

People tethering == people using more data == going over the limit == MORE MONEY. Are they thick or something?

Hey guys!

Mark here from Tether. Allow me to try and clear up how we've set this up.

Our new version of Tether for iOS works on ANY apple device that's 3G/4G enabled. So yes it will work on your iPad but only if it's 3G/4G enabled.

In order for it to work you need to install our PC/MAC software and have it running on your computer. This sets up the ad-hoc network that you'll connect to with your device.

Your Mac software for this new Tether app OVERWRITES the old Tether app (I purchased it from the App Store before it was pulled).

1) Please make it two separate apps. I will not purchase the new one if it breaks my old purchased one.

2) Include some sort of UNINSTALL program! I had to search my drive to remove all traces of the new program so I could install the old one again.

Heh. Cute. But on the other hand, he can buy a SIM card from whatever country he wants, travel there, put in the SIM card, and get data and voice service without paying exorbitant rates for it.

How 'bout you? Like to go to Canada for a few days, use some data, see what you're charged? Could be in the two-thousand-dollar range. Perhaps you'd like to take the AT&T SIM out and put in another one? Oh, right, no carrier unlocks from AT&T and even the unofficial unlocks don't actually, y'know, work any more.
