Why can't I have my iphone connected (or better yet Blue tooth) to my macbook and send and receive texts on my macbook like through iTunes or some handy application dedicated to just that???

Anybody think this will come in 3.0 or the Gen3 Iphone?

    muppets, its a good idea.

type away on keyboard, and then the text is sent. all the while my phone is in my pocket or bag or docked.

i would use this immensely.i used to have it back in the windows mobile days *shudder* OP has a valid request.

    dont see it happening though.

This is not a stupid idea, and I fully agree with you craiger.

If im using my macbook and my iPhone is on the desk and synched, it would be nice to open up iTunes and be able to text.

Or with the release of 3.0, mms a picture saved on my macbook but not on my iPhone through iTunes.

Not everyone has email on their phones like we do and emails are not good for 100 or 200 replies. It's so much easier to text.

It just seems like it would be pretty handy and not hard to make happen.

Ok, Now it's sounding better. MMS a picture from your mac/pc would be a nice feature. Although im not sure why you can't email it... Just use the phone, is it that hard? It would maybe be more appealing if you could type a message on your mac and have it copied and pasted to your iphone. Just a thought but c'mon guys look at the phone!

I don't feel like I'm asking for much. lol

Anyone who's saying this is a stupid idea... pretty simple, DON'T USE IT.

For a lot of people, this would be a fantastic application. It can be done with other phones (using Bluephone Elite), so it is definitely possible. I would get a lot of use out of it.

If this thing is always sitting in front of you, made by the same company as your phone then why don't apple incorporate an app that allows you to phone, text, download apps on your laptop. Just use your phone!

I can see your idea working but I just don't think it will happen.

Because you, um, bought a phone?

I think the person saying "just email" meant on your computer; not your iPhone ;)

I know people who do this but it really does make me wonder why they even have a phone when they could just use a text gateway online :p

Obviously we all have different opinions on things, so heh :)

The thread name should be changed to "Text on MacBook through iPhone - WHY!?"

it would be VERY cool if this were integrated through Adium... if you received a text, it would pop up as a new chat in Adium, and you could respond there and have it be sent out as a text... and everything would be reflected in the SMS program on the iPhone.

I could be wrong but i am guessing that only "power texters" would understand how useful this would be.

And I know you were kidding but I wouldn't use my iphone as a keyboard because that would be less convenient. Using computer as a text app would be very useful and efficient.

Not really TBH. Mobile phones are meant to me MOBILE, computers aren't. Mobile phones win here i think. It's not that hard to have your mobile beside you when your at the pc is it? Remember what SMS means? Short Message Service. If you have anything to say which is really long then go to a pc and send an email. Maybe send one from your iPhone or even phone the person!

but if you're already working on your computer when a text comes in, or you want to send one, it would be much easier to be able to do it straight from the computer.

I don't really understand the hostility towards this (great) idea. No one would be forcing you to use it, it would just be an option for people like the OP and myself who think that it would be very convenient.

Well, I'm not a "power texter" (I send fewer texts in a month than probably many people around here do in a day), but I would use this all the time. Like today when I was working solidly on my computer all day and wanted to send a text to someone, it would have been nice to just type in it real quick on the computer, since it would have taken mere seconds. Rather than grabbing the phone, swiping to unlock, choosing SMS, waiting for it to load, selecting the person, typing the text...definitely faster.

Following this and plenty of other threads, there is one reason the OP gets bashed...when you come on and say "OMG why can't I do this?!?11?!1?" you will always get ripped apart, no matter how useful your idea.

It's all about convenience. The people who wouldn't use this like to blow it off and say "Just use your phone!!!1111!!!oneoneone."
How can someone not see how convenient it would be to not have to pick up your phone and interrupt your work flow just to answer a text? Having it on your computer would save time.
It's good idea for the people who would use it. And if you don't like it, no one would force you to use it.

If a good percentage of people would like this feature then Apple should consider it ... naysayers or not.

Even my Moto Razr had this feature. I wouldn't mind having it for the iPhone.

Actually all in all not a bad idea.

Incoming texts that pop up on your Mac screen while you are working or surfing would be the along the same lines as caller ID on TIVO systems. A nice convenience.

To naysayers, I remember back in the early 90's when I got my first cell phone. It was purely for voice. Might have gotten about 30 minutes of talk time and 12 hours standby. POS! If nobody asked 'why not pictures and email?', we wouldn't have the iPhone that we have today. So if you don't think it's a useful tool or don't wanna try, just keep living in the past.

Integration is going to be the only major gap left with our tech world. Apple is exactly the kind of company that likes to toy with such ideas.

Oh, I may have just realized why the naysayers don't like it. It may interrupt their all important PORN data stream.;)
