I agree...especially since you used to be able to send and receive them through Address Book over Bluetooth:

I could be wrong but i am guessing that only "power texters" would understand how useful this would be.

And I know you were kidding but I wouldn't use my iphone as a keyboard because that would be less convenient. Using computer as a text app would be very useful and efficient.

I am a power texter, and I love typing on my iPhone.

If you want to text someone using your computer, just go to the recipients carrier's website and send a text.

Overcomplicated solution to a "problem" that just barely exists.

I used to be able to send SMS's through Address Book back on Tiger. Then Apple removed that in Leopard, so I had to buy BluePhoneElite2 so I could send and receive SMS's to my Mac.

I used it all the time. If I want to send a text to someone, if I'm at my Mac, I can type it in seconds, where as a wordy text on the iPhone is time consuming. Yes, it doesn't take that long, but I still liked being able to send and receive via my Mac.

Okay, it is obvious this would be no use to you. But there is applications out there that do this for other phones, just the iPhone that isn't supported. Being able to text from your computer is a lot quicker.

Ya. I'll pull up my list of everyone's wireless account and find out who they are subscribers of.

You've made your point you don't like the idea and if you have nothing useful to add, probably a good idea to move on.

agreed

i miss the cell phone integration in Tiger's address book. being able to keep my phone in my pocket and have the caller ID pop-up on my computer screen when someone would call or text was great. i could then decide how to handle the call without ever touching my phone. it's the same as the way that caller ID with certain cable/phone companies will now show up on your television when a call comes in. it's integration at its best. i thought with Apple making their own phone that this would just be a natural fit and i don't really understand why they didn't include it. the only reason it didn't see more widespread use initially is because it mainly only worked on sony ericsson phones. it would seem like a fairly simple bluetooth profile to include with the iphone and add just a little more "wow factor." hopefully some keen developer will make it happen. bluetooth in 3. seems a lot less crippled so my fingers are crossed.

It's not a bad idea IMO. There are lots of benefits to using the iPhone as a voice modem for your computer.

For example, if discussing work, your computer could record and index the conversations. That means that if you're writing up a document and getting feedback from people, you can record their comments for listening to later when you're working on it.

Similarly, allowing your Mac access to your text messages could be very useful.

When you're sitting at your computer, it would be nice if your phone could delegate its alert functions to the computer. This allows you to focus on one device and allows easier multitasking.

Wow, I can remember a time around here when the people were a little nicer. It seems most of the time every idea that any poster has is greeted with "thats stupid!" " I would never use that!" "Thats idiotic" come on, I have seen more respect in a middle school. A year and a half ago people would have said that a glass touchpad on a laptop is a stupid or idiotic idea and when I think about it, I think they did say that. I think this would be kinda neat, and if you dont like it, dont use it simple as that. I had an app a while back that connected to my bluetooth phone and when I got a phone call or a text it will tell me who it was on my screen and pause my iTunes and when the phone would break the distance of bluetooth it turned on my screensaver assuming i had left the room. I enjoyed it.

What's up with all this? People are allowed to voice their opinions. You have your opinion of this and others have their own. What would be the point of discussion and forums if there was only one point of view?

Voice their opinion and make it valid. Saying something is stupid is an ignorant response. If they backed up why they thought it was stupid with some logical reasoning, then there wouldn't be a problem.

Too many ignorant people use these forums now..

Yes, If it's valid then that's fine but ignorance and stupidity shouldn't be used here.

How did this work? Did you need to have something running on the phone, so that it knew to forward messages and pass along SMSs and stuff?

Are your sure this was over bluetooth, and not just for modem-equipped Macs plugged into the phone?

Nothing was running on the phone. I had a Sony Ericcson K810i I used to connect via Bluetooth and send and receive SMS's.

Maybe you should check out BluePhoneElite2...

Ok, Now it's sounding better. MMS a picture from your mac/pc would be a nice feature. Although im not sure why you can't email it... Just use the phone, is it that hard? It would maybe be more appealing if you could type a message on your mac and have it copied and pasted to your iphone. Just a thought but c'mon guys look at the phone!

It's not the point that it is hard to take the phone out or not, it is more convenient. This is something I miss a lot from my Sony Ericsson K790. I was at work and everytime I received an SMS it just appeared on the SE application in my computer, and allowed me to reply instantly. It was a very handy feature, and made me waste less time while on work than taking out the phone, looking at the text, replying. Minor things like that can make a device much more enjoyable.

I'm not against it or anything. Maybe it's just because i've never needed use SMS etc on my PC.

Ok now that we have all hashed it out and decided it would be pretty useful and a wonderful way to sell a macbook with an iphone, which one of you is secretly Steve Jobs and is going to make this happen in June??

or as others have mentioned it's a pretty stupid Idea :apple:

I have a phone, laptop, and desktop, I really don't see the point of this

If i want a quick message I send a text/phone call

everything else a computer serves it's purpose

Because using a physical keyboard is much easier and a lot lot quicker than using the iPhone's? If I'm working at my Mac and I get an SMS, back with my old phone, I'd read it on my Mac and then reply as quick as I would in an IM conversation.

It is just easier to do. If it isn't something you want, big deal.

BluePhoneElite2 is selling well, so there must be a demand :)

Actually not a bad idea. I can imagine some technology to detect when you're at the computer, during which time texts will appear on the computer but as soon as you walk away (or look away) they'll arrive on the phone. This technology already exists in high-end Lexus to detect drivers dozing off or not looking right before a crash to slow down the car. And, of course, it can always been switched off for those who don't wish to use it.

But first let's see other useful features like OTA syncing of notes, etc.

Don't you mean like putting your iPhone into it's dock and taking it out when you leave the PC.
