I believe it applies to all services. I was browsing the plans and there were discounts attached to the data plans as well.

depending on your company/school deal with at&t it can apply to any number of things, but most only apply to voice

So just to summarize: what are we going to need to do to actually get this discount and where can we find our FAN number? Because I qualify!!!!!

hmmm all this time i thought i was getting a monthly employee discount it looks like i havent been at all...I'm going to have to give them a call after i get my new phone.

Okay I called AT&T again and got everything figured out. The 15% student discount only applies to the monthly voice plan, in my case I have a family plan and it doesn't even apply to the $9.99 for the second line, it does not apply to a data plan for any phone.

The iPhone has certain contractual restrictions that void any business/education discount on the voice or data plan. :( However there is a way to get around this if you have a family plan, if the primary account number is not an iPhone then you still get the discount off of the voice plan, but still nothing for the data plan.

Fortunately for me my wife is the primary and she won't be getting an iPhone. :D The woman I spoke with this time was very familiar with the iPhone plans and I really believe her, but as always this is a forum so take this for what it is worth. She also told me that since I already had an account with AT&T that I could just buy the iPhone and set it up at home. :)

does that mean everyones only applies to voice, or just certain ones?

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but my University has a certain discount program set up for students with AT&T which gets us 15% off the voice plan, I think this is a pretty standard deal, but some universities/businesses may have different deals worked out. I believe the iPhone discount nullification applies universally, although I did not ask this explicitly.

yeah i know my university has a similar thing but im just trying to figure out if maybe it will apply to all aspects of the phone plan including data. i have a school discount of 15 percent and work discount of 22 percent but if the school one applies to all aspects but the work only applies to the voice then i may choose to go with the 15 percent

However many iPhones Apple has projected to sell in the next year, cut it in half and that's about how many will actually sell thanks to AT&T. Whoever came up with these prices needs to go drink some bleach... nuff said.

If I understand your question right I think my previous post should anser the question:

In addition to this having the iPhone as the primary number on the account will void any discount, whether it is from your university or work.

I really don't think it is that bad, but it really depends on what features you use, for me all I care about is the data, I rarely use my phone to call anyone but my wife and I never send text messages (I have them blocked on my line), so I'm glad they didn't increase the data plan cost to include text messages that I wouldn't use. The $30 data plan is pretty standard among smartphones, but it does suck in comparison with the old iPhone plan, the only way it really sucks though is if you live in an area without 3G coverage. Either way I'm happy I have good 3G coverage in my city and if other people don't like what is being offered there will be fewer people in line on the 11th.

Also, don't forget about the poor Canadians (and Australians?) they are getting hosed by their wireless providers too. I bet the carriers know that data usage is going to skyrocket and they know they need to charge more to maintain/upgrade their infrastructure. People in places where 3G is already common will probably get the best deal (Hong Kong) because their providers already have their infrastructure set up. We are just paying the price of being early adopters of technology new to the US that has been available in other countries for awhile.

Damn...I got on the site and entered my email only to find out my school (Devry) only gets us 20% off on equipment, nothing on service charges. I bet that won't even apply to the 3G. Worth a try though. 20% off $499 is is pretty decent...basically getting the 16GB version for the 8GB price. Not bad.

edit: ah damn...no discount at all on the 3G?

Until I witness it not work or view an actual memo saying there is no service discount for education then I don't believe it. My schools discount on ATT's site clearly says 15% off service and lists exclusions (none of which are the iphone or its plans).

i work for disney, and were supposed to get an 18% discount on voice plans, ATT ust told me no discounts at all on iphone

All I think they mean by that is no discount on the actual hardware. A voice plan is a voice plan and is the same no matter the phone. I can see them blocking the data though, although the website currently has no mention of it.

i specifically asked about the voice plan, so either the rep is an idiot, which i hope, or no doscount on any part of the plan

I know it's not that bad but, I don't think there's going to be as many people with iPhones as Apple thought there was going to be...

Apple should just start their own wireless company hahaha

I went to att today to get "pre-approved" for a new contract. I asked about a corporate discount while I was there, and the rep said that he does not know yet about the discount but thinks there will be a discount. From the mixed signals in the posts it seems to me that att reps have no idea about what is going on with the discount.

However, if the IPhone is to have no "special treatment" like all other smart phones then the discount should apply. That is if att holds true to their word about no "special treatment."
