I might sub some dried cranberries instead as my wife isn't keen on the idea either.

Maybe a 50/50 mix would be OK? Cooked raisins can pack a lot of sweetness. Like hearing about all the blokes who are doing parts, if not all, of the cooking.

Turkey, ham, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn casserole, etc. in the afternoon.

At night...

Nothing quite compares to the thing my mother did one year - fortunately it was at her sister's house, so we had normal looking fare as well, for the confused. She boned an entire 25lb bird, stuffed and cooked it. The exterior kind of resembled a haggis. Each flat slice was meat with a circle of stuffing in the middle. Not bad, but somehow just not satisfying: that large carcass on the table has such a primal appeal to it.

The vision of that cracks me up. Sounds like it was a lot of work!

Alas, my Thanksgiving dinner got canceled when the contractors at my brother's house couldn't get the kitchen remodeling finished in time.

Fortunately, the contractor apologized, will get it finished in the next week or so, and we'll now have a BIG Christmas party at his house instead.

Living abroad

it's Turkey Day and the Hard Rock Cafe!

Actually there are other places serving thanksgiving dinner, but not actually living in the city it's a bit hard to actually get out there, let alone find someone who wants to go out late on a Thursday night. So I have to settle for whatever I can find on Saturday afternoon, and it looks like Hard Rock is it.

Thanksgiving at my house as usual. Menu is a mix of traditional and some dishes with an Italian spin:
Antipasto
Spinach triangles
Stuffed Mushrooms

Turkey
Homemade biscuits
Cornbread stuffing
Mashed potatoes with prosciutto
Sweet potato casserole
Roast asparagus
Homemade cranberry relish

Stuffed Pumpkin Roll
Applie Pie
Ice cream
Sweet Ravioli (pic below)

Turkey is boring but the drunk family really is a riot! Let's just hope we stay away from politics this year...

Happy thanksgiving everybody! :)

Thank you, Blue Velvet. I just hope I get to sit at the grown-up table this time. The mashed potatoes fight got quite ugly last year.:D

Seriously? I spent the first 25 years of my life trying to escape the kids table and now I'd give my left nut to sit there again. :D

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

Let's talk turkey. It's Thanksgiving in a few days time and I've never been anywhere that's celebrated it or even with friends.

Your favourite recipes and drinks, what you're looking forward to, what you're thankful for this past year, the distances you've travelled, family festivities and feuds, even the Black Friday sales... let's hear it all, no matter how small or grand.

Tell us about your day. :)

Hey Blue, coming in late on the festivities here in this thread. Since I work retail, I will not be spending Black Friday shopping - nor would I want to. LOL

I have lots to be thankful for this year, and even in the worst of years always try to find something to be thankful for. I have good friends, a job that I still love after 12+ years, a roof over my head. And maybe most of all this year, I have been given the chance to meet the most amazing man in my life just three months ago. Five years ago I gave up on that hope, but been given a second chance for happiness.

We both work retail, so it was by sheer luck that we were able to score Tuesday thru today (Thanksgiving Day) off. Many grand plans - some seen, some still to do. LOL

Day One of our time off was to join Costco together (done - and an inside joke for us because of mutual friends). As luck would have it - I started to get what I thought was a full-blown cold during the morning out... Got what we needed to fix the appetizers for Thanksgiving Day with his brothers family and their Dad and Mom (BTW - first time I was to meet his brother and their parents today <eek>). Came back home feeling like you know what... But he allowed me to nap with my head in his lap as I dozed in and out and we watch Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Day Two - Plans were to have pictures done with Santa, catch the Harry Potter movie, and dinner later that night at a bar with Drag Queen Bingo. Well two out three was bad. Missed the movie for still feeling a little tired - but better than the day before. The best spot about the pic with Santa was when a couple with their children that was behind us - asked us how many years we had the Santa pics together - this was of course our first time together! Skipped the movie in order to be rested for that night - or worse skip the bingo and rest for today.

Day Three - What a day to be thankful for! I was feeling 100%. The crock-pot appetizer we prepped this morning went very well. And my "fear" of meeting the rest of the family was for naught. In fact at one point, Kari, Eric's sister in law asked Josie their daughter to show me her "big girls room" - since Josie was a little wound-up by then. We played with her Dora the Explore Globe for a while - when a question about the Sydney Opera House came up in the game. The pictures were rather small on the globe, and asked her if she would like to see larger ones. Had Eric grab my iPad from the car and shared some pics from Google with her of the Sydney Opera House. Even had fun in trying to play with her about today was today here; but tomorrow was tomorrow there. LOL

At 4yo, this is one sharp girl! Showed her a night time picture first. Then she asked to see a day time picture. She noticed the water, and asked her what the buildings looked like. She was a little lost, so I asked her if they looked like sails on a sailboat... she nodded. then she asked me what it looked like in side! Like I said she is a sharp girl!

I was on 3G with the iPad, and things were slow. I remembered I had the Alice In Wonderland app on the iPad. And asked if she would like me to read her a story. so we got through about half the abridged version till Josie started to fade a bit (even with my silly voices LOL). Barely remember/paid attention to Eric and his sister in-law talking and taking pictures of Josie and me.

Dinner and the rest of the evening was great. Despite my "fear" this turned out to be one of the few Thanksgivings that I didn't come home thinking - "thank goodness that is over with"! And I know will become many more, I am sure...

Thanks for letting me share in my joy; as a reward is the appietizer that Eric and me cooked for everyone.... will save you all from the pics of all the goings on... LOL

Meatballs and Sliced Kielbasa in BBQ Sauce (Slow Cooker/Crock-pot

One bottle Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce 40oz (from Costco)

Two cans jellied Cranberry 140z

Honey (about 4-6 tablespoons)

Soy Sauce (about 1/8 cup)

2-3 pounds of cooked plain meatballs (thawed)

2 pounds of cooked smoked Kielbasa (sliced to bite sized chunks)

I used a 6qt slow cooker.

Slice the jellied cranberries and place in to the bottom of a crock-pot (I spray with PAM first to ease sticking and clean-up). Then squeeze out the BBQ sauce on top of the cranberry jelly slices. Don't worry about what may be left in the bottle (put the bottle on its cap for later). Then half of the honey on top of that. Then place the meatballs and kielbasa on top of that mixture. I press it down to be sure that they are somewhat covered (though they are not fully covered - doesn't matter). Then take the remainder of the BBQ and honey on top of the meat. Let it cook on high for 2 to 3 hours or 4 to 5 hours on low.

Mix about half way through if possible. I just feel that this allows the sauce to cook in to the meats....

As a public service, not that we want this thread to break into a political fight, I bring to you a valuable primer in order to become forearmed with ammunition, no matter what side you take:

Slate's guide to your annual Thanksgiving arguments.

With yes and no, pros and cons, arguments for each. Er, enjoy.

One of the high points is that Eric's family were all liberals! :)

Lots of today was a blur... but his brother did teach his daughter something about Cheney... will have to ask what that was ROFL

Rest assured that no matter my feelings I was in in good company - so a very good Thanksgiving Day! Though I wish I had this list last night out with some friends <eek> LOL

Also, what is Black Friday? I've never really come across it apart form Amazon.co.uk seem to have it plastered over their home screen. And i've heard it on here of course :)

Black Friday is when folks get silly over staying 3 or more hours in line to before a store opens at 5am to get deals they may or may not get after the day after Thanksgiving... Think US greed.... :(
