"MacBook Pro will follow the MacBook Airs move to Solid State Storage and removal of an optical drive." ???

Then the 13'' MBP will be discontinued!

i don't think so. people will still get to choose to get 13 ' MBP for the better processor and ram with less or same price.

the future of electronic use

Talking of the MBP having or not having an optical drive is just plain silly!

The future is having an iPad for travel and for home entertainment (mix in with an Apple TV of sort). For work, you use a desktop computer such as an iMac. The desktop is making a comeback IMHO. Of course I could be wrong. It really depends on how easy it is to type this message on an iPad.

If that is the future, I'm getting out of computing all together. That is way too limiting and requires multiple devices. For me, a laptop serves both those purposes, for work and for travel/entertainment. It's 1 device I need to manage, 1 set of data. Not to mention Apple is making things like the iPad way too limited in what capabilities they offer.

Device consolidation is the future. iPad is not a consolidated device.

>remove cd drive
>make it ssd by default

>same as mba.

>discontinue the mbp

make sense? no, it doesn't. because thats retarded why the eff would apple make two versions the mba? one thin and one not?

this is the macbook PRO. for PRO's....

Quote of the month!

Well said sir :)

I doubt the MBPs will be going to solid state only. The cost of a 512gb drive is over a 1000 dollars.

MBPs are primary machines for lots of people, including professionals and non professionals. In fact, the major thing holding me back from a MBP is the measly 500 gb HD. I need at least 1 TB to hold most of my stuff and future proof for a few years.

Apple is not going to screw people over; even a "bargain" of a 512gb drive for an additional 500 dollars would be unthinkable.

I'm currently feeling the limits of my 1 TB of storage at home. My primary and only machine is a MBA with a 128 GB SSD. Pros and non-pros alike have learned to moved on from laptop based storage to more secure solutions like home NAS/home Servers. The less my mechanical storage moves around, the better for its health.

When you buy things in bulk it costs less and Apple could probably easily put a 512GB SSD in a MBP and still gain money on every purchase using the the same prices they are now.

Oh and if you need a terabyte of storage then why don't you buy a 5200RPM 1TB HDD? Nothing is stopping you from doing that.

Actually, what I really think about the future of computing is that more and more of us will be keeping what we have now a bit longer and for a few of us until our machine falls apart beyond repair. As high underemployment becomes chronic and future graduates are stuck waiting tables, I don't see us buying new electronics like we did in 2007. Events beyond Apple's control, and most here are in complete denial or oblivious to will dictate our computing habits by extension our purchasing habits.

2 prong question here:

1) does this mean there is no early 2011 jan/feb mbp refresh w/ sandy bridge?
2) how much do you think the new fcp studio will cost? i am asking because the current fcp studio 3 can be had for $800.

Exactly true. Ipad is a complimentary device that needs a lot more added to it. Honestly the Macbooks as they are could use better cooling solutions come to think of that as well. Encoding something in H.264 really ramps the temps up. Of course they will probably thin it out more, I think their idea of a perfect laptop is having zero visible ports on either side. The power port would be hidden and maybe have 1 USB port and display port hidden somehow as well.

Form well over functionality. Its a *********ng electronic, I don't mind them looking nice but good christ some of the nonsense gets annoying.

O and Blu ray is doing quite well on sales, I always said everything will and should be a mixed bag for the next 20-30 years. DD if you want that, disk, or another format perhaps like a SD card or thumb drives. ALL should be available its about choice.

This is true as well... :)

My current MBP, although almost 4 years old, is still performing brilliantly and I will for sure squeeze last drop of life out of it before buying a new machine...

We as society have to correct our lifestyles and give up on pointless consumerism by only buying things that we truly need - in cash! (not on on credit)

So if apple removes optical drives, they expect ever gamer on the Mac to have the patience to download starcraft 2 online, instead of just going to the store and buying one and plugging it in right into comp?

I really hope they do remove the optical drive I NEVER use it too me its just wasted space. I would rather them extend battery life or something with that space.

Hmm.. I got two HDDs AND an optical drive in my Dell M6400.

...Then again its a monstrosity that's power adapter alone weighs more than the MBA. :)

I only have 1 HD and an optical drive that I can replace with an extra battery on my dell. I put in the extra battery. Don't remember the last time I had to put in the optical drive (over a year). The Dell is still better used as a doorstop, heater or boat anchor.

I tried that once. When my Powerbook got to be about 7 and was still working just fine, I upgraded anyway.

You actually go to a physical store? Amazing!
