So you'd have a black bar instead of the notch across the top, right? How does that increase the usable screen space?

Yes, I would. Because I've used one of those phones to watch movies before and even was able to put said movie in full screen. Due to the black bezel and the way OLED handles black it didn't look like anything was cut off.

Not to mention it's better that way for landscape browsing and reading.

ok, so, while the notch actually leaves more content visible than a black bar would, and while you would have to cut off parts of the video in either case in full screen (regardless of whether it looks like you didn't), I guess I can see how a notch might have the potential to visually distract more when viewing content in full screen. I really couldn't say for sure though before having tried it myself. In any case, this is something that Apple could easily solve in software if they ever felt like they had to.

Actually according to the title of the thread you did. Otherwise how could you make that claim?
Nope, my title does not specifically say I already did. My statement is simply based on what I saw, first hand or second hand, etc.

If I said Jennifer Lawrence looks gorgeous on that red dress today, that does not mean I met her in person. I can simply say that because I saw her on T.V.

Now, if I may, here is the title you can actually bank on to prove your point: "I've been using the iPhone X and that black notch ruins the movie experience for me." Now that's not my thread title, is it?
[doublepost=1505708922][/doublepost]After watching a few video demos of the iPhone X, I've come to realize that the screen can be shrunk to not occupy the notch. Since the X's screen is bigger than what's on the current 'Plus' phones, I think this is not too bad at all.

Nice try but no. And entirely too long winded.

This is true. But on the flip side, you can't say that the material of the red dress felt rough and left a rash on the skin without wearing it.

Just like you can't say an experience is ruined without having experienced it.

What you are actually complaining about is the phone size. The notch has nothing to do with movies, phone size does, obviously.

There are plenty of useless threads, but these are particularly useless. Having said that, why not? we have plenty of time to discuss nothing. Nothing is better than silence.

If the notch was replaced by a full black bar, then you still wouldn't be able to watch movies in full screen without it being cropped. So you'd still have a black bars all around for original aspect ratio viewing.

Videos are 16:9 and so are the iPhone Plus models.

Not ALL films but most. Some use super panovision, or IMAX or some other obscure aspect ratio. Disney often uses 1.33:1 or 1.66:1. There will always be some compromise. That's why they sell some 21:9 televisions.

Just pulled some Blu-rays off the shelf to check & the 4 I checked had 4 different aspect ratios!
1.78:1 (full frame)
1.85:1
2.35:1
2.40:1

Not sure if any of those can be viewed in full screen on the phone, without losing detail from at least 2 edges?

I am concerned that because of notch we wont be able to use full screen. I like videos in crop mode doesn't cut much but on X videos will show up to the notch right?

Well if you don't mind cropped videos, then the notch shouldn't be that much of a distraction?

I don't like the zoomed in/cropped view myself, but I don't watch many movies on my phone, so I can see myself watching Youtube at full screen without the notch bothering me. Should be a pretty good experience imo.

This is the most common myth about the notch. It's not going to get in the way of video at all, unless you're watching video wrong.

Please explain how notch will come into play, I really wanna know, it would make me made the buying decision.

If you're watching a movie on your phone, the experience is already ruined. A little notch isn't going to change much.

I didn't realize how many people actually watch movies on their iPhone. The smallest display I would watch a movie On would be my iPad.

Even then I wouldn't watch a movie I was really looking forward to or wanted a great experience. I missed Dunkirk at the cinema and was given a copied DVD. That DVD went straight in the bin and I will wait for a blu ray release.

It's something you do when you're on the bus or something not in most situations

I would watch a football match at work or NBA but that's it and for that would be fine

For someone who is on the go and watches twitch and YouTube the notch takes away from the screen real estate, which means you will have to settle for a smaller frame in order to view content in full.

from the pictures and videos we have seen the notch stands in the way when viewing pics or videos unless you double tap to make the picture/video smaller. That to me is a major step back if you are using a 7+.

Then you are very uninformed, most folks such as myself watch many videos on twitter/YouTube/Twitch and there is a huge amount of folks out there that use their smart phones to access such platforms to watch videos. I am on the go, can't bother taking an iPad to work, so during my breaks and lunches I like to pop my AirPods and watch videos and shows...

There are many folks out there that watch stuff on their smartphones more than their tvs.

Go research google analytics and it should give you a good idea how much mobile browsing/ watching videos has increased on smartphones, pretty big chunk.

Well, obviously the notch is going to be there, there's no getting rid of it. But its intrusion into your user experience is wildly overstated by those who just don't like the design.

Vertically, the notch is what it is. It's a question of style preferences as to whether you like it or not, but it's not going to have an impact on the screen. In landscape mode, it becomes more of an issue. Video is cropped to 4.7" size, so the notch disappears into the black bars on either side (those black bars still being thinner than the bezels on any other iPhone).

However, if playing games that utilise the entire screen, it will intrude over the display. If surfing the net in landscape mode, side bars will appear (although I'm not sure whether that's to accommodate the notch or just an aspect ratio thing). That's really not great. How big a deal it is to you will depend on how regularly you do those things.

In a nutshell, the notch really isn't such a big deal. The reaction is a little hysterical.

That's not really what I said. I said I didn't realize how many people actually watched movies on their iPhone. And when I mean by that, is somebody that sits down in one sitting and watches an entire two hour film on your iPhone. I'm not saying someone can't do that or shouldn't, I just don't have the mindset to watch a two hour movie on a 4.7 or 5.5 inch display. I find that to be uncomfortable. I would rather watch a full movie on my 4K TV. That said, I completely understand for those who watch podcast or various videos, sports programs that might be in length of 15 to 30 minutes or so. But anything close to two hours, I would find rather unpleasant for a viewing experience, but to each their own on that situation. But that's more specific of what I meant.
