Snow Leopard in July.

New Mac Pro at WWDC, HOPEFULLY, in June.

I do NOT want to wait for Snow Leopard, and Apple wouldn't do that, anyway.
Why not? Why spend all the testing time and resources to validate Leopard on the new Mac Pro to use for a month when you can uses the time and resources validate Snow Leopard on the new Mac Pro?

If the Mac Pro made the same money for Apple that the iMac does, I could see it. But, the Mac Pro is not that kind of money maker. Testing resources are in limited supply and I could envision a scenario where Apple would not spend them on updating Leopard for a system that could wait for Snow Leopard.

Maybe I was dreaming when I read in several posts " End of February"

Whenever it is announced, you still probably have 4-8 weeks until they are shipping to the public in quantities.

Plus, don't forget for mission critical work to leave +6 months for hardware issues to be worked out with the redesigned platform. You simply are not going to sit down to a newly released mac pro and crank out your important client work, what happens when your video card crashes, or your RAID card has a conflict, and Apple or your other vendors have not worked out a driver issue, you are dead in the water.

Regardless of actual release, personally I wouldn't be thinking about rolling the "new" mac pro into your studio or production house before October.

Last January they were available the week of announcement at apple stores and authorized resellers (Micro Center, Mac Mobile, etc).

While I agree that buying a product day one is asking for trouble (See 790i), waiting for the thing to be 4 months from being an old model is probably a bit too long. All of the "problems" with the 2008 were solved within 3 or 4 months, and even then the issues were hardly deal breakers.

Personally I'm buying in May, because that's Apple's biannual employee purchase month for reseller stores, and I'm the type of person who wouldn't mind getting a $600 discount. If there are any issues, hopefully they'll be fixed by then, but unless they're serious I'll be $4,000 poorer by the end of May.

Hey!

Just a question. Im not really a mac user, but I have been waiting with same impatiente as yourselves. Im building a custom 2 x gainestown.
I read a few pages back people plannign to spend enormous amounts of money for the new computers. im not sure if this was a joke or some bragging or whatever.
A lot has happened in the time since the last mac pro which has put mac way back. Cuda being the most important in my oppinion. Right now if you are planning to spend more than 10k $ and you are doing video, you should be looking into tesla computers that will still be at least 50 times faster than the fastest mac pro when it comes out.
If you are doing 3d rendering, you dont need to fill your mac pro with the ultimate amount of ram, you would be way better of buying more of them with less ram and way better to just build custom pcs with the same configuration and run linux on it. Maybe even build youself a big render cluster with 20 gainestowns and you will still be under that 20.000$ you were mentioning.
Though, I dont really know why you need such computers. The question I wanted to ask is what exactly do you plan to do on such a computer.

thx.

I'm going to assume you're talking about my posts. In which case I'll respond with this.

1.I will never, ever.. in my life.. buy a "cluster" of mixed, unmatched components for the sake of speed.. " on paper". Especially for a machine I'll have to downgrade to XP.. thats the biggest laugh ever...

2. I spend my money with apple because I've been using their OS for almost 10 years now, after finding nothing but disappointment, system failure, out-dated support for an out dated OS.

3. What I do with my money is my own choice. I own a business. I have a budget for these systems that reaches beyond $40,000 ( per year) .. No bragging there.

4.Why would I " need " a computer/farm? Well.. I'm doing some pretty advanced animation in HD, with 12,000+ bps output for the sound files alone. The rendering and editing is well within Apples range of computation at their high end.

5. Brand loyalty. I mean.. why would I buy a specialized computer from a tiny company with very little support? Furthermore.. Why would I need a company to throw together parts in a box for me? If I wanted , I could do that on my own. Cut the middle man.. What you're paying for is a tower, and limited support. With apple, if something goes wrong, I have a store a block away from my studio, and a business account to overnight a new computer.

6. I DO need to fill my computer with ram.. not only does this help ALL of my applications breathe, it cuts down the time of rendering by DAYS. Even in conjunction with a small farm.

7. If you're not a mac user, why are you here? Go throw your "i7" chips in a dell please.. then youTube it with the latest in LED glowing tower displays.

*Standing Ovation* :cool::D:apple:

Chill dude. Im not looking to pick a fight and Im not looking to get into a pc vs mac discussion. I use many different platforms and I find benifits and drawbacks in all.

1 .mixed, unmatched components? donwgrade to Xp ? What are you talking about?
2. I dont care about apple and os-es. Thats not what I was talking about.
3. You can do with your money what you wish. I just find the choice pecuilar, hence my question. The question that was set complely in good faith.
4.I was wondering why not use tesla computer thats at least five times faster in its lowest configuration for maybe only a fraction of the price.
5. You can do that. I do it. And there are many warranty and service plans out there that give you the same treatement.
6. Ram doesnt cut down rendering time at all. And you dont run aplications on the rendering machine. Thats a waste of resources. Thats a weird setup you say you have there.
7. Im here cause i like the discussion about the gainestown which Im waiting for very much. I dont use dell. I prefer to build my own computers so I can put in exactly what I want. And I can set it up how I want it. And their look is usualy very dull and unimaginative cause I use them and I dont show them around.
I like mac but I just dont really need it. I build my computers and they come out way cheaper with the setup I want. Still I dont think mac pro is a bad choice or anything. I think is a great computer. Im looking forward seeing what they put in this next one, since they will have to do an amazing job to get back on track with all the inovations that came out this year.

4. Is there somewhere with the results of tests that I can see these benefits? I'm not questioning them, I'm just curious.

7. And you can do that with a Mac Pro... and what about the cheese grater is glitzy? It's a fifty pound computer; it's not made to be shown off, it's made to work.

"Dull and unimaginative" is right...

Well I cant really show you benchmarks, mostly because there are so many different setups, but if you know video, you know cuda and you probably already have imagined how to put it to its fullest potential. Seems tesla is the first step.

Will they offer 1000$ tesla grahpics cards with the new mac pro? Probably not. Though if they would, the whole processing power of gainestowns would be a waste against the tesla. on the other hand for 3d rendering it would be a waste to put teslas in at all.
This is why Im especially wondering about the new mac pro, how they will do it, especialy since all of your are mentioning snow leopard but not really thinking of the graphics cards. And the sellecion of graphic cards has been always quite narrow with macs. What do you think ?
