I'm just hoping there's a GTX 280 or better.. The one place Apple has always lagged behind is in the graphics card department.

4870 not enough for you? Even considering the fact that ATI's OS X drivers are frequently better than Nvidia's? (see 8800GT vs 3870 in Mac Pro).

The 4870 isn't as impressive as the X2. The GTX260 is faster than the 4870. The GTX280 is faster than that. Only the 4870X2 is faster.

Considering Apple writes the drivers for the nvidia cards that doesn't speak volumes about Apples driver writing ability.

I guess I've just been more of an Nvidia fan the last few years. Even though some ATI specs look better on paper, the performance always seems to be better with the Nvidia cards.

The hard part is going to be when the new mac pro is released to decide if I want to wait a couple days / weeks and see some benchmarks and user feedback before buying, or just jump the gun and buy one on the first day which is more like me.... Guess we'll see...

I'm not opposed to using ATI if it truly performs better, but it'll have to prove it to me... For now I'm planning on staying with Nvidia...

There are real possibilities that they release a smaller Mac Pro? I need substitute for my Cube this year and if they don't offer something between the Mini and the Mac Pro I will have to buy a PC tower. :confused:

Okay. This needs to happen to the next Mac Pro. Custom Tylersburg to have FIVE Gainestowns!

That would be... 20 cores. 40 logical ones. :D

2 RAM slots, no room for an extra HD, and a giant sheet of glass covering the display. Ick.

4GB chips are cheap, and iSCSI/AoE takes care of the storage problem quite nicely.
Everyone agrees that the iMac isn't the ideal machine when it comes to expandability, but it's by no means a bad one.

They offer the iMac.

and it's a nice option for many people but not for me. I just want to run MacOS in a regular tower in wich I could attach my monitor, with a couple of hard drives, easy access, possibility of upgrades. And not as luxurious as the Mac Pro. it is so rare what I need?

With 5 Gainestowns it would cost easily 10000 bucks... FOR the processors alone! There'd be the cost of the custom board, designing it, etc. !

EDIT: And it's actually 5 computers in one, not a single one working from the 5 procs. too bad.

I'm not sure where to look in 10.6 for hints about new graphics cards or other stuff about the Mac Pro. All I can find is snappiness, total 64-bitness, and a lack of FSAA in WoW. Also... the PC guy Hodgeman is on Battlestar Galactica as a brain specialist... wtf...

I'd like to know where you're getting them from. None of the iMacs accept 4GB chips (2x2GB max) and the 4GB chips that do exist are over $300 a pop.

$300 isn't much, but fair enough on the not-supporting-4gb-chips point. I thought they did.
Allow me to backtrack and say "2GB chips are cheap" (<$30).

The current MacPro is not available in Germany anymore (except from the Apple Online Store):

-> IngramMicro, one of the biggest wholesalers in europe for electronics, does not have any MacPro in stock for almost 3 weeks now.

-> Cyberport.de: Not available. No delivery date specified.

-> CanCom.de: Not available either.

-> Hints in MacOS X 10.5.7

Yeah it's becoming increasingly clear to me that the mac pro update is not waiting for WWDC. The indication about the nehalem xeon launch was that the first systems would be available the day after launch meaning the chips are probably arriving with manufacturers about now I would guess. Quite conceivable that apple will announce the mac pros shortly before.
