I saw that. Did the Rags give him a one year or a multi year contract?

Nasland has one year left at $3 million on his deal with the Rangers. He is retiring which means he is giving up that money, which means the Rangers have some more cap space. A classy decision by a classy player. He could have come back and played for the cash, but decided that he can't play at the level he wants to play at, and that it is his time to hang up the skates.

This is why Ovechkin = God. He is more of a complete player than Crosby.

Ovechkin is the best in the league. Hands down. A hitter. A passer. A skater. A shooter. The total package.

I haven't been this excited about a player since #99.

Definitely, a classy player -- I was upset the way the Vancouver fans kind of ran him out of town, after everything he did for the city. At least the radio today was filled with stories of just how good he was off the ice, let alone on.

Its a shame I don't get to see more of him, but he's always playing while I'm heading home from work!

Much improved game by the Canucks tonight, but everyone in Vancouver held their breath when we went up 2 - 0.

The Hawks are showing a bit of a disturbing trend (for Chicago) - even dating back to the Calgary series it seems they have to fall behind before they kick their game up to the top level -- sign of a young team.

Ahhh thank you. Very classy indeed.

No arguments from me.

Good Ole #99. I don't see Ovie breaking his records, but Ovie will be regarded as one of the best to ever play the game and that's a fact.

In other news...

Apparently the Coyotes have filed for bankruptcy.

Yeah, Gretzky's records are off the charts. If you didn't see him play in his prime, it's hard to really understand just how good he was.

Speaking of Gretzky, right?

Yeah, and Mr. Jim "RIM/Blackberry" Balsillie has made an offer to purchase the team with the condition that it relocates to Southern Ontario. I really really hope it will happen, but the NHL won't let it happen.

Balsillie has been trying to buy an NHL team for a few years now. And he really wants one in the Southern Ontario region, either in the Kitchener-Waterloo area (where RIM is located), Hamilton, or as a second team in Toronto. It's unbelievable that Bettman won't let this billionaire buy into the league. I just don't get it.

I hear that. I still get angry at the fact that he skated for the Rags. Utterly disgraceful.

I've been reading the comments on ESPN.com (also read the article) and it's amazing. Putting the team in Glendale was a big mistake. Send them back to Winnipeg or better yet to Hartford (long live the Whale!).

They gotta let this guy in, he'll get a team eventually but it might be under Bettman's terms.

Bettman is an ass.

I'm guessing that you read Charles Wang's comments, eh?

I just watched the third period of the Wings/Ducks game. Ducks won. The Wings scored a tying goal with a minute or so left, but it was waived off because the ref lost sight of the puck. The whistle blew after the puck went in the net, but that doesn't matter- the play is dead once the ref loses sight of the puck. I hate when games are decided by the refs being in bad positions.
But, the Wings had 59 other minutes to score, so it's not all about that one play I guess.

I think the Ducks may actually pull the upset here.

Amongst other things :p

Of course I did. I'm honestly not surprised by it at all. Kate Murray (Town of Hempstead Supervisor) needs to get off her f*cking high horse.

There is a fan base on Long Island. The Isles are hovering near 90% season ticket renewal rates. They are looking for at least 10k season ticket holders, which means they have to fill about 6300 seats during game nights. Renewals actually increased when the Isles got the 1st pick.

Other than the Lighthouse project, Wang himself is guilty for not properly surrounding himself with knowledgeable hockey personnel. Mike Milbury and Garth Snow do not count. Wang wants the team to succeed and wants to do what's right for the fans, but at the same time he's also a business man. He's lost a lot of money and he has the right to pissed off.

As for Islanders fans, we just need something to cheer for. The '01-'02 season was absolutely amazing. BTW still hate Darcy Tucker for that hit on Peca.

Friggin' Ducks, gonna kill my predictions here!

^^^^ Tucker is the kind of player that you hate unless he is on your team. Before he was a Leaf, I hated him. While he was a Leaf, I liked how hard he played- he destroyed himself for the team. But yeah, he really nailed Peca bad that game- it was a cheap shot. I remember I was in Vegas at the ESPN Zone watching the game with some Islanders fans when that happened. Yikes!

More on the Phoenix situation. Looks pretty bad, even for NHL standards.

Here's a detailed column by Bob MacKenzie about the Coyotes situation.

Funny thing- before I clicked on it to read it, I was like, "what the hell does this hockey writer know about legal and accounting issues?", and then he went and said just that in the first paragraph. He did a good job though.

People say that about Avery. I still wouldn't want that douche anywhere near my team.

How'd you lived to tell about it! :p

Even though we lost, it was an absolutely fantastic series. One of the best first round series ever played IMHO.

Good article. This is gonna be a massive train wreck, it ain't gonna be pretty when it's all said and done.

Boston and Carolina predictions?

I say Boston by 2 and Savard gets the winner

I think the 'Canes are going to take the series.....

The Pens are crying foul saying that Ovie has an illegal curve on his stick (excuse the hidden innuendo there).

What a bunch of freakin' babies. Wah-wah-wah. Shut up and play.
That quote sure makes Crosby look like a big douche.

I'm glad that Ovechkin responded with a goal in the first period of the game today! :D

Back to the Coyotes story...... today's edition of HockeyCentral (the podcast from Sportsnet, not the Versus show) went into some great detail about the situation. It's a pretty interesting situation, and it really seems like Balsillie is playing some chess here.
Oh yeah, one thing they mentioned at the end of the show was that Balsillie offered Gretzky part-ownership in the team and also offered to name the arena after Walter Gretzky (Wayne's father).

He's really trying hard to get the public on his side for this fight. I hope he wins.

Balsillie will get what he wants I think, one way or another. Ahhh playing to Wayne's Ego eh? Smart business man.

Not to Wayne's ego. Wayne is a humble guy. He's playing to the Canadian public.
Making Wayne a part-owner and naming the arena after Canada's favorite father will make the entire country j*zz in their pants simultaneously.

/too much? :D

Humble yes, but he's still totally playing to his Ego and of course the Canadian public.

So instead of snow, the country will be covered in j*zz. Could be interesting to see :D

It was just a matter of time for the Caps. There was no way they were gonna win this game, especially in OT. The Pens were just dominating OT.

Great game.

^^^^^^^^I didn't get to watch..... I had class tonight. Boo....... I made sure to continuously update the Sportstacular App on my iPhone to follow the scores. Ah well, at least it was a good class.

Go 'Canes go! Up 2-1 on the big bad Bruins..... good stuff!

Q: What do you call a game with 10 forwards and no defence?

A: Pittsburgh vs Washington

I've been enjoying watching this series, I never get to see those two teams -- on the rare occasion they are on for TV for me, it isn't a time I can see them.

Capitals vs Blackhawks would definitely be an exciting final, but I don't see either of these (Pens or Caps) would have an answer against the Redwings, Ducks, or Canucks.

I can't say a thing about the other series -- I don't think I've seen Boston or Carolina play this year :(

The league really needs to do something about this schedule. At least we get to play them more than once every 3 years, but I'd still like to see some of these teams more often!

^^^^^^ The NHL did change the schedule already. They went back to how the schedule was prior to the lockout, where:

Each team will play the other four teams in their division six times (3 home games and 3 road games) and play the other 10 teams in their conference four times (2 home games and 2 road games). The remaining 18 games will be played against the teams in the other conference. That ensures that each team will play every other team in the league at least one time during the regular season.

(taken from here. I don't agree with his opinion though.)

If you remember, the schedule they used from the season after the lockout until last season really sucked. There were teams in the league that you never played at all. At least now you play every team at least once. It's not perfect, but I don't know what else you can do when you've got 30 teams and only 82 games to play.

There's not much that the NHL can do about giving us West-coasters more opportunity to see East-coast teams. I mean, I guess they can shave 1 game off of the divisional series, but then there would be an uneven number, and you would only be playing 1 more game against divisional rivals than against conference rivals. The NHL is a region-based league, and needs strong divisional rivalries to survive.

The time difference is the killer. If east-coast games didn't start at 4:30 pm in the afternoon, it wouldn't be so difficult to watch.

It is an improvement, but not by much...

We used to play, for example, the Capitals once every three years (that would be in Vancouver once every 6 years). They've improved it slightly - now at least we play them once every year, but it is still only in our time zone every other year. Honestly, that sucks.

The alternative that was suggested was to reduce the (interminable) pre-season by a few games, then every team would play at least twice -- so you would play every building every year. That would be a huge improvement.

Although this will get dangerously close to a Bettman rant, and then I would never be able to stop, so I'd better stop while I'm ahead :)

Definitely. I'd love to seem them push the east cost games to 5:30 (and I'd even be willing to pull our games back an hour) so each coast could at least see half a game, but there's not much to be done here.

Still, I'd love to see the home-and-home schedule at least. Then I could see what some of these teams look like!

What's this? You don't cut class to watch a hockey game of epic proportions?!?!?!

If I'm not mistaken, each time the Devils/Canes played each other the winner of the series went to the SC Finals.

I dunno what happened last night, but the defence was totally nonexistent.

This is the matchup the NHL dreamed for, but somehow I think they wished this happened in the EC Finals.

I'd love to see a Caps/Hawks final, but I dunno if that's gonna happen.

^^^^ nope, unfortunately I can't skip these classes- I don't want to miss anything. If you ask me, the NHL should change it's schedule to accommodate ME.

Oooooo..... I'd love to see the 'Canes get to the finals. That would be such a great story.

stcanard..... wtf is going on with your Canucks!?!?!?
