You think Portal will be taken away ont he 25th? I didn't see it that way at all.

Anyway, Portal just updated in Steam, and now the actual portals are black, and I can't see where I'm going :(
They used to work fine and I could see where the portal lead.

Yes, you should lose access to portal when the time expires. They did the same thing with MW2 a few weeks ago.

Disabling Desktop Effects to Gain performance!!!

Maybe if we disable the desktop effects we could gain some performance. You can note that when we start a game in Windows the Aero gets disabled. Desktop Effects of Mac OS X seems to keep on when starting portal!!! Someone knows how to disable it?

No, you keep it forever, just do a little research before using your intuition. Valve is a really, really great company!

Did anyone else have issues with tap to click in Portal?

I had to actually press the trackpad in as a button (tapping wouldn't work), but every once in a while my gun would keep firing because I tapped, and wouldn't stop firing until I took my finger off the trackpad.

recent Steam update seems to have broken Portal, they are black when you shoot them...

Way to Go VALVE!

meh they'll get it right, hopefully by tonight

Could someone do some rough benchmarks of Portal or TF2 in native mac steam vs. in bootcamp/parallels? Thanks!

Portals black for me also!

Also is it definite that Portal will be taken back off us on the 24th?? Is it not free for good for those who downloaded it before 24th???

Thats crazy

Valve doesn't make a habit of giving things away for free, so you probably won't have the game after the 24th.

Can't tell if this is sarcastic or not :p I haven't seen Valve give away much for free without taking it away again later. The Modern Warfare 2 for free thing is one such example. But I could always be wrong...

A workaround to fix the portals is to start the game in windowed mode, and then switching back to fullscreen. See here how to do this.

well over 12 hours later and still have a broken Portal game. Rbarris says they are working on it though

....yay?

Edit; what I am really curious for is what will happen next Wednesday. They said that each Wednesday will hold a release of something new. Since TF2 was in beta, I assume that's what we'll see next. But I would love if they could port the whole HL series asap.

Hrmm... from reading around it sounds like running in bootcamp still offers significantly better performance. Can anyone confirm this?

Portal is faster for me on Windows.
Along with some other issues noticed on the OSX version (portals being black/opaque, subtitles not working properly). There are many threads on the steam forums about various osx issues.

Portal is faster on Windows (for now)
Valve is currently updating and messing with Portal though to get the most out of it.

Yup, it will continue to be faster on windows too for the foreseeable future. The major problem is apple's (relatively) poor graphics drivers along with their lack of proper graphics APIs. If the engine was rebuilt from the ground up for OSX the performance would be better, but still lacking compared to bootcamp performance.

Also, looks like portal may indeed stay on your computer after the 24th according to valve's forums. Here's hoping!

15" MBP, i7, Hi-res
Resolution: 1680x1050
Settings: Fully maxed and enabled, with the exception of Texture set at High instead of Very High
No AA, AF at 16x
Portal Depth Rendering at 2 (What is this setting by the way?)

Frame rate is usually 59. Around portals and in the elevator is usually 29.

I'm just hoping Open GL gets more optimized, Apple releases even better GPU drivers, and the Source engine keeps improving. One day matching the performance of Windows.

T-Minus a couple hours until HL2 series is released via Steam to play in native form.

I will be posting my Benches for the game asap.

Also on a side note, Killing Floor that was released last Wednesday run on maximum settings on my native res of 1440x900

Looks great, and I get 80 FPS almost always. (to get FPS in game pull up console "~" and then type "stat fps")

I have also been talking with the guys at Tripwire on the Steam forums, they say they are going to "optimize the rendering pipeline" in an update. = good news

Sweeeet! Half-Life runs so well on slower hardware that I have high hopes for it. I guess the performance will be similar to Portal.

It's funny, I've never been a PC gamer, but since I've gone mac, I've started to play a couple of games (just Portal and Monkey Island).
