I believe the official announcement has been put back to 3pm.

I don't know the reason for the delay, but given that Capello is calling each player prior to the announcement I reckon it might be because Ashley Cole has 'misplaced' his mobile again...

EDIT: Do we get to find out the squad numbers today as well? Not that I'm a saddo when it comes to this sort of thing or owt.

I'm not sure about the squad numbers. I think I read somewhere today that it would be announced as well but I can't remember where it was now.

I can imagine Capello will probably reveal his chosen 23 at a press conference or something, and a list - complete with those all important squad numbers - will appear on the FA's website shortly after.

This is all very exciting stuff. I'm planning on calling in at the sports shop on my way home tonight and getting a Theo Walcott shirt printed up with the correct squad number and everything. :)

Oh. Hang on a minute...

JC, you aren't alone, the squad numbers are what I'm waiting for too. :D

Although, some are pretty obvious already.

this whole announcment is a farce.. it's like all the journo's are revealing who's in/out on twitter before the official statement!

just release the england squad names already! we all know we will lose anyway!! lol

Yes, but if we have a good world cup, we can get all the way to the Semi Finals before that happens via Penalty shootout!

Rooney won't answer his phone.
I'd be surprised if Rooney knows how to answer his phone...

Although, some [squad numbers] are pretty obvious already.
Indeed - Terry will be 6, Gerrard 8, Rooney 10, and so on – but we'll have to see who gets handed the polyester rag marked with a big number 1. Will it be James (the likely pick) due to him being the senior 'keeper, or will it go to Green or Hart – which would indicate they'd probably be our first choice custodian ahead of the Portsmouth player.

Of course, the sooner the numbers are released the sooner the FA and Umbro can start flogging the printed shirts so they won't hang around. ;)

Actually Lampard will be 8

If true, not a surprise on form, maybe re Capello finally getting round to it.
Well, I think most people expected him to take a slight chance on him. After all, Adam Johnson doesn't seem to be off to SA and SWP is, yet Johnson has been keeping him out of the team at MC. And you know he's going to include Heskey, a striker who's scored what, 5 goals all season?

My mistake, I would imagine you're quite right – Lampard generally gets that number when he's in the starting eleven for England, Gerrard has flitted about a bit with his assigned starting eleven number under Capello but historically has tended to don the number 4. He does of course wear 8 for Liverpool, which is probably why I had that number in mind.

EDIT: The latest word is that the England squad will apparently be announced at 4pm via the FA website.

Disappointed if Adam Johnson isn't in, skilled left-footed winger comes along and is left out! Re Walcott, I'd like to have seen him tried up front, but on the wing? Maybe Capello looked at it in training? Heskey, they just love the work he does.

Cheers,
OW

The FA website is down, probably crumbled under the weight of people logging on and refreshing it constantly.

If anyone wants to start a 'OMG! Its Tuesday and teh FA.com is down!!+1' thread, please feel free. :D

Sky are saying that the 7 that will miss out are: Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker, Leighton Baines, Adam Johnson, Theo Walcott and Darren Bent.

If that is the case, I agree with 21 of the 23 that are going. I would not have taken Carrick or SWP, and taken Huddlestone and Adam Johnson.

I'm with you on Johnson, but I'd have left Huddlestone behind. I'm disappointed to see Dawson potentially miss out.

I assume you would have dropped SWP for Johnson. Who would you have dropped for Dawson? Would you take Carrick?

Actually, I'd have taken Charles N'Zogbia too (he qualifies).

I wouldn't take Carrick, rumour has it he's on his way out of Old Trafford after not cutting the mustard. Personally I'd take Scott Parker, he's had a fantastic season and I'd have liked him to carry that on and make the squad.

Walcott's released a statement - little surprised he's done so before the squad is officially announced even though it's been widely known for a while now.

I am very disappointed not to be included in the squad going out to South Africa, but completely respect Mr Capello’s decision. I would like to wish the team the best of luck and hope they have a really successful tournament.

Yep.

Who would you have dropped for Dawson? Would you take Carrick?
I'd take Carrick, especially given the concerns over Barry's fitness going into the tournament. As for the centre backs, I'd take Dawson in place of King or Carragher. The former is well worthy of his place given his abilities but I have worries with his fitness, whereas the latter hasn't really done it for me this past season.

I'm also not impressed with Carragher spitting his dummy out over not being a first choice international and thus retiring, only to come back in once the team has qualified and he's realised it's his last chance to play at a World Cup. I know he's versatile and can cover at full back if needs be, but none the less I'd leave him behind and look at other options as cover. For one, Milner can play in that position if we get desperate.

My mistake, I'd have taken Dawson over Upson too.
I'd probably go with Upson over Carragher. Neither have had great seasons but I'd give the West Ham man the nod out of the two. West Ham won the World Cup back in 1966, don't you know? :p

That's why I'd choose Parker over Carrick, we need the "Spirit of '66" don't ya know :p

The Italians really don't like the World Cup ball. And they are not alone. Which brings me to my idea:

The World Cup finals should be played with the same ball as used in World Cup qualifying. Fine, Adidias can introduce a new ball for each world cup but they have to introduce it at the start of qualifying. That way players will have had two years of playing with it and will know how it will behave. It seems silly that they used one ball in qualifying and now have to use a different ball for the finals.
