thanks to all the injuries the germans only had to cut Beck from their squad

The former. MLS is improving, but the USA is also exporting more players these days. No matter how good the MLS is, it's probably not going to be a top tier league, so for the forseeable future our WC squads are going to consist primarily of players based in Europe.

to measure a league improving perhaps somebody with too much time on his hands could calculate which leagues have how many players at the world cup... that would be more interesting regarding leagu strenght

edit: i jsut looked up: Casillas already moaned about the +teamgeist in 2006...
and after all Spain got the european championship 2 years ago on a modified design of the teamgeist ;)

Walcott clearly could be a great player. His 3 against Croatia is the proof of that. I don't think Wenger can gel well with the English players and his lack of a suitable intuition with Walcott has resulted in a crippling lack of confidence in Walcott. (Didn't he score coming back from injury towards the end of the season and then not get on the pitch again for four games? Something like that. It would kill me.) Wenger has said he doesn't like English players as he has been let down by English players in the past. An atrocious thing to say but .. he said it. I'm comfy with Englishness but I've travelled a bit and some people are downright weird and I think Wenger suffers from that. He is not comfortable in English culture that's why he buys French players all the time or if not French then French speaking Africans, Belgians Swiss etc. As for Walcott, Wenger should quit trying to model him as a winger who comes in and simply make him an out and out striker. There he's got nothing to think about except accelerate and shoot. He still could make it to the big time.

I'd let Cesc go and buy Scott Parker. Him and Ramsey would be great. Great wheels and never ending energy. Gourcuff is not 25 million euros good no matter how much Arsenal get for Cesc.!

Agree re Walcott, if Wenger persists in playing him on the wing then he should find a club that will play him up front. After around 4 years, his progress as a winger has stalled.

North Korea - pleasantly surprised that a few players play outside Korea DPR.

Cheers,

Interesting that Crouchie got #9...some relevant stats:

World Cup Squad Analysis

I'm sure Jaffa will appreciate this, but I crunched through the World Cup Squads and came up with some numbers.

23 players a squad, 32 squads = 736 players. 3 of which do not have a club team. Of the remaining 733 players, they play for clubs in the following countries:

118 - England
85 - Germany
79 - Italy
61 - Spain
43 - France
33 - Netherlands
25 - Japan
21 - Greece, Mexico
20 - North Korea, Portugal
16 - South Africa
14 - Honduras, Russia, Turkey
13 - South Korea
12 - New Zealand
11 - Argentina
10 - Chile, Scotland, Switzerland
9 - Denmark
8 - Belgium
7 - USA
6 - Brazil, Israel
4 - Paraguay, Romania
3 - Algeria, Ghana, Poland
2 - Australia, China, Columbia, Norway, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Uruguay
1 - Austria, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, UAE

Of course, some of those numbers (eg North Korea) are because of a large number of home-based players. So, what if I remove the home-based players and just look at foreigners playing in each country:

95 - England
62 - Germany
56 - Italy
41 - Spain
32 - France
24 - Netherlands
14 - Russia, Turkey
11 - Portugal
10 - Scotland
8 - Belgium
7 - Greece, Mexico
6 - Japan, Israel
5 - Argentina
4 - Romania
3 - Brazil, Chile, Poland, Switzerland, USA
2 - Denmark, China, Columbia, Norway, Ukraine
1 - Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Qatar, Saudia Arabia, Sweden, UAE.

And finally, which teams have the most home-based players:

23 - England, Germany, Italy
20 - North Korea, Spain
19 - Japan
16 - South Africa
14 - Mexico, Greece, Honduras
13 - South Korea
12 - New Zealand
11 - France
9 - Netherlands, Portugal
7 - Denmark, Switzerland, Chile
6 - Argentina
4 - USA, Paraguay
3 - Algeria, Ghana, Brazil
2 - Uruguay, Slovenia. Australia, Serbia, Slovakia
1 - Cameroon, Ivory Coast
0 - Nigeria

Germany's lineup against Bosnia today:

Neuer-Friedrich-Mertesacker-Lahm-Badstuber-Khedira-Scheweinsteiger-Podolski-Trochowski-Klose-Ozil

Looks like the starting 11 right there...:D

Mexico beats Italy 2-1...sure it's a friendly but...the aging Champions don't look good...:p

-J.-

haha even more hilarious would be if both keepers would injure themselves so that he has to paly the keeper

that said for the germany- bosnia game: as soon as Klose (bad performance) was subsituted with Cacau and Trochowski (horrible performance) with Müller this game turned around hard ... in the first half Bosnia at least had a chance (and a goal for 1:0)... in the second half this game became a one way street
and the bosnian players with causing 2 penalty kicks  are even more ridiculous

edit: this has to be one of the most undisciplinary defenses ever... yet another brutal foul in the bosnian penalty box...

Why? (I understand nothing about football even though I love the World Cup )
That post was a little tongue in cheek, there's remarkably little chance of North Korea qualifying for the knock out stages – Brazil, Portugal and the Ivory Coast are the three other teams drawn in North Korea's group and they're all a lot better than the communist cloggers.

Oh ok. :p

In other news I have a day off on the second portuguese match!! :D I'll actually get to watch the game somewhere fun instead of watching it at work.
