Anyone have any predictions for Day 1 games...

Mexico vs South Africa (I say Mexico 2, SA 1)
Uruguay vs France (First WC upset Uruguay 1, France 0)

Anyone else? :)

-J.-

Mexico 3 - 0 SA (although I hope SA score as the stadium would go mental)
Uruguay 1 - 1 France

If England wants to win the WC in a near future (caus' it ain't going to be this year), they really need to get REAL and GOOD goalkeepers...

Mexico - SA : 3-0
Uruguay - France : 1-2

In 2006 before the WC, everybody was saying France will go out in the 1st round. They went to the final, and should have beat those silly italians.
Same will happen this year.

I think that Uruguay have the potential to put on over on France.

I'm going to go with a 3-1 victory for Mexico in the opener, with Uruguay to bamboozle the French 1-0.

This obviously means the French will record a resounding victory while South Africa will emerge triumphant...

I don't agree with that - they're not the best in the world but they're good enough. Performance of the outfield players is far more critical.

I think England will miss having a dead-ball specialist like Beckham. Judging by comments so far about the ball (don't they say the same things every four years?) and the thinner atmosphere, I reckon a fair few goals will be scored from free kicks.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see S.A. beat Mexico.

Can't wait now, gearing up for Saturday - as this forum is A: English language and B: Primarily used by the English-speaking world (with respect for every other nationality that uses it), I'm looking forward to some good natured baiting between USA and England fans, and Socceroos and All Whites fans should any of us play each other.

Good luck everyone.......unless you're playing England:p

So here are my plans for Saturday:
Set off from Renfrew (near Glasgow) at 7.30am
Drive the length of the UK, avoiding cars with silly flags on them
Arrive at the south coast at 4.30pm
(could do it quicker but I've got kids)
Fire up the BBQ, chill the beer, put saltire in prominent position
Watch the game at 7.30pm
Not sure how neutral I'm going to play it! Depends on the size of the neighbours!

In my predictor I've got
SA 0-2 Mexico
Uruguay 0-2 France
S Korea 1-0 Greece
Argentina 2-1 Nigria
England 2-2 USA

Since the timing of the games will not be perfect here in the US (Central Time), a group from work is planning to go to this local restaurant for late lunches to watch at least part of the daily matches.

Should be fun. Not as much fun as being in London in 2006 and watching the whole nation follow the cup.

While I'm sure you're travelling down to see family, friends or similar, I still can't get out of my head the notion of the Clan Fuzzy travelling the whole length of England in a saltire-emblazoned car purely to wind up as many passing English folk as possible. :D ;)

Good luck on avoiding those bloody car flags, I fear your luck will be out though – they're everywhere. In fact, I was branded unpatriotic by a couple in a supermarket the other day when they discovered our car isn't bedecked in them.

"Don't you want England to win the World Cup?" they scoffed.

Honestly. Some people... :p

Anyone here going to watch the FIFA Kickoff Celebration concert Thursday morning at 11 PM PST/2PM EST?

Probably just a quick flick, not keen on the acts.

----

Apologies if it has already been posted - about a month old; looks like South Africa is safe from US invasion:

If the folk who put that graphic together are also responsible for sorting out the US team's travel arrangements, Saturday's match will be easier than anticipated if Donovan, Altidore et al are pottering about in Rio rather the Rustenburg. :)

If this is the case, my prediction: England 3 (Rooney 2, Crouch) - USA 1 (Carragher OG)

Yes, it's highly selective patriotism though, isn't it. They're happy to drive a French car, watch the match on a TV made in Taiwan and drink Spanish beer, but the fact that I haven't put a flag (made in China) on my car window makes me somehow unpatriotic.
Nowt wrong with a bit of flag waving but it takes more than that to support your nation.

Hmm, but then how many people drive around in an English car? :p

Well, off topic but choose from Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Vauxhall plus all the premium brands like Bentley, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Land Rover. Okay they might be owned by foreign conglomerates but they are still designed and built here by Englanders.

I was merely pointing out the fact that people have no problem with not driving an English car but think that putting a plastic flag on the side once every four years makes them a patriot and a supporter.

And for the record, I drive a 1976 Triumph, in British Racing Green, made in Coventry, England. A long time ago.

Anyway, never mind all that, open a bottle of Pellegrino, turn up the Sony Bravia, put a pizza in the oven and a bowl of nachos on the table and celebrate being English!!!!!!! Until we lose to the Yanks.

This story on Soccernet made me chuckle:

RUSTENBERG, South Africa -- The Brazilian referee and his assistants who will work the England-United States match at the World Cup have been studying English-language obscenities the players might use.

Carlos Simon will referee Saturday's match in Rustenburg, assisted by Roberto Braatz and Altemir Hausmann. They want to ensure players can't get away with abuse.

"We have to learn what kind of words the players say," Hausmann told Brazilian broadcaster Globo Sport. "All players swear and we know we will hear a few."

Braatz says they aren't learning them in "11 different languages, but at least we have to know the swear words in English."

I read a similar story here :)
Carlos Eugênio Simon, who will referee England’s first group C match against the United States in Rustenburg, and his assistants have been given a list of 20 English profanities to clamp down on.

Would love to see that list! :D
