Talking of penalties, I watched a highlights clip of the England v Argentina match from 1998. With all the (justified) praise of Michael Owen's fantastic goal, it's so easy to forget that Shearer scored an absolutely perfect penalty beforehand. Probably the best pure striker of a ball of the last 20 years. Oh, to have a man of his talents available to us.

Still think Owen should have left it for Scholes.:)

Shearer - also handy with his elbow. Re the game, did he have to foul the keeper for Campbell to score?

Argentina - great free kick.

Cheers,
OW

true shearer has been easily the best _english_ central forward in the last 20 years... but in 98 the other side feature also an equal (if not more) skilled classical central forward with Gabriel Batistuta

ahh the glorious 90ties at AC Fiorentina

Batigol scored so many surely he could have let that Roy Keane back pass go.:(

Given England's historic troubles with shootouts, I'm surprised Capello didn't choose a keeper strictly on his penalty-saving stats, an extreme specialist if you will. Since you can bring three keepers, why not bring one purely for penalties?

Very interesting idea LB...for example I do recall Ben Foster of ManU winning a PK shootout this last season...he used his iPod touch for some pre-kick analysis of each shooter's style...Capello should've brought him along...

You could also do the reverse. Have a couple of guys in your squad who's only talent is scoring penalties. Bring them on in the last minute of extra time.

On matters sartorial, that's some shirt Andy Townsend. The spirit of John Barnes lives on. On ITV for the Opening Ceremony; sorry can't capture the screen - probably for the best.

Edit - use of dung beetle confirms what the players think about the ball.

If USA beats England.......I will go and buy me an iPad!

we will. pick out a nice one.

and by the by....The world Cup is in SOUTH AFRICA!!!!!! in case you didn't know. This just in: The World Cup is in South Africa. All the games that fall under the title "2010 World Cup" will be played in South Africa. Because the 2010 World Cup is in South AFrica.

Good God would you let them play already...?

puttign a swarm of bees into the pants of the players might actually improve the game though... 1-2 "ok" scenes from mexiko .. .and none by south africa

Bosnia played better than both when they lost against germany during the test game

what do you usa folks think about the friendly match Usa vs. Turkey ?

I think Turkish team is far better than united states team, they played really well on the first half also, but lost concentration on the second half. Also Usa played really well on the second half too. Although overall Turkish team is way better than United States.

I hope United States beats of England and qualifies for further stages...

Quick debate, the first goal (which was anulled) of the match was really a goal. The sidelines referee called "Posicion Adelantada" (don't know the English equivalent... advanced position(?)) and hence Mexico's goal was anulled. However, if we observe the video well, we can see there is still one South African defense man after the Mexican player making the goal valid...

Comments? Was it a goal or not?

Not goal.

To be onside you need to have two from the opposing team closer to the goal line. Normally that means you're offside if you're behind the last defender, because the keeper is the last man, but here the keeper wasn't the last man...but there was only one defender on the line.

Offside.

1-1, btw.

in the second half the game haas become really a lot better than the first half

and yeah that goal was clearly offside... always remember that the goalkeeper is also counted to the offside rule
