sudden death ? you mean like golden/silver goal ? those pretty much were a desaster from 96 to 2004 .. and thats why it's gone again .. nobody liked them

No idea of what golden/silver goal means

I was thinking like NFL. First to score wins

or maybe something like a hockey shootout

but i dont know my soccer rules

My Day 2 Predictions:
Korea 1 - Greece 0
Argentina 2 - Nigeria 1
England 1 - USA 1

I think my Day 2 predictions were pretty good :D

Robert "Gift of Gaffe" Green really made himself a big fixture in all future World Cup blooper reels...:D:p:D:rolleyes::D

Very low scoring start to the WC...

My Day 3 Predictions:
Algeria 1 - Slovenia 1
Ghana 1 - Serbia 0
Germany 3 - Australia 1

-J.-

Is it possible that the English weren't used to the 4,921 feet (1,500 meter) altitude of the Rustenburg area and they started to "run on fumes" at the end of the game? The USA team often trains and plays at higher altitude venues in Salt Lake City, UT and in Colorado and they played well today.

It could have hurt if it was going to extra time in a knockout game.

I thought the USA played Rooney well re running with the ball from deep; they used fair means or foul to stop him before he got going. The referee was too lenient.

Don't know what feed you are getting, but with the one for UK ITV it's as if they have just discovered slow motion.

Cheers,

that was the golden goal rule .. and it only lead to teams playing extra defensive in overtime
which meant crap overtime in most cases
it was tried 8 years and nobody wants it back

that said i only got the south korea result right from my predictions
for tomorrow my guesses:
Algeria - Slovenia: 1 - 1
Ghana - Serbia: 0 - 3
Germany - Australia: 3 - 1

true ... way too much replay... sometimes 1-2 minutes while the game was already running again
but i guess they have changing staff for each games so i suspect other games get better again

Well, I found a better pub...

....the food was terrible, a Stella was $6, the waitresses were sullen, but they had LOTS of BIG screens and the place was full of USA fans, and two very lonely England supporters (and a couple of . It must have been every football fan in Alaska in the same bar.

USA played well overall. We gave up yet another early goal, and both our centerbacks got burned on Gerrard's goal, but our defense tightened up a bit as the game went on and Tim Howard came up huge for us again (despite Heskey's attempt to smash his ribcage and arm). Robbie Findley is very fast but can't do anything with a football, Altidore was solid but unspectacular. I think we matched the English in work rate and physicality and showed good pace in some areas as well. I was also surprised to see us maintain good posession for several spells.

Dempsey's shot wasn't much to write home about, but he tested Green and Green failed the test, so all I care about is that it found the back of the net. ;) Green ain't no Timmy Howard.

Gooch got back fast to track Rooney a few times. There were a few uncalled defensive fouls on both sides like Bradley's shirt-pulling in the penalty box and Carragher's cynical hack on Findley that should have been a second yellow. He gets away with those for Liverpool all the time, I suppose why should we expect any different now?

Overall, I'm pumped!! It's a great result for us, and while we didn't look like world-beaters we played well and go into the next games with confidence! Let's keep it up boys!!!

Alf Ramsey was pragmatic with his england team selection/tactics. When he took over as manager, England had no good wingers so he played 4-3-3 (iirc the only team to win a world cup NOT playing 4-4-2) England don't have 2 decent wingers to rub together yet their playing 4-4-2! Its crazy!

In fact their full backs are better than their wingers *Shakes Head*

A lot of people are commenting on how the lack of technique shown in the game will allow Algeria and Slovenia to sleep easily. I beg to differ. I'm not afraid of either of them, and England are sure to respond with a better performance next time as well.

Is Green done for the tournament now? That was just about the worst goalkeeping error you can make.

Personally, I thought the best player for the US was Onyewu. The guy is fast, tall, powerful etc. I did enjoy watching him play even though I wanted England to win.

Gooch had a very good game indeed - especially considering he's been out injured for so long and really wasn't considered match fit going into this game. Considering that a shaky defense was seen as USA's biggest worry going into the tournament, this game promises well for the future - our back four responded well to the early goal by not being shaken and settling things down.

I should also mention that I think Ashley Cole did a good job of shutting Landon Donovan down for much of the match, which was a contributing factor in USA's struggle to break down England's defense.

Shootouts might be exciting for casual hockey fans, but they are a terrible way to decide a game. Thankfully they are only used in the regular season in the NHL. Penalty shots are much less common in hockey than soccer, so let's use them to decide a game. While we're at it, lets decide tied baseball games after 10 innings with a home run derby and tied basketball games after 1 overtime with a round of HORSE.

There's nothing wrong with ties before the knockout round. Even the NFL will allow a tie if nobody scores in one overtime during the regular season.

Bah, baseball isn't limited by time! That is what makes it great!

and tied basketball games after 1 overtime with a round of HORSE.

why not be like bball and just have overtimes until the game is won then?

I hate ties. College ftball is good with unlimited overtimes if need be

Anyone else watching on ABC know what that god awful buzzing noise in the background is? Sounds like an angry swarm of bees.

If those horns are going to be playing for the rest of the tournament...PLEASE can we end it now. PLEASE.

Have neither of you ever watched a MLS game? Those horns are a fixture even in American games.

I wouldn't mind that, but with only 3 substitutions allowed the players might start dropping after a second set of 30 minute overtimes!

I don't think a game should end in a tie, it can just create problems later on down the road when determining home field advantage for the playoffs or a playoff spot itself. I think every game should end with a winner and a loser. Perhaps hockey should be changed to do a 20 minute overtime then a shootout, to reduce the possibility of a shootout, but I think a game should not end in a tie. With baseball, it's not as big of an issue, games rarely go beyond 11 or 12 innings. Games like the 20 inning marathon the Mets and Cardinals played earlier this season is a rare thing, so I say let them keep going until it's over.

This would be my first time watching a soccer, ahem, football game. I'm not really a fan (is it hockey season yet? :p), but I figured this game was a big deal and I had nothing better to do ;)

The possibility of a game ending in a draw is part of the game of football (soccer). I like it, and don't want it to change - just as I appreciate extra innings in baseball as part of the game.

You can't call it a true overtime in College, they only play downs. Make it a true overtime.

I also don't like the idea of ending a game in a tie, what is the point if there is no true winner or loser.

feh! and the NFL sucks because of that mentality. "We have to a winner.. wah wah wah!". this may be a broad generalization but you strike me as a typical US* sports fan, you have to have 70 points and a bunch of explosions to make it worth seeing.
*i didn't bother to look where you're from. just a knee jerk reaction. feel free to watch the cup and learn.;)

Draws are ace, especially goalless ones. You're quite mistaken, good sir.

AAAaaahhhh, The delicacy that is the beautiful game...)

Chime in with general disapproval of ... those bloody buzzing horns.

ban them now FIFA!!!

Glad to have the draw, we very easily could have beaten you(And vice versa!). If only they'd would've played Buddle sooner. :p:p

lol while i do love the canon blasts at football games after a touchdown, i do appreciate the shutouts when they happen!
