That ball was hit much harder than it looks and sadly Green didn't have time to get in the right position with his body behind the ball...

I hope my sarcasm detector is off, because really that was a regulation save.

Watching a bit of Algeria/Slovenia, my there's a lot of empty seats for this one. Not a great game either.

nah, it's not off. i about half agree. still the ball was hit harder than it looked. as a keeper i know whence i speak. his body should have been behind the ball but he didn't have time to get into position becausethe ball was hit harder than it looked! ... ;)

lol while i do love the canon blasts at football games after a touchdown, i do appreciate the shutouts when they happen!

lol i'm starting to like this guy ...

but i know why the panda is sad...

You .... is, then I'm more then happy for you to keep your American sports as your favoured sports. :) If Football (Soccer) is played with the right tempo with the right tactics and style of play then it is very very entertaining, more so then any other sport, if teams in North America learnt how to play it like that then I'm sure it would be very very popular. :)

Anyway, a very shocking and poor show by England today, but a good omen is that the USA drew with Italy in their first group game in 2006 and Italy went onto win the World Cup. :)

agreed. don't muck up the beautiful game... before you know it the MLS will have a bonus ball portion of the game... :p

There's far too much 'non-football' talk going on.
Well, despite me winning a few £££ after predicting a draw, I do feel kind of robbed. I guess if Rob Green ever applies for US citizenship he's on a winner :)

agreed and well done fizz!

Today was the first day I've watched a football match from start to finish since my AYSO days twenty years ago. I consciously went in with an open mind, and I must say I really enjoyed it - even the draw doesn't bother me.

Looking forward to more!

HUZZAH!!!

No, I'm hoping for the Ivory Coast and North Korea to somehow make it out of that group. Sour grapes from 2006, maybe.

HEAR HEAR! love that orange kit.

Clint Dempsey is not Socrates. A shot straight at you from 25 yards should be easy to deal with, regardless of how hard it was kicked. He didn't even have to move! He was already standing right behind the ball...

Anyway, we can argue about this all day. Let's both hope that Algeria and Slovenia play out this bore draw to make it easier for us to get out of the group...

25 yards is close enough and the ball was hit hard! lol. i'm trying to make you feel better and save green a little grief. he attempted to make the save from more or less a 3/4 qtr angle. he wasn't set up with his body completely behind the ball... ;)

I don't think this blunder should affect Greens place in the team to be honest. The past games he has played with England have all been played with a more than decent performance. The Robert Green after half time did not look like one that was lacking confidence or who would make another mistake. Robert Green will want to put this behind him and I think everyone else should as well. This isn't to say that the blunder wasn't his fault, as it was due to his bad technique.

Also, I dont think just him should be blamed for the draw. Heskey, Wright-Philips and Lennon all had quality chances to score. Heskey and Philips shot straight at the goalkeeper and Lennon decided to go for the cowards way out and cross instead of shooting.

it was low shot pretty much on the center of the goal: a goalkeppers has to have such a ball
if a high ball into the corner slipepd through his hands: no problem ... but this ? entirly his fault

What a bad game Algeria - Slovenia was...
Had to be decided by another huge error.

That game was rough...

Interesting stat...of the 8 goals scored so far (super low total) none have been scored by a true forward (unless you count Clint Dempsey)...

TBO, worst World Cup (or any other large international tournament) I have seen so far.
Below par games, lots of empty seats, irritating noises....

i agree

and while a lot of people talk about the great team argentina has ... they are way weaker than 2006 it seems

in 2006 there were 8 goals after the first _2_ games ...

the good thing: it can only get better

I thought I was the only one not impressed...my god the cult of Messi drives me nuts...wake me up when he scores in the World Cup...yes he's definitely top 10 material...his team makes him look better than he is...Argentina is weak and the announcers pump them up too much...those 3 old defenders in the back will get burnt...they do have quite the roster of forwards...when Milito comes off the bench or Kun Aguero to replace Tevez or Higuain...that's impressive...

Messi sure is a great player but the argentina system is way to focused on him :"give the ball messi and look what happens" .. simply doesn't work

true their offensive has a lot of names but higuain and tevez haven't really shown anything so far .. especially higuain was been rather bad in the first game

and not to forget the biggest disaster in the first game: the right midfielder "jonas" who was always late and constantly making mistakes ... but don't worry he get's covered by demichelis in the back

The problem for 'keepers is this — a striker can spend a whole match missing chances, but if they get it right just once then they're the big hero, the match-winning goalscorer.

For 'keepers though the opposite is true, you can do everything right for 89 minutes but make one error and you're the clueless idiot who has cost the country dearly. I feel quite sorry for them sometimes, yes Green could and should have done better but it's happened, casting him as the national villain serves little purpose and changes nothing.

Still, at least the press has found their scapegoat early and we've at least got a break from the non-stop 'we're gonna win the World Cup' gumph while they're busy pointing fingers.

Ghana very solid game but not really effective enough up front .. against serbia it was enough because of their defense being not really disciplinary enough but against better teams it might not be enough

Serbia: what can i say.. again a massive dissapointment up front considering their talent pool... and to make it worse their defense was also error prone

how they won their qualification group against France ,Romania and us pitiful austrians is beyond me after this game

Or you can be like our keeper in the Euro 2004 who made the winning shot in the penalties against England. :D

^^^^I am, shame Nani won't be playing. Plus am I the only one dying to see what a CR9 foul will be with the new ball?

No, what's he come up with this time? Better free kicks in today's games, i.e. on target.

anjinhamarota - cheering Portugal - hope they win, have them in a sweepstake and there is a small % of Portuguese blood in my veins.

ethical - England reaction - the worry for me is how stubborn is Capello? Is he prepared to change to 1/3 up front?

theITGuy and takao - Messi - having Di Maria in my fantasy team I was frustrated to see him ignored when in good positions, the ball being played to the centre/Messi instead.

Cheers,
OW
