Well, it seems Caragher is off to South Africa and not simply to buy some Biltong and a Vuvuzela. Considering many Liverpool fans haven't rated his performances at all this season, I'm not sure this is a good move...

Carragher taught Rafael D S all he knows about pulling players down; at least we will see him getting ripped a new one.

Edit: What the hell are Carragher, Warnock and Carrick doing anywhere near the squad?

The 30:

Green, Hart, James

Baines, Carragher, A Cole, Dawson, Ferdinand, G Johnson, King, Terry, Upson, Warnock

Barry, Carrick, J Cole, Gerrard, Huddlestone, A Johnson, Lampard, Lennon, Milner, Parker, Walcott, Wright-Phillips

Bent, Crouch, Defoe, Heskey, Rooney

Cheers,
OW

Looks alright to me. Pleased to see A Johnson in there, he seems to have been playing really well, as well as Michael Dawson.

It's always a shame to see Heskey in the squad, but there was no chance of him not being picked was there?

I guess the idea of only picking players that have been playing regularly and are fully fit went out the window then.

I thought Zamora may have got the nod ahead of Bent

Any thoughts on which 7 don't make it to SA?

There is no way we take 3 left backs, so one of Warnock or Baines isn't going to make it.
One of the strikers isn't going either.

Carragher hasn't had a great season but apart from a few high-profile mistakes I wouldn't say he's had a bad season either. He certainly strengthens the squad, is fit and has as much experience as you could ask for.

Bent and SWP aren't going to make it. Not sure about Huddlestone or Warnock either. And will Capello really take the gamble with King?

Surely this must be Heskey's last World Cup? England's strikeforce is getting on in years....by the next World Cup, every striker in the current squad except Rooney will be 30 or older, and Rooney himself will be 28. Food for thought for you English-types. What players look like future England strikers?

...

Let's hope he doesn't come up against anyone who can run. What's your motive for supporting him?;)

Does the USA team pick itself, or are there some tough decisions?

Heskey always seems to partner best with Rooney, though he's not very good taken on his own. I wish Capello would play a 4-5-1 since all the other striking options aren't that great. That might also help with the ongoing question of how Gerrard and Lampard can effectively play together.

I guess Brown didn't make it back in time, so it's going to be Glen Johnson or bust at right back? Opposing left wingers are licking their chops. Milner might have to play some right wing to help out defensively.

The US squad mostly picks itself except for those who are coming back from injury, such as Onyewu and Davies and a few others.

Gerrard and Lampard playing together ? easy: 1 on the field and 1 on the bench ... that way they are not standing on each others toes all the time

also it opens up 1 slot for having a second DM or offensive midfielders on the wing (i suspect england will be playing 4-5-1 anyway)

edit: in other news the prelimary german squad

GK: Butt, Neuer, Wiese
Df: Aogo, Badstuber, Beck, Boateng, Friedrich, Jansen, Lahm, Mertesacker, Tasci, Westermann
MF: Ballack, Khedira, Kroos, Marin, Özil, Schweinsteiger, Träsch, Trochowski
AT: Cacau, Gomez, Kießling, Klose, Müller, Podolski

and 4 being eliminated until the world cup

From the 30, I've picked the 23 that I'd... er... pick, assuming everyone is in good enough fitness come the deadline.

The 'keepers pick themselves, in defence I (regrettably) still think King is too much of a risk to take, so I plumped for Upson even though he wasn't in my preferred squad. I've three specialist fullbacks in there, at a pinch if injuries or suspensions force it Milner can play there so I've a bit of a plan B.

I'm thinking Parker is there as a back up for Barry and his dodgy ankle. If Gareth isn't better in time, I think Parker will get the nod.

Up front, Heskey has long been an effective foil for his strike partners, even if his own goalscoring is less that what you'd want. Rooney is an automatic choice, Crouch has proved his effectiveness at this level, so then the choice for the final spot came down to Bent and Defoe. In the end, I went for the Spurs man – I suspect though that Capello will be taking a very, very close look at these two in the pre-tournament friendlies with regards to his final decision.

In other World Cup news, Richard Garcia has been named in Australia's provisional 31-strong squad – the only Hull City player to have made his country's selection. Fingers crossed. :)

I agree he's not fast, but you could make the exact same argument against Terry.

And yes, I am completely biased. ;)

Does the USA team pick itself, or are there some tough decisions?

It is more self-selecting than England due to lack of depth and uneven squad quality. The following players are usually locks on a starting position when healthy:

Howard

Cherundolo Bocanegra Onyewu Pierce

Clark Bradley Dempsey Donovan

Altidore Ching (though usually one or the other plus another speedier forward)

Most of the foreign-based players will make the squad, the rest will be selected from the best of our MLS players.

I think DaMarcus Beasley's days are numbered. He may make other games and tournaments but not the WC.

Right back has been a trouble spot, we only have Heath Pierce and Jonathan Spector (and the ageless Frankie Hedjuk, but I think his time has finally passed). Our midfield is our strongest asset but we are very short on strikers, especially with Charlie Davies out and Brian McBride retired. Davies may be doing full training in time for the World Cup but he is not going to be even close to match fitness, so I can't see him making a shock return (though it would be a good story).

There has been a bit of buzz about LA striker Edson Buddle but I think he is too raw, even if he is in form. I'd take Eddie Johnson over him.

I'm sure I said the same back in 2002 :p

Maybe we'll be saying the same in 2014? :D

Gerrard and Lampard playing together ? easy: 1 on the field and 1 on the bench ... that way they are not standing on each others toes all the time

I agree somewhat, although Capello has gotten them to play together on occasion. In order to prove I am not terribly biased (take that oscillatewildly :D) I'd bench Gerrard as Lampard is in good form and Stevie G has had an awful season.

So takao, who do you think gets cut from Germany's squad? Badstuber seemed terrible in the Champions League.

The US 30 man squad has been released:

Goalkeepers: Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann, Brad Guzan.

Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein, Steve Cherundolo, Jay DeMerit, Clarence Goodson, Chad Marshall, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce, Jonathan Spector.

Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley, Alejandro Bedoya, Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Stuart Holden, Sacha Kljestan, Robbie Rogers, Jose Francisco Torres.

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle, Brian Ching, Robbie Findley, Herculez Gomez, Eddie Johnson.

Ha! once again my powers of prediciton are a joke. Beasley made it - at least to this roster. Predicted cuts:

Goodson, Marshall
Bedoya, Rogers, Torres
Gomez, Findley or Buddle

I hate cutting two of my Columbus players, but I feel like Rogers' performances in the USA shirt have not been his best, and Marshall gets injured a bit too much for my liking. I also like Torres but he is often overlooked by Bradley as well.

Spain's 30 man squad has 5 goalkeepers:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), David De Gea (Atletico de Madrid), Diego Lopez (Villareal), Jose Manuel 'Pepe' Reina (Liverpool), Victor Valdes (Barcelona).
Defenders: Raul Albiol (Real Madrid), Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Cesar Azpilicueta (Osasuna), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid).
Midfielders: Xabier Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Javier Martinez (Athletic Bilbao), Marcos Senna (Villarreal), David Silva (Valencia), Xavi Hernandez (Barcelona).
Forwards: Santiago Cazorla (Villarreal), Jesus Navas (Sevilla), Juan Manuel Mata (Valencia), Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona), Daniel Guiza (Fenerbache), Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao), Alvaro Negredo (Sevilla), Fernando Torres (Liverpool), David Villa (Valencia).

true but the team would benefit much more from an additional player on the wings or in front of the defense keeping the central midfielder back covered

So takao, who do you think gets cut from Germany's squad? Badstuber seemed terrible in the Champions League.

considering it his his first pro-season and he from the beginning made it into the starting line up at bayern i wouldn't underestimated him
sure he had 2-3 bad games but he is one of the few "lefties" in the german defense i suspect he will make it on the bench as backup

with the german squad it's easier to name the absolute safe bets: in the defense: Lahm, Westermann, fantastic seasons
Mertesacker,Friedrich (not in top shape but extremely expierenced)
Boateng, Aogo having also good season but they are newcomers to the squad
so i suspect the not so great Beck,Jansen and Tasci being candidates for cuts
midfield: Ballack, Schweinsteiger: absolutly safe for having starting positions.. schweinsteiger relearned as DM is even better than before
Kroos: currently he makes more brilliant through/killer passes per game than other midfielders make per season...
Marin: also fantastic shape currently with great dribblings in small spaces combined with huge work rate
Özil: another great attacker, but currently out of form
Träsch, Khedira,Trochowski are rather average so i suspect they won't all 3 be going to south africa...

Attackers:
Kießling: got the pace and works like an animal up front, is in strong shape in the club and combined with Kroos incredible dangerous, if Löw cuts him i suspect he is insane or drunk (21 goals)
Müller:great shape, this season was his first pro-season from the start and he played 50 games and scored 19 goals, can also play as midfielder
Cacau: played a good season but not overwhelming
Gomez: rather out of luck currently but still great as center/joker
Klose & Podolski: horribly shape: 5 goals _combined_ this season but are well known for playing strong in the national teams even when having weak periods at the club

And so the World Cup build up begins. Not only have we got Venables, Taylor, Pearce and Daglish advertising TVs for Sony, but Peter Crouch is now advertising Pringles

In light of the "Crouchy's having his nachos" anecdote, it seems strangely appropriate, no? And you know you want to see The Robot again. :D

I am happy that 2 soccer players from the Los Angeles galaxy are leaving to south africa!!!! Edson Buddle and Landon Donavan! :D Saturday is their last game before they depart to the US soccer camp @ NJ

I think I've got my surrogate team for this year! Who are they playing? :D

Until you mentioned it, I had somehow managed to purge from my memory 'Friday Night's All Wright'
