Indeed.

Like McClaren and Eriksson before him, Capello has chosen not to call me up.

I'm 34 now, and let's be honest at my age this was really my last chance to play in a World Cup. I've given the matter a lot of thought, and I've decided that the time has come to announce – with regret – that I am no longer available for selection for the national side. :(

It's a travesty.

and who's this Apricot guy who has been called as a replacement? Must be from Grimsby

Mr Cake, Fabio Capello seems to be implying that your presence in the dressing room was an "unhealthy" influence on the squad. Would you care to comment on that?

Add garlic to the spices and the opposition may want to give them that extra yard.

I think it's the threat of trying to mention as many fruits as he can during his BBC interview.

Cheers,

As an aside, a couple of folk have asked me if I've any plans for a MacRumors Fantasy World Cup competition, following on from the Premier League version we've run over the last couple of seasons.

The answer is yes and I'm currently looking into a few of the free online games to see which would best suit our purposes, so what I'm basically saying is watch this space and I'll get something sorted out in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

As you were.

Two ways to solve the problem I suppose.

First, we have the rumoured switch to 3-5-2. This carries the advantage that we have in Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson a pair of attack minded wing-backs who like to get forward – they should be able to support attacks with the confidence that there's an extra centre-back covering things, and of course they can slot back into defence should the opposition throw their best at us. If we get it right, potentially we can get the best out of Cole and Johnson's attacking instincts but not at the cost of sacrificing defensive stability.

Alternatively, we could just take another defensive midfielder instead of Barry, play a 4-4-2 and not make needless changes to our system on the eve of the world's biggest football tournament...

Very good! :p
But how much does a Greek urn?

About three drachmas a week.

Defensive midfielder - Radio 5 Live mentioned that Ferguson persuaded Capello not to take Hargreaves. Maybe Ledley King can do the job?

Ballack - out injured.

Triesman - I'd say handbags at dawn, but they've already tried that.

Cheers,
OW

If USA finish second in our group, we'll face Germany in the first knockout round...but I can't be happy Ballack is out. The World Cup is about the best players playing in the world's top tournament. I hate to see any big names missing. Even players I don't like, such as "CR9"

"Penalty feints" are to be banned at the World Cup.

Not sure how I feel about this. Scoring a goal is often about fooling the keeper anyway, and there is a a real art to stopping and cheekily dinking the ball past a committed keeper. Still, my favorite penalties are when the taker confidently smashes the ball into the roof of the net rather than the risky weak roller.

Oh, and Gary Lineker has quit his column at the Mail after the Treisman affair. I think he is right to distance himself from that rag, Triesman may have been very foolish but the newspaper really comes across as the villain here.

.

I have to agree with the decision LB...too many little cutesy games are being played before/during a PK...the Brazilian league prompted this decision...remember that horrible missed PK by T. Henry with Arsenal?

The Zidane soft kick to the middle of the net is kinda fun...but I prefer solidly placed PKs...German style!

I prefer them blazed over the bar, or punted softly into the waiting hands of the 'keeper – English style! :p

the original game deciding penalty by Antonin Panenka in 1976 is the actual classic ;)
The first ever penalty shootout to take place in (or, more correctly, after) a professional match occurred in 1970 when the method was used to decide who would progress from a Watney Cup tie between Hull City and Manchester United – in fact, Ma and Pa Cake were present to witness it.

Needless to say we lost the shootout, helping to cement a well earned reputation for sporting ineptitude which continues to this very day.

Hey guys, I'm out here in Irdning for the week to watch the squad, and see what's going on. Was a quiet days training really with nothing happening except Upson taking a boot to the head from Defoe. Got some good pictures I can share with you if anyone is interested?
:)

The thing about the cheeky weak penalty is, if you score you look like a genius, but if you don't it's pretty embarrassing. Of course, smashing it over the bar doesn't look so good either. :D

All your keeper had to do was keep his shot down! :D Well, being on the losing end of a historical event still makes you part of history. ;)
