Was that the death of "Dunga football"? Brazilians complained that Dunga's tactics were boring.

guaranteed.

he said he has a contract and won't resign, but the pressure at home will be mounting. especially if argentina ends up winning.

with the next world cup in brazil, there is no way they won't go to a more spectacular brand of football.

i predict leonardo will be the next coach.

Brazil the home team in a World Cup? Should anyone else even bother showing up? :D Of course, if someone else won it and spoiled their party the Brazilians would probably collectively explode.

Dunga is going out for sure. He was extremely pragmatic with the press about the style of football this Brazilian team was going to play (and win with). It didn't work, the press hate him, the fans don't like this style, and the next cup is at home.

of course this will be the end of dunga playing style even if it means ruining their world cup chances... because if we are honest: while it was less spectacular their defense at this world cup was perhaps the best since years

Well, it seems Capello is set to stay on as England Manager:http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8784093.stm

Look forward to seeing the younger players, the dropping of anyone who does not perform, and a more adaptable team.

Netherlands - worrying when Brazil went straight down the middle, but wind up merchant Robben worked his magic, so long F Melo, and van Bommel kicked with confidence; use the opposition's temperament to beat them.:)

Cheers,
OW

I am not sure if we can really blame him for this performance. The own-goal? the tempers?

While they have not played beautifully in earlier games, the first half showed a lot of spirit.

oh, i am not blaming him, but this 'european' style was already contested in brazil, and only winning made it acceptable. now that they lost i think they are done with it, no matter whose the actual fault is.

and in any case, Felipe Melo was one of Dunga's men, who called him and played him after an horrible season with his club, so he has to share some of the responsability. the aggressive temperamental play also reflects a lot of how dunga himself used to play.

@ Blackadder:
last time brazil hosted they lost the final game to uruguay in front of 120,000 fans. probably considered the worst day in the history of the country :D

@ takao
i think brazil had easily the best defense in the cup.
it's the midfield and the offense that were disappointing this year (especially kaka)

@ oscilleatewildly
england are my early favourites to win the next euro cup

What the heck are you smoking? There are a sh*tload of excellent players in the Brazilian team. The first goal and the red card were both individual mistakes and they changed the course of the game completely.

5-1 hardly, if anything it should have ended at 2-2 with that first Brazilian goal being counted.

All this game showed is that these two teams are so close that even the smallest mistakes, like the goalie and the defender going after the same ball - first Dutch goal, or the defender kicking it out for a needless corner that lead to the second Dutch goal, or poor defending by needlessly placing the Brazilian forward on side - first Brazilian goal, are what can ultimately determine the game's outcome.

I know they have great players, but the only one anyone ever mentions is Kaka. Kaka this, Kaka that...One would think after listening to the announcers that Kaka is the only person on the field for Brazil.
There were huge mistakes that changed the game and threw the defense way out of sync. It happens, which is why I said that game could've ended up 5-1 at the end because Holland was attacking in the box with advantage in numbers 4 or 5 times in the last 10 minutes. I never said it should have ended 5-1, just that it could have.
Overall it was a very evenly matched game, and Holland ended up having a bit more luck this round.

I'm not sure why some people are saying Netherlands beating Brazil is a surprise or unexpected. :D

This is the best move the FA have made in years. It must have been an accident. :D

Capello will hopefully take a young, totally re-tooled England squad into Euro qualification. It's time to let go of the "golden generation".

Actually, Brazil is one of those countries where winning is not good enough. They want to win with style. Even had Dunga gone all the way, it still might not have saved him.

Ah, true! Let's hope Uruguay qualify for the next one then. :D

Agree about Kaka, he had a very, very quiet tournament - but to be fair he's been struggling with injurues.

Anyone beating Brazil is an unexpected event.

Anyone beating Brazil is an unexpected event.

I expect France to beat them every time. Which they do, for instance defeated them both times they played in the previous three World Cups, Brazil not even managing a single goal in either game.

And the USA took a 2-0 lead against Brazil in the Confederations Cup final just last year. They are far from invincible.

Edit - ouch, Fucile looks concussed. How many fingers am I holding up? Eleven..

They are far from invincible.

They don't need to be invincible to be perennial favorites though. ;)

There are certainly a lot of other excellent national sides out there, and in the case of the Dutch they are good enough to go into a match against Brazil without fear.

Uruguay started falling apart at the end of that first half too. Seems to be a psychological thing. A bit of panic creeping in finding themselves on the back foot instead of winning easily. At this rate we may have *no* South American teams in the semis, they're all freaking out under the pressure!

PS. I assume MacsRgr8 is out hitting the turps in celebration right now. :)

Lucky goal by Ghana at the worst possible moment for Uruguay. The Ghanaians came out a little disorganized in the second half when they played USA, let's see how they start this time. Uruguay will have to come out storming.

By the way, Nike's "Write the Future' ad campaign is a jinx. All players featured are now out, never even made the semi finals. :D

a question for the resident dutch/germans (i know you both love to be bundled togehter ;)) or south-africans if any are present:
do you think there is any sociopolitical connotation to either team making it deep in the tournament, from a south african perspective? are they seen in any way as the 'afrikaans' teams?

Extra time!

Good match so far. Good a day as any to be stuck on the couch with a nasty cold.
