Hmm. Perusing the fixture list it would appear that all the away trips I'm looking to make are scheduled for Saturdays, rather than inconvenient Tuesday nights.

I love it when a plan comes together.

I'm not sure if there is a HUGE backlash against McLeish or it's just media hype. For example, Danny Wilson didn't make such headlines when signing as Sheffield United's manager recently, despite being a former Wednesday player AND manager

No, it's proper hatred from the Villa fans and the Blue Nose fans are lapping it up. The Villa supporters don't just hate him because he managed City, they don't like the defensive football his teams play.

In other news, FIFA has announced that Wembley Stadium will be chosen for Champion's League final during the 2012-2013 campaign in order to honor 150 years of the FA cup.

edit 150!

Opening weekend - Saturday 13 August

Premier League

Wigan v Norwich

Hmm, a little deja vu here. Opened last season at home against a newly promoted side a got trounced 4-0. Hopefully we'll fair better this time around.
Interestingly, Wigan's next two fixtures are Swansea(A) and QPR(H), so all 3 promoted teams in the first 3 games.

I always like looking at the 3 weekend of the season to see who the relegation candidates have to play:

Chelsea v Blackburn
Everton v Newcastle
Man City v QPR, 15:00
Norwich v Aston Villa
Stoke v Bolton, 15:00
Sunderland v Man Utd
Swansea v Liverpool
Tottenham v Fulham
West Brom v Arsenal
Wigan v Wolverhampton

Obviously Blackburn and QPR probably shouldn't count on getting anything the last weekend, and Wigan vs Wolves could be a relegation showdown.

And our Scottish friends have a really early kick off...

Scottish Premier League opening fixtures (23 July unless stated):

That is early, normally we get one game in at the end of July, not two. I think the theory is to get some games in to help get the teams ready for Europe, as some of the diddy stages of the competitions now start at the end of July.

Villa has bungled their managerial search. Lerner had a reasonably good rep with the fans but he just lost that by appointing McLeish. The only way there will be a good outcome to this is if McLeish 1) gets immediate and impressive results, 2) plays attractive football, or 3) both 2 and 3. And none of those outcomes seem likely.

Can't says I like this 2011-2012 thread business, seems like change for change's sake; mind, if anyone can convert me to the idea, it's Jaffa - one free dig coupon cashed.:)

Fizzoid; congratulations - harmony on the team front?

Hello ratzzo and h00ligan.

daneoni; apologies if I sounded blunt toward the end of last season.

Bebe; a way of paying an agent?

Fixtures; Chelsea, again, and Manchester City should be happy with the games to November.

U21 - Smalling playing well, as is Jones - misjudged the speed of the ball once, but got away with it. The team seems to have the English skill of hoofing the ball up the park. Not sure about Henderson, but then I would say that.:p

And I end with the news that Mike has fixed it for you, and you, and you, and you, Demba Ba. - DB to NU

Cheers,
OW

They have posted a cool time lapse video on the Wolves web site of the Stan Cullis Stand demolition at the Molineux, which started the day after the final match of the season against Blackburn.

http://www.wolves.co.uk/page/News/0,,10307~2377446,00.html

There's even a brief glimpse of the pitch invasion at the beginning of the video. :)

That's a great video! What I found unusual is that they lifted all the turf and they are growing new grass from seed (assume the reason for this is they are moving the pitch away from the building works.) I thought the norm would be to buy turf and lay it. Never sat and watched grass grow before.

Very cool video OllyW. :D

It is unusual to see them growing the pitch in place like that - or at least I haven't heard that such is usually the case. If the stadium is going to be closed for redevelopment work though, it makes sense to start from scratch with the pitch so any issues with drainage etc. can be dealt with while construction is going on.

Looks like Newcastle got back something from Big Sam too. Pleased for him...he deserves the Premier League. A better striker than Cole form what i saw last season IMHO.

EDIT: Also, the latest from 'The Fabregas Transfer Saga' (working title); Barca have officially opened talks

Caleb Folan has earned his first MLS red card. That didn't take too long, Jaffa. ;)

USA 2-0 Jamaica

So we are through to the semifinals of the Gold Cup. It was a good result for the US against a surprisingly good Jamaica side. Bob Bradley opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation today with Donovan starting from the bench. We suffered a big blow in the match as Jose Altidore pulled a hamstring early on - he'll probably miss the rest of the tournament. This leaves us very light on strikers.

The good: Altidore's replacement, Juan Agudelo, looked very good and provided a very solid assist for Dempsey's goal, besides forcing a good save from the Jamaica keeper earlier in the match. He is still raw but very promising. Dempsey was sharper in this match, and finally got his goal, deftly rounding the keeper. We need him at his best going forward. Aston Villa's Eric Lichaj looked solid at left back.

The bad: USA is still terribly wasteful in front of goal. We create enough chances to win matches, even against tough opposition, but our finishing is criminal. Donovan and Dempsey have been a little off-form, Altidore has been OK but not great and is now out.

The other major problem is a classic USA characteristic - we start matches slowly and always end up on the back foot. This, and our profligacy in front of goal, are glaring weaknesses that better teams like Mexico and Honduras may brutally expose.

We'll know our semifinal opponent in a few hours. Either El Salvador or a grudge rematch with Panama.

EDIT: Panama beat El Salvador on pelanties, so it's a rematch on Wednesday.

...and that's the England u21's out of the tournament :p

All 3 games were absolutely awful!
The reports I read did not have much positive to say about Jordan Henderson, though Phil Jones seems to have satisfied the masses.

Very little creativity from midfield and the wing play wasn't up to scratch. The team had moments of good skill and passing, but a lot of dross. Pearce as first team manager:eek:

Lord Blackadder; Henderson didn't look good, but in the past he has kept Fabregas quiet - Dalglish v Pearce. Jones and Smalling had a good Euro; a few dodgy periods yesterday, but not at the same time - able to cover the other. They can bring the ball out and will learn to cut out the odd occasion they overrun it. Happy with the signing. Hopefully Adam won't join Jones.

I certainly rate Dalglish over Pearce, so here's hoping Kenny can get more out of Henderson. Presumably Fergie will do the same with Jones.

Jack Warner was possibly the most corrupt (and certainly the most unlikeable) SOB at FIFA. I'm sure he resigned because he knew that he was so dirty that the ethics committee, no matter how inept or corrupt it may be, could not fail to uncover an army of skeletons in his closet.

In the words of Roy Keane, he's a clown, a disgrace. Good effing riddance. It's a drop in the bucket though, and you know he'll still be running the game in his own country. :(
