Sad news relating to the Gold Cup.

Costa Rica defender Dennis Marshall died in a car accident today. The 25 year-old defender had scored an equalizer on Saturday against Honduras. A real tragedy. :(

EDIT: I checked the Costa Rican paper Al Día and it appears his girlfriend was also killed in the crash, a head-on collision with a semi truck on a mountainous road. Really awful stuff. It reminds me of the Charlie Davies accident - in that case Davies himself (barely) survived, but there was still a fatality involved and it really makes the game pale into insignificance.

One of the worst ways to go and so young too. R.I.P.

On another note. Inter will appoint Gasperini as new coach. I have no idea who he is nor what he's done but er...good one Inter?

Also Arsene has supposedly won the battle for the signature of Arshavin's replacement. Supposedly. Again...no idea who he is and what he's done but er...yay?

Well it's been a while since I have posted here,

2011 Gold Cup Final USA vs. Mexico showed two things

-US needs to have a solid formation and Coach Bradley must stop playing and testing new formations with players in crucial matches. Didn't even see him scream or get off the bench! I say were was Buddle (even though he wasnt selected) or Altidore? This was a final, not an international friendly, players were all over the place and even though Howard was exceptional during the first half, he had a bad case of butterfingers and decision making. The last goal by DosSantos was an excellent chip over him.

-Mexico is the new king of the hill in the concacaf region, with an average of 4 goals per each match Mexico will built more confidence overtime with its young squad. I really understand now why Manchester United really obtained Javier Hernandez. The kid is amazing and very young with speed and accuracy. Giovanni DosSantos is underrated but the young Tottenham player also deserves credit.

Scottish football can't get any worse.
Oh wait, it just has.

A couple of weeks ago a youngster (can't remember who or what team) got sacked from his club for re-tweeting a religious joke.

This week, a Hearts player gets convicted for "indecent behaviour towards two girls aged 12 and 14", placed on the sex offenders register but keeps his job. Punishments not fitting the crimes.

And now instead of sacking the player, Hearts have instead launched into the most incredible and not very PR-savvy rant stating there are outside influences (supposedly Mafia connections) leading their players astray. This statement is on the official club website.

What's happening with the club today is not a new thing. For almost 7 years we have been fighting to shield the club from crooks, criminals and thieves. Many of the top players at the club have felt the bitter results of the swindles that have been carried out with them on their own skin

I told you that Vladamir Romanov was good for a news story!

Lol @ Jaffa, that's how I've always seen him but I like the succinct title.

USA gold cup..well..I pretty much agree with the above. Not sure exactly what Bradley was thinking..and the entire us team should take a lesson from Hernandez in drive and conditioning. Even without scoring, that kid is a huge asset to any team..always threatening and always trying. USA passing was sloppy and ball retention was really bad.

Fuzzy, that's a disheartening disparity.

When players are convicted of various crimes, there are often calls for their clubs to relieve them of their duties – but there's a counter-argument that they should try to help the player(s) in question and attempt to rehabilitate them. That being said, there are certain offences that go beyond the pale and this is certainly one of them – for one thing, if a City player was convicted of such an offence I'd want him straight out of the door, not representing the club. And aside from the ethics, surely there's a practical problem too – if a player is on the Register, surely they can't take part in the Club's community work, and can't go near youth players under a certain age without close supervision? What about mascots?

As for Hearts, that statement is indeed bizarre but it's not the first oddball press release that they've come out with in recent years...

Speaking of bad things happening in "footie"--

Chaos erupts after River Plate relegated
Associated Press via ESPN.com
June 26, 2011

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- River Plate was relegated to the Argentine second division for the first time in its 110-year history Sunday, sparking ugly street battles between police and fans with dozens injured inside and outside River's Monumental stadium.

The drop came after a 1-1 draw with Belgrano in the second leg -- Belgrano won the first leg 2-0 -- of a demotion playoff. Mariano Pavone scored in the sixth minute for River, and Guillermo Farre tied it in the 62nd.

Violence broke a minute before the match was over. Angry fans pelted players with objects thrown from the stands, and police replied with high-powered fire hoses.

The reaction does not surprise me given how the citizens of Buenos Aries literally live and die with the fortunes of River Plate and Boca Juniors.

As for the Championship, my current thinking is that Leicester are going to be very strong next season.

They've today signed Crystal Palace's Neil Danns on a free transfer (it'll go through once his contract expires in a few days time), procured the signature of Kasper Schmeichel from Leeds, and are reported to have agreed a fee with Delexo's chums at Peterborough for Craig Mackail-Smith.

The squad they already have is pretty decent, n'all. Their current third strip even has a sash. Cripes.

In other news, according to his Twitter feed Jozy Altidore is currently learning Dutch. Could a move to the Eredivisie be on the cards for our favourite cows arse-sparing US striker?

Been out and about and away from the game for several whole days.

Re: Mexico 4-2 USA...the usual calls to remove Bob Bradley are happening, as well as ridiculous claims such as that Tim Howard is a subpar keeper. Rubbish, he is world class - but he had a bad match. The key to the result was that we don't have a dominant center back pairing, and against Mexico's attack we were always going to leave Howard in difficult positions. Bornstein had a horrible match as well. We scored two goals right off the bat and scared the hell out of them, so there are positives. Anyway, Mexico are better than us, I'm disappointed that we leaked four goals but the result is unsurprising. Maybe next time. :(

Some MLS news...Columbus spanked MLS champs Colorado 4-1 at Crew Stadium on the weekend, with controversial striker Andres Mendoza bagging a pair of goals. He is now at 7 goals, just one behind the league leaders. We all hope he is finally settling in. Columbus are finally finding some consistency, and play a cup match today against 3rd division side Richmond Kickers. Here's hoping they can keep the momentum up.

There was an odd fan incident at Crew Stadium during the match; apparently one fan in the supporters' section (the "Nordecke") complained that a member of one of the supporters' groups (La Turbina) was in "his" seat (it's general admission, even though the tickets have seat numbers). Arguments ensued, the security dealt with it with a heavy hand, and as a result La Turbina left the Nordecke en masse and took up residence in a different section of the stadium. Seeing this, most of the members of the two other supporters' groups (Crew Supporters Union and Hudson Street Hooligans) followed them in solidarity. It's turned into a minor spat between the front office and supporters' groups, though the original complainer is apparently a known (and generally despised) whiner/troublemaker.

Also in the MLS, ex-Crew midfielder and bona-fide Scotsman Adam Moffat helped get Thierry Henry sent off in a high-scoring draw between New York and Portland. Henry was unhappy with Moffat about something or other and slapped the Scot upside his head, resulting in the bearded Frenchman being shown a straight red. Henry is a legend, but I'd tip Moffat to win that battle every time.

The Eredivisie could be a very good fit for him, he needs to be playing in Europe and he's still young enough to develop into a much better player. His performances in the Gold cup were decent if unspectacular, he's still a work in progress.

Finally, I can't resist having a little dig at Mexico's expense by mentioning that eight members of national squad have just been fined and sent home from the squad after having prostitutes in their hotel rooms.

Meanwhile, Hearts have suspended Craig Thomson.

It's a shame they only did so after apparently bowing to public opinion (and that of their sponsors) rather than of their own violation.

Exactly, Hearts have perhaps been naive and come out fighting to defend one of their own when in fact the should have hung him out to dry. I can see their point that they think there are more sinister things at work but this was the wrong issue to do it with.

Also I didn't appreciate what football teams did for their local communities until St Mirren started coming to my lad's school. A couple of guys who aren't in the first team come to his school every week and give football coaching for an hour. Thomson can't do things like that anymore and so is technically in breech of his contract. I'm not going the Daily Mail route of calling to nail his scrotum to a tree and castrate him, hopefully the lad has seen the error of his ways, is dealing with the consequences and has the right to ply his trade, but he would be better seeking employment elsewhere.

Pah, old hat. Scotland were doing that back in 1974 with Big Helga!

By the way Jaffa, word on the street is that AZ Alkmaar are looking to sign Jozy. Hopefully his hamstring heals up so he can get involved in the Europa League matches.

That was an incredible statement from the club. It sounded surreal.

Would that be the only time seven Scotsman ever scored in an international? :D

Indeed! In these days of super-injunctions, it's nice to hark back to the days when footballers could properly mis-behave and nobody would care!

All quiet up here, the most interesting signing Rangers have made so far is off the pitch with Gordon Smith as 'director of football' type. While Gordon is an ex-Rangers player he's not known for legend status, and more well known as being a pundit on the radio and former chief of the SFA. He's a shrewd character, knows how to handle the media very well, having him on board will allow McCoist to concentrate on the coaching and less on the media.

And speaking of legends, poster seen at farewell match for Walter Smith.

Interesting. He's struggled to make an impact wherever he's gone in Europe to date – his strike rate is something like a goal every ten games – but hopefully he can up his game if this move goes through.

Meanwhile, we all know that England has The Best League In The World™ but it turns out that our brave international footballers are amongst the world's finest too. In the newly released FIFA rankings, England are rated as the fourth best team in the world – only the Dutch, Germans and World Cup-winning Spanish manage to rank higher than our plucky lads.

No, really – click the link. It's not a wind up or anything.

Seriously.

Scotland come in 61st by the way, Fuzzy. You'll have to try harder next time, or something.

He has the tools, but he needs to improve his decision-making. Like most American players, he has to try and play catch-up with his technical game. More importantly, he needs to stop bouncing around and find a club in a decent league where he will get playing time.

Always good for a laugh, that list. I remember when the USA was ranked 4th just before the 2006 World Cup.

I remember Gordon Smith for his kindness; letting Gary Bailey sit on the ball - unlike that rotten Alan Sunderland.:)

Cheers,

Excuse me, but I think you'll find we've moved up 5 places (as we couldn't get any worse)

Similar issues currently going on in other sports about the official world rankings. Everybody knows they aren't perfect, but nobody has a better system. At least Spain are #1 by winning two of the last majors. Let's have a look at the teams above us... Gabon, Albania, Panama, Peru, Iran, Burkina Faso. I reakon we're good for at least number 49!

Congratulations England on the #4 spot, that means you should be good for going out at the semi-finals on penalties.

I did hear that he was due to be the very public face of a previous launch, but news of him shagging someone else's lass behind his wife's back broke a few days before the unveiling. Umbro hurriedly had to come up with an alternative launch, which if I remember rightly revolved around the concept sketches for the new polyester rag.

Sorry, did I say shagging someone else's lass behind his wife's back? I meant to say alleged indiscretions, rather than shagging someone else's lass behind his wife's back. Yes.

Oh, and we've signed Jack Hobbs permanently after a promising loan spell last season. This is good news.

The rankings are pretty silly, and even the supposedly more accurate Elo rankings aren't really much different (they have England at #6, USA at #28 and Scotland at #45)

Come to think of it, I don't remember the last time USA and Scotland met. That would be fun.

I think it's a sign that I'm getting older when I can't recall where I've put something I was using 10 minutes ago but can remember both of those FA Cup final last minute dramas.

They say the long-term memory is last to go...at least this way you can forget Wolves' bad performances quickly. ;)

EBLJT is (allegedly) the worst person one could possibly choose for any such PR event. Why is this man even considered for this any more? Also. he has a face that looks as if it's been chewed. I say they just keep using Becks to model the new shirt. Give him a cap for each event. :D

That's not much help, we got relegated from the First Division to the Fourth Division in consecutive seasons in 1984/5/6, had half of the stadium condemned then went bankrupt.

Battling relegation in the Premier League is a luxury compared to that! :D
