The Mancini sacking is not surprising. Man City's ownership showed a good deal of patience with him (by modern standards), and he did deliver a league title. I suspect that this season's brief required that he win some silverware, and the FA Cup would possibly have saved his job. City want to get down to the business to winning titles regularly, and they still have the squad to do it.

Dempsey with a good day for Spurs, Coutinho and Sturridge continue to impress for Liverpool.

Good to see Steve Bruce getting back into the habit of handling the Premier League trophy ahead of our historic title win next season.

Ladbrokes have us at 10,000/1 to be champions in 2013-14, so I reckon a tenner on a cert like that represents excellent value.

Fingers crossed to see Ajax's finest playing for Dortmund next season.

Isn't it a bit strange to have the FA final during a regular league gameweek? It's a rather prestigious cup for you at all, isn't it?

PEC Zwolle 4 vs ADO Den Haag 2
This was a open game of football, played by two teams in the middle table. PEC took their chances.
All in all, I reckon a final placing of 11th is pretty decent for Zwolle. Hopefully they can use it as a platform.

By the way, Happybunny, any update on the Fair Play situation? Are Zwolle still placed for a potential European spot?

It's been messed around with in recent years unfortunately, the days of a traditional 3pm Saturday kick off after the League season has ended seem to be behind us I'm afraid.

That said, part of the reason this time at least is that Wembley is needed for the Champions League final after the end of the regular season and there are rules about the host stadium not being used for other matches for a spell either side of the UEFA showpiece. As it's Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund we'll just blame you Germans. ;) :D

Sorry to inform you Jaffa Cake, but PEC will not be taking a place in Europe.

Finland Norway and Sweden will all supply the extra places in the Europa League via Fair Play.:(

Meanwhile, Fergie confirms that Rooney has put a transfer request in – but says they've refused it. And speaking of strikers, talk tonight that Falcao has greed terms to move to a newly promoted club. Bizarrely though it's Monaco and not Hull City.

I wonder how things will work out with Monaco's tax situation.

If true its a big blow to Chelsea (and maybe City). I guess he doesn't want to deal with the pressures of the EPL nor the British Weather. Why not go live in the French Riviera and earn a massive paycheck whilst playing laid back football instead.

His family probably also had a massive say in the matter.

that is where i'm headed... :D

Oh MLS is still going on? I thought I was watching high school soccer but then I realized it was the Chicago Fire continuing to suck. Fire 0 - 1 Union.

Haven't seen one MLS game in my entire life, so can't comment upon that, but is Arne Friedrich still playing for Chicago?

He's still on the team but has been out after surgery. Hopefully he comes back soon, the defense needs him.

Columbus lost again this week. We are playing reasonably well but not getting results. I think the manager has to take a large portion of the blame. Warzycha has always taken a rather elementary, inflexible approach to the game and while he has improved I don't think he a is a championship-quality manager - even though I think we just might have a championship-quality squad.

Warzycha favors a 4-5-1 but we have two good strikers in Oduro and Arrieta. He should play them together in the middle.

Despite their best efforts, Newcastle won yesterday.

I was bit nervous after giving up the early penalty. I was even more so when our keeper, Rob Elliot, was sent off leading 2-1.

Hopefully 41 pts will be enough to secure PL football next year. We'll know for sure after the Wigan/Arsenal match today.

After two consecutive relegations and four managers, it can't get any worse for us can it?

Steve McClaren in the frame for Wolves job

McLaren is a figure of ridicule these days, but he actually seems a decent manager. You could do worse - Megson or McLeish for example.

My understanding is you're safe. But what you really need for next season is a nice, big, traditional Number 9. Liverpool have just the thing, and while he's expensive, it's been proven that he scores lots of goals in black & white striped shirts. I hear he's on the market too. ;)

Oh yes it can.

You could get 'Arry.:p

I agree he was given totally unrealistic goals at FC Twente, in his first season 2008/09 he he got Twente to the Beker Final they lost to Hereenveen. The next season 2009/10 he got Twente their first Eredivisie Title in their history. In the season 2010/11 he got them to the final of the Beker and this time they won it. He did this with a very small group of players, a shoe string budget.
The fans and the directors wanted success but without willing to pay for it.

Rules; is it possible to decline a penalty? If not, bring the option in following the experiences of Brentford, Hull City, and Leicester City.

Research suggests a better than 60% chance of converting penalties even in "sudden death" situations. When it's the first penalty kick of the game that number rises to over 80%. So, I think you'd be pretty foolish to decline a penalty kick unless you are managing a team of absolute duffers.

But I think recent experience shows that you'd better make sure that you leave adequate defensive cover behind in case of a counterattack after a save/rebound.

Who would've thought Almunia would make two massive saves. Game of his career that.

Also brilliant first touch from the winger who drove the counter attack. Messi/Ronaldo-esque.

EDIT: On another note; Mancini has been canned. At least he can use the £28m severance package to wipe his tears.

EDIT2: PSG have turned down Madrid's advances for Ancelotti.

While I'm all for giving managers time, I can't say I'm surprised, or bothered by Mancini's sacking.

He seemingly spent boat loads of cash on a team that could only win the title one season, and do nothing after that, criticised his superiors by blaming them for City winning anything, because they wouldn't let him spend another boat load of cash, and has seemingly fallen out with just about every player.

2011-12 wasn't a good season to win a trophy.

Premier League - Mancini sacked.
FA Cup & Champions League - di Matteo sacked.
League Cup - Dalglish sacked.
Championship - McDermott sacked.

Clearly that's why John Sheridan resigned from Chesterfield after winning the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last season, he could see which way the wind was blowing. ;)
