Group D(eath): Real Madrid, Manchester City, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund.

Never say never, but that makes last years CL performance even worse (yes, that's possible)...and the BVB the title favorite within the Bundesliga again ?!

have to check the odds!

Once again, Man Utd find themselves in arguably the weakest group with Man City in the toughest.

Philadelphia 1-2 Columbus

A wild night in Philly last night and once again Frederico Higuain produced magic for the Crew. With the score tied at 1 and the Crew down to 10 men in the 5th minute of five minutres of stoppage time, our new hero slotted a wonderful through-ball behind the Philly defense to assist on the winner. Our third-string keeper Matt Lampson also made a few key saves to keep us in the hunt for a win.

That's three wins on the bounce now, and 8 goals in the last three matches, most of which Higuain had a hand in. The playoffs suddenly seem a real possiblity now.

So, with deadline day looming, will Liverpool sell Carroll or won't they?

Well, I seem to recall Rogers saying he wants three strikers, and we just signed teenager Samid Yesil from Bayer Leverkusen...that gives us four strikers.

I know Newcastle want Carroll but it would be very embarrassing for Liverpool to send him back there. But in the end, if Rogers does not want him he should go.

With Berbatov possibly going to Fulham that sounds like Dempsey may be moved on, though Jol still claims nobody has shown interest in him.

that actually begs the question, when all the BVB players will transfer to other clubs to be (more) successful on an international level.
On paper it looks like another fourth place in the group stage for Dortmund, but then again, who thought that Manchester United ended up playing Europa League last season ;)

Wow, that came unexpected. He's said to be one very talented player. Is it on loan?

I wouldn't write them off either. This season will be completely different than the last, but chances are unfortunately really high that they won't even get into EuroLeague. Again.

I believe it's permanent.

The current scuttlebut is that Andy Carroll will be going on loan to West Ham. The problem with this is that we aren't making any money from it because we've dropped our demand that the deal include a buyout - though presumably West Ham are paying at least some of his wages. Still, if it makes room for useful signings I'm all for it.

Liverpool are starting 18 year-old striker Adam Morgan against Hearts tonight, alongside Suarez.

People drastically underrated Benfica and FC Basel last season. Don't know that Braga and Galatasaray are up to that standard, nor will United take the group stage for granted this time.

I did happen to watch the second leg of Udinese vs Braga and didn't see much to impress me about Braga, except they took their penalties in the shootout really well and their keeper liked to play with the ball at his feet a lot and could pick a pass into midfield pretty well.

And so Liverpool have squeezed past Hearts and into the next round of the Europa League. Hardly anything to get excited about in terms of Liverpool's performance. Despite the shuffling of the team we were headed for a boring 0-0 until Reina ballsed up a routine save.

And now for transfer deadline day madness...I wonder if there will be any big last-minute signings?

Looks like Dempsey is set to join Villa not Sunderland. Their bid was accepted by Fulham. No matter how you spin it thats a downgrade to his career. He must loathe Liverpool right now for falsely getting his hopes up.

Well, the BBC is currently reporting:

Van der Vaart set for Hamburg move
Fulham accept bid from Villa for Dempsey
Liverpool make bid for Sturridge on loan
Bolton sign Spearing from Liverpool
Reds offload Carroll to West Ham

Seems Liverpool wanted a deal for Dempsey with Henderson or Adam, but it fell through.

Dempsey to Villa though? Clearly someone misunderstood when he said he wanted Champions League football as he may have actually said "Championship football" ;)

What does that mean? Chelsea needs at least a second striker..Hulk? Schürrle seems somehow unrealistic but who knows.

Reds offload Carroll to West Ham
I'm sure the Hammers fans who bemoan Allardyce's side for not 'playing the West Ham way' are positively salivating at the prospect of seeing long ball after long ball pumped upfield to Carroll. Heh. :D

As for Dempsey, Aston Villa looks like a very odd move but I guess his bridges at Fulham have been burnt over the last couple of weeks. I certainly wouldn't consider it a step upwards the shape Villa are in at the moment.

Sky Sports saying Dempsey rejected Villa...wants to move up norf!

It also looks like Bendtner will be offloaded to Juve for the season. Apparently he asked for Del Piero's shirt but was promptly smacked in the face

Finally, why are we moving for Michael Essien? personally i don't want him. A 29yr old who is a shadow of his former self.

BBC reporting: "As things stand, it is unlikely there will be any major arrivals at Arsenal before the transfer deadline."

Predictably. I had a feeling Wenger wouldn't really sign additional players.

If I was twietee, I'd be most offended that you pointed me towards a listing for an XL-sized shirt. :p ;)

you mean daneoni, right? :p

edit: I believe Bendtner should get XXL

by the way, it ripped apart because it was cheap crap..but still the only franchise shirt I ever wore...that is if anyone has an Ajax Amsterdam Aaron Winter shirt for sale, I'd be interested (Inter would do as well)!

Sinclair has signed for City. To me thats a bad move for him and you know he only went there out of vanity (read money). He's not exactly going to walk into City's midfield, which means benchwarmer. But hey, as long as the ££££ keeps coming.

Funny how Llorente and Hulk are being priced out of a move to other clubs. You know your price:quality valuation doesn't have parity when you start turning down a £40m move, and even Abramovich turns up his nose at you.(Hulk)

Llorente is the more puzzling one because he will walk out of Bilbao for free next summer. Yet they're insisting on a £29m fee.
