Pa Jans is around about as old as I feel at the moment, having read the news this morning that Michael Owen is to retire at the end of the season. It's easy to scoff at how his career progressed in its final few years, but in his younger fitter days he was a very fine player. Oh but for a pair of sturdy hamstrings.

I wish I'd been able to see him play properly! I was too young to remember really.

I remember standing in the pub watching him score against Argentina back in '98. Amazing scenes.

But not as amazing as the scenes at Ewood Park today, I'll wager – word is that Venkys have sacked another manager. Michael Appleton was there just 67 days, but at least he fared better than his predecessor Henning Berg who could only chalk up 57.

Mental.

EDIT: Confirmed.

I remember his hattrick against Germany in 2001 as well. Sadly, that may have been the highlight of his career

Just to let you know I have applied for a job as I hear Stoke City are now looking for somebody to keep their bench warm. :p

And thanks to Jaffa for the kind message on Sunday night, yes my lads team St Mirren have won their first trophy in 27 years. We were at the semi but not at the final, just as well as Hearts should have been 4-0 up at half time I don't think I could have taken it! Now to secure our spot in the league.

He has the facial expression of Marco Van Basten.

Fuzzy, good luck with your application. Please let me know what's happening with Bego, will ya?!

Congrats on the silverware, I think Scottish football needs some new heroes outside the Old Firm...and you had the pleasure of knocking Celtic out to boot. :D

Don't want to bother you guys with a German link - but Eric Abidal is about to have his comeback soon. He and his transplanted new liver. Welcome home, Eric! :)

Michael Owen sadly joins the legions of other players which in their younger years were known for their speed and then once they aren't 22 anymore, their other football qualities are sometimes underdeveloped

few speedy players managed the transition truly great...
Pippo Inzaghi comes to mind for example

That's good news about Abidal, twietee!

It's always sad to see a great player decline. Although, in the case of English players that decline seems to set in shortly after the initial hype. :D

Don't worry, Accrington Stanley fans! Franny Jeffers will save you!
That's former England international Franny Jeffers, don't forget – and he can boast a goal-a-game average for the national team. ;)

Speaking of broken hands.. Eintracht Frankfurts very talented goalie Trapp just broke his hand. During the shooting of a commercial for the German national team. Guess the club isn't amused.

Things have gotten rocky in the USA camp, with Jurgen Klinsmann having benched our best defender, Carlos Bocanegra, for our key 2-1 loss to Honduras back in February. I think it is very possible that wa will fail to qualify for the World Cup. Rumors have it that the dressing room is not happy with Klinsmann. Only a dramatic improvement in form will get us out of this mess, and with Landon Donovan in an existential funk and not playing at all, Bocanegra inexplicably benched and Dempsey not match fit I am very, very worried. We have zero chance of bringing any points back from Mexico on March 26, so we can't afford to lose any other games now. I'm not sure why Klinsmann is benching Bocanegra, but I think it is a mistake. Bocanagra may be old, but he his still good and he is unquestionably looked to as a leader and organizer on the pitch. Perhaps he has clashed with Klinsmann?

Balanced against that, Klinsmann was brought in to take the program to a new level, and most of our best players are aging. A new generation will have to be groomed and worked into the team. That means there will be some big bumps in the road. Firing Klinsmann could set us back years, even if he fails to qualify us for the World Cup.

But if we don't make it to the world cup Klinsmann is history for sure. I like a lot of the things he has said and done, but it's as simple as that. He won't survive a failure to qualify.

Worryingly, players have begun to quote Phillipp Lahm's book, or echo his criticisms with their own....

Rio Ferdinand said:
Haters are gonna hate...

Ferdinand off to a training and punditry regimen in Qatar, a country that continuously reminds us of the corruption money has brought to the game...

Suarez already essentially putting himself up for sale.

I don't think he'll leave during the summer, but if we fail to finish in the top four next season (and I consider that very likely), he will probably go. His value has increased and he will be targeted by an increasing number of clubs in the Champions League.

Liverpool do not have the resources to compete with Man Utd, Chelsea or Man City. Spurs, Arsenal and Everton are our real competitors - we all want the fourth spot because the top three spots are locked in for the foreseeable future.

I have a feeling that this will happen, players at the top now days want silverware. Money that they already have, in bucket fulls. Just look at RvP.

I don't want him to leave, but when the time comes we should be able to sell him for a good profit and buy an adequate replacement with the money.

There is a thing in football that only Scotland really 'get' or truly understand. That's the phrase "mathematically possible". Standard practice is to play crap until there isn't much hope of qualifying but it's still mathematically possible, quality of play then improves just enough to give you hope that we might do it, then we fall at the last hurdle.

It is currently mathematically possible that Scotland can still quality for WC Brazil Euro2014, but a big part of me just hopes that the wounded animal is just shot in the head tonight by Wales and buried in a shallow grave. That's the spirit.
