Following our 1-0 win away at wintry Turf Moor last night, if the Bluebird-favouring DAC47 can hear a panting sound that'll be me breathing down his neck. :p

I'm sorry, that didn't sound half as creepy and weird in my head.

It's alright Jaffa - you must be simply giddy at the thought of getting promoted to the Best League in the World™. :D

EDIT: I forgot to mention it earlier but Columbus fell 2-1 away against Vancouver this weekend. We didn't play terribly but a draw should have been possible. Some are blaming the plastic pitch, others the manager. Unrest against Robert Warzycha is now endemic amongst most serious fans but the club seems to be 100% behind their manager - due, rumors allege, to a complete lack of interest in change from the ownership. He's been with us since 2009 and our finishing positions in the league are are slowly declining. We do have a very good squad this year I think, so I'm hoping to see that trend revers - though I'm not sure it can under Warzycha. His dedication to the club is unquestionable, but his tactics can be a bit agricultural.

Here is my occasional report of Women's international football ;)

While the matches I have seen (3 with Germany, against Japan, Denmark and Norway - group A and 3 with Sweden against China, Sweden, Iceland - group B.), the tournament has been a bit disappointing, i.e. nothing you would be sorry to have missed it. Maybe with the exception of Sweden vs USA.

Group A:
If I would use the word boring, I would assign that to group A. Results were very close. The commentators said that women teams have now more caught up with one another.

I had the impression Japan was just bored themselves and unwilling to invest something not showing their pacing style and superb saveness with passes, they showed in the great world cup finale 2011 against USA. OK, they played against Germany that is attack oriented - I do not know, if it is because there are so many new, young players and so much exchanges during matches and the coach is testing recently - but, if Japan can win against USA, the world no.1, I would not expect the match to be centered in the mid-field and looking slow. Japan being one of the rare teams not trying out new players and having almost the team they had during the last two years. It ended in 2:1 (Germany winning).

Denmark, not a real competition for Germany normally managed a 0:0. I already said earlier that this was a slower, boring match (with some badly shot passes by Germany and less of an impression of sovereignty.

Norway, with a new old coach. A coach that had won the Euro Cup title with Norway in 1995 and after that trained Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, although I do not understand why they (commentators) are always making these relations to a different time. Especially in women's football, where from the two years I do watch it now, I have the impression, that they are still on their way of an evolution, though maybe faster (20 years) compared to men's football.
Norway was a complete "test-team" for the coach it seemed, it was two different teams that were used for two of the matches. But efficiently enough, while always a team that gets in the k.o.-phases of big tournaments, you won't expect them to be there in the end - but, tada!, they played 2:0!!! against Japan, a 0:0 against Denmark, which better describes both teams and a 0:2 against Germany. They did good defense jobs, while looking sometimes insecure, but gaining confidence in the second half. It was the (if this can be said) most interesting match of group A. Giving Germany's players the chance to show more technique (or should I say "to show off") and showing better passing than in the other two matches, which was not very effective given the number of chances.

Group winner: Germany (7 points, with low engagement or profession or lack of experience players)
2nd: Norway (4 points, 2 worse than Mexico - group C - and 1 worse than Sweden, but they had the better goal-to-goal relation)

Group B:

Let me recall, if I remember right...

China vs Sweden, was an equal game, with china looking unexpectedly good. result 1:1, will maybe be interesting to see how China looks in future tournaments, though I find their style not really attractive/entertaining, looks more like "socialist state gymnastics" (forgive me). Sweden making their goal from a corner. Thunebro (outer left wing defender) cicking the ball about 5m to another player, getting it back, dancing fourth and back, turning around and shooting from a distance of perhaps 18-20m from the goal (about 45° from the left end line). China lost 0:5 against USA, won 1:0 against Iceland.

Iceland vs Sweden
shooting gallery for Sweden, but Iceland's goalkeeper did a good job minimising the loss to "only" 6 goals for Sweden. Iceland got a lucky goal near the end. 1:6 ending result. It is interesting to add that Iceland lost 3:0 against the USA "B"-team.

USA vs Sweden
as I said the most attractive match (though still not as nice as the olympia or world cup matches). USA with Wambach getting back from an injury which was why she was not used in the other two matches. US goal keeper Hope Solo is in pause for 4 month because of an injured hand. The new goal keeper did a good job though, while you would like to admit that of course the whole team added to that impression, getting in Sweden's way.
Sweden also had its second goalkeeper, who replaced the goal keeper Lindahl, who I found to be playing to risky (going before the 16m line a lot and making a lot of the Olympia goals of other teams possible, though one could have seen that in the world cup, too). That said, I wonder if running before the 16m line is a "special feature" ;) of Swedish goal keepers. She did it far less and even was successful doing this against China, she was back in the box just about the right time to catch it, when it got fired back directly.
The one swedish goal was a long ball from near the center circle from a follow up shot of the US goalkeepers defending action in the 4th minute. (The Swedish coach, who was the former US coach, was shaking her head in the last 10minutes, smiling, because both teams created a lot of chances)
The match went fourth and back to both sides. The US made their goal of a standard per head by Alex Morgan.
The US now has the former Coach of the Australian team. I do not know, if this is a disadvantage, but it might be an advantage that the swedish coach had trained the US for so long until recently (half a year).
Sweden by the way had to win this to get to the finale and lost it. The US needed a draw. end result 1:1

Finale: USA vs Germany (since the Swedish encounter was faster and given the two friendlies against Germany, I hope for a fast match here).
3rd place: Sweden vs Norway. (a bit of a surprise)
--> both matches Wednesday.

Group C (Mexico -covered in Group A comparison-wise, Hungary, Wales and Portugal):
couldn't see one match.

Sorry for that long post!

I didn't realize that the Algarve Cup started back in 1994. Alex Morgan is a really exciting player for USA; she's fast, intelligent and seems to have a good shot as well.

Jordi Alba is a beast.

Barca get the job done in the end by beating a naive Milan 4-0.

Shalke dumped out too by Galatasaray 3-4.

Might be a Madrid vs Barca final after all.

It's going to be any two of Barca, Bayern or Real in the end. I'd be shocked if anyone else muscled into the final.

I'm still backing Barca as champions but either of the other two would be worthy winners based on current form - unlike Chelsea who absolutely stole it last season. Mourinho is going to try his damnedest to win it again.

I feel sorry for Arsenal in advance. I just have a gut feeling that they are going to get mauled.

From Post #2151First off I know it's nowhere like the same class but Ajax was eliminated last night by Steaua Boekarest 2-2 regular time 4-2 on penalties. They also held a two goal league, Barcelona are not out of it, it will be very difficult but not impossible. It should also be a fantastic game to watch.

I didn't even dream that the match was going to be so good.:D

A great advertisement for attacking football.:D

Hey and both mangers showed up for the press conference, as per the rules.

:D

The accepted wisdom seems to be that dropping Fabregas in favor of Villa was a factor in Barca's improvement. Messi's second goal was offside but I really don't think it changed the game too much, Barca dominated the proceedings. Milan created enough chances to have made it very interesting but they couldn't finish them.

Apparently Ferdinand is going to escape a ban for scything Torres down due to insufficient evidence.

So I suppose everyone's heard that McDermott's been sacked. A victim of his own success really, if we hadn't been promoted then I'm sure he'd still be in a job.

I'd like either Adkins or Di Matteo... Please not the fascist Di Canio!

Impressive halftime result from Arsenal. They really needed a second goal in the first half to level things, but they are making it interesting. I still feel like it will be impossible to prevent Bayern from scoring, even if Arsenal do get the two goals they need to go through as it stands right now.

Any guesses who their guest in the studio was? :D

:D Poor Phil. Does he still do punditry these days?

?

Really? Haven't seen one decent chance for Munich. Hope Arsenal can score a second goal quick to make it finally a tense game.

He does a bit inbetween trips to the post office with an armful of CVs, mainly on BBC radio these days.

It would be quite the twist if Adkins were to be appointed and succeeded in keeping Reading up at the expense of Southampton...

Well at least they tried...

But no RVP or Wilshere to put the nail in the coffin. Ref didn't help either nor did the cast of Bayern Players who were great Oscar nominees on the night.

Still, we beat an admittedly subpar Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Allianz Arena. We'll have to settle for just that.

Pressure lifted off Wenger once again...for now. Made some big calls today, benched Vermaelen and didn't even allow Szczesny to make the trip. Mertesacker also handed command of the defence. All of which seemed to have paid off. Hopefully he sticks with the same squad for the Swansea game.

But reality is all the top EPL teams must now look at themselves and raise their level next season.

Arteta is now an official Van-Bommel Trophy nominee after that game .. how many fouls did he make without getting booked ? a dozen ?

Arsenal at least show that they actually can defend for once and force Bayern to mostly long shots while being brutally effective on the attack (3 chances, 2 goals)

Robben isn't as strong on the left as he used to .. nearly all his dangerous scenes were through the right side ... where Müller actually showed why he is the current number 1 on that position in their squad

I'm not sure if the level of the EPL is sinking or the level of the top European leagues are rising, but for a neutral viewer it's great football.:D
Arsenal did as good as they could.

I always find that van Bommel is more clumsy, than a mean and dangerous player.
Robben is a player who's best days are behind him, he's been a diving piece of scum, since his first season with PSV back in 2002. Hopefully with his injury problems he will soon stop playing. :D

He should have applied for the Toronto FC job, he would only have had to beat out Ryan Nelsen. But overnight postage to Canada is probably rather spendy.

It the best worst result you could have hoped for. I really didn't expect Arsenal to win, but Bayern could afford to lose and apparently they were happy to do the bare minimum required for qualification. They will need to play better than that in their next match, much better.

Credit to Arsenal for stepping up and beating Bayern in their own ground.

Sad news, but could it really be a case of Accrington Stanley, who're they?

A week of Rooney's wages could probably keep them going for years... :(

(yesterday)
and Morgan strikes again...
and again!

With her two first chances (two more came later) she got the 2:0 that stayed till the end and made the USA the winner of this Algarve Cup Final. Breaking Germany's series of 22 won matches (some draws under the last matches), since late 2011.

Sadly, to admit that the two goals resulted from one enormous goalkeeper's fault and another not enormous but still bad fault combinaton of inner defender and goalkeeper (maybe a misunderstanding between them, but... hm). Nonetheless you could see Morgan having a good technique (that wasn't really needed to do at least one of the goals).
There were also several yellows that were not given, which made the referee look a bit bad (more by the US team and I am not biased on that I claim)

Germany played more with (sometimes nice) ideas and sometimes way to complicated, creating a big amount of chances, being not effective. The US did play more directly, but not to say without showing their class. If I recall right there was a fifth chance by Shannon Box, so 2 out of 5, not bad.
What added up to it was, that two German players decided two rather let themselves fall in front of the box and speculating on a foul, where it looked easy to keep standing and scoring regular. Extremely stupid, if you know the referee is stingy with yellows. Well, on the other hand, lucky that they did not get a card for acting.

I wonder, if this tournament was used as a testing field of some teams purposely, since there were a lot of teams that were changing a lot and playing with differing on-the-field starting squad. While the German coach is testing a lot for a while now anyway, I wonder, if she was really thinking it would be wise to take the second goalkeeper against the best team of the world, when you have a big amount of regulars and older field players being injured and your best defense player (who actually is said to be guiding the others, what is otherwise done by the first goalkeeper a lot), is not available, too. This with the first goalkeeper being totally fit and healthy.

On the match for the 3rd place:
Sweden being clearly the better team, playing 2:1 against Norway, until Norway shot the draw in the last 6 seconds of the additional time. Which then lead to the penalties directly.
Now imagine Sweden's (not regular) goalkeeper, having got this one in the box just a wink of an eye ago and now having to have the nerves for penalties.
It ended Norway winning 5:4, though the scenario was, that the swedish keeper kept a ball, which did not give more confidence (giving her reaction, I am not getting psychological here...), Norway being one point behind, but a Swedish player then missed and so it was open again.

Norway had just three real chances. Now you can say, that they are very effective and that this is a virtue, too, but from their playing you would agree that they were clearly the worse team.
While the match itself was not as exciting as the USA vs Germany match, the penalty was then :)

It's funny, while missing so many chances - minus those were Ego-Robben decided to do it on his own - Bayern still has their typical luck. But still, I'd say well done Arsenal (or am I to fatous to have thought they could at least get their third goal?).

In other news, Romanian club owned by outrageously-bigoted tycoon is beaten by English club owned by scary Russian oligarch. Torres scores, gets kicked in the face and misses penalty. Oh, and Brave John Terry scored too. I mean during the game. Er, by putting the ball in the let. Literally.

I almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about, eh? I like this punditing thingy...Alan Shearer and Alexi Lalas, look out! :D

Nuri Sahin seems relieved to have left Anfield

Meanwhile the UCL quater-finals draw are quite boring.

Malaga v Borussia Dortmund

Real Madrid v Galatasaray

Paris St-Germain v Barcelona

Bayern Munich v Juventus

Ferdinandgate rolls on...now he's been picked by Roy but Ferg might stick it to him by not releasing his player. England have a real problem at center back right now. Lots of players available but pretty much all of them off-form.

A Bale-less Spurs got absolutely shellacked by Inter but squeaked through.

Nuri Sahin seems relieved to have left Anfield

The feeling is mutual. He's obviously a talented player but he has an attitude problem. Rogers played him out of his preferred position and it put him in a funk. It was a low-risk situation for both parties so it was worth shot and no harm done really.

Meanwhile the UCL quater-finals draw are quite boring.

Quite lame. Bayern - Juventus is the only one that seems to promise anything.
