LvG couldn't resist stroking his own ego at the last, claiming that he taught Argentina's keeper (who played under him at AZ) how to save penalties. Right, Louis. right.

So, apparently the only person who can beat Louis van Gaal is....Louis van Gaal.
It's true, though. Romero had never heard of a 'penalty kick' until he moved to Holland. I don't think that the Argentinian language even has a word for 'penalty'. Hell, I'm not even sure that the Argentinians have a language.

On to more important matters...

Sanchez has his medical today, supposedly. To which we will add Debuchy, Khedira, Schneiderlin, one or both Benders, Draxler, and Rojo.

I'd swap them all for Fab and a striker.

Draxler and Rojo won't happen. Draxler is raw, costs too much and wants to stay in Shalke. Rojo wants to go to Monaco for tax-free money.

Sanchez for Fabrags isn't really a bad trade is it? Considering Arsenal already have like 7 midfielders. They lacked pace last season once Walcott got injured and became predictable.

They also need a midfield anchor with energy to play alongside Ramsey (Arteta isn't cutting it for them anymore), so Khedira/Bender/Schneiderlin is another appropriate move i would think.

I do agree that they still need a striker though.

Maybe they'll get Benzema if the Falcao rumours are true. But i read this morning that Liverpool are already hunting him. So they might be forced to settle for Remy.

No surprise (to me at least) that Suarez's appeal against his ban has been turned down

What's interesting is that the appeal was on the grounds
"excessive decision" for which "there was not enough evidence".

Erm, ok then. So bite marks on Chiellini's shoulder, Suarez holding his gnashers and an event witnessed by millions which he later apologised for isn't enough?

What's also funny is that the ban is "from all football-related activities" yet Fifa have been (seemingly) unable to quantify just what that means

Edit:

Also, Van Gaal's having a moan

If he thinks it's unfair, he should have made sure his team beat Argentina then! :p

Lovely. I'm very partial to a Fab, but have no recollection of the Striker. Looks very 70s to me. Is the photo from your personal collection?

I was being slightly facetious. I resurrected Draxler because there are ridiculous rumours that Spurs are trying to buy him; I completely made up the Rojo story because I think he's been fantastic during this tournament, but I suspect that in the cold light of day – or a freezing Wednesday night in Stoke – he's not a significant upgrade on Gibbs.

Flamini's over the hill, Arteta's past his best and is too physically slight, Diaby is dead. An injection of German (or German-sounding) muscle as a proper DM would be most welcome. I know very little about Lars B, but I'd be very happy with Schneiderlin. Khedira looks a bit too offensively minded and fancy dan for my liking, although I'm sure that The Big Ö would love to play with him again.

Welcome home, Arjen!

...

Kuyt's penalty was excellent again. He made as if to go to the left as he did against Costa Rica, and then stroked the ball leisurely to the right.

...

There was something about research showing the best taker should go 4th. Misremembered?

Sanchez walks out at Arsenal to:

East Germany had their day. If only...

I wonder what the 3rd place playoff will be like...will the Brazilians muster a strong performance as a too-little, too-late face-saving gesture, or will they simply be drained? Will the Dutch even show up? Perhaps they are less glum than their manager.

It's a game that traditionally has a few goals in it, maybe Fred will score a hat trick. :D

Apparently Evra's wife is sick of Manchester, and he's off to Rome.

The lack of evidence argument sounds ridiculous. I imagine the video evidence would hold up in court if this were a criminal case, how much more do you need? Whether the punishment was excessive could be argued ad infinitum, I but I don't really care anymore.

As for the ban from "all football-related activities"...terrible language, either incredibly broad or unhelpfully vague. Does that mean he can't be in any way involved with any sponsors or charities? Since he derives his fame from football, wouldn't any celebrity appearance be ultimately 'football related'? I don't really care either way, but it does seem to be poorly written. They're letting him transfer regardless, so it's a contradictory set of punishments.

I read that Robben said he doesn't care for the third place match and he wants the FIFA to make away with this stupid match and that in the end one (NED) will go home with two losses, while the whole tournament was actually extremely good.

Van Gahl said, it wasn't his understanding of sport to play for a third place and that he, too, would like to disregard that match in the future.

Happybunny, is that right? (or just wrong translation?)

Silva is said to have said similar, that he can **** on that match.

--------
I heard Mehmet Scholl discussing that Cillesen might have been intimidated or had lost faith, because he might have felt, that v. Ghal had no faith in him by subbing Krul.

I read the same about van Gaal, not sure about Robben. The Brazilians will be happy to know that the Dutch aren't interested - they need to win to salvage some pride.

Whereas if the Netherlands had won, the Krul substitution inspired Cillessen to a magnificent, "screw you" performance?

If van Gaal is so good at coaching goalkeepers to save penalties then you'd think he would have done a better job on Cillessen.

Geat signing! Love to see him play much more often!

But that list of players can't be legit, costing a fortune. How come all of a sudden?

The official position of Louis has changed some what.

I think that Robben was just blowing of steam after the loss on Wednesday, I think it was said with haste because he was disappointed.

There is the money the KNVB gets 2,000,000 more for coming in third than fourth.

Third place in the tournament also gives the country Groups placement in the next World Cup 2018.

Nigel de Jong is not expected to play, there is also a very big question mark over Leroy Fer.

On the goalkeepers, Cillessen is not known for this penalty stopping, I meant he went the wrong way 4 times, and failed to hold the one ball he did touch.
But that being said he is a fantastic keeper in the regular 90mins, and a very important player.

Looking back when the tournament started very few, myself included didn’t rate the chance of the Netherlands getting out of the group let alone the semi’s.

The whole team has pulled together in a manner that just two years ago would have been unthinkable.

Plus I would like to point out the Netherlands record at world cups, is not to bad for a country of only 16,000,000.

In contrast I heard that Krull did keep 2 of 20 penalties in the league (don't know how the stats are on other keepers), so one might wonder, if he really is that penalty monster or had more luck than Cillesen.
