Neither team seemed willing or able to really press the other in a sustained way. I got the feeling that both managers were happy not to lose more than anything.

This. Plus, to be fair, both managers are new at their clubs; one more than the other.
Still a waste of time.

Glad I watched the Cardiff game, too. ;)

Games like this are the argument against ties. This was a heavyweight fight without a punch and no scorecard.
No problem at all with games ending in draws - the problem is when such games are endlessly hyped as being the very pinnacle of the sport when there's a more than reasonable chance that not very much will really happen.

Yeah, on the contrary, I don't like the US approach with the shoot-out to avoid draws (that is if it's still done that way). May be the better entertainment and I may be in the vast minority with my liking of an intelligent shut-down the Italian way at times -which wasn't the case at all yesterday- so I definitely agree with Jaffa.

Well said.I do so readily agree, here in the Netherlands last few seasons the, Ajax vs Feyenoord match is just such a prime example of hype over substance.

Nailed it.

...

Pretty funny to see Mourinho send out a starting XI with no strikers. A message to you, Rooney?

Mourinho has told him to stop messing around.;)

---

Kagawa as relationship counsellor; Rooney to Kagawa, Kagawa to RVP - being fair, there was some passing. Why didn't he come on for Welbeck?

Atkinson; Rooney, Valencia, and two Chelsea players should've been booked before the first card - though Rooney's foul was on Terry. Also, looked a penalty; Lampard moves an arm out.

Agree Lord Blackadder, not losing seemed more important.

Cheers,
OW

Ya, it's strange about Kagawa. Could be really unfit, but given the last season he doesn't seem to be be trusted much. First I thought they think him too small / not physical enough for the Prem, but looking at Oscar, which I think is a great player, that can't be the real reason as well. Has to be seen - hope they find a solution soon.

Besides that, I thought Rooney one of the better players yesterday, but it was awkward to watch at times re RvP. Maybe he's jealous because he's also good looking? :( Any news on that in the Sun?

You're correct, of course. I'm fine with draws in general. Ties do occur in the MLS. Just seems that games like this take advantage of the rule. Neither of those teams played to win and there's no penalty for lack of effort on either side. They should've given the ref a cow prod. The only player on the pitch who looked to be trying was poor Rooney. I think he was the only guy who broke a sweat!

I agree with the over-hype too. Let the game speak for itself.

Latest news on Willian is him going to Stamford Bridge..saga continues. If that's true and Mata / Rooney exchange following I hope Kagawa moves back to BVB in winter*. Poor lad.

*not happening, I know
Perhaps Kagawa will go to Chelsea, I hear they're short of attacking midfielders ;)

Oscar is a tough one to knock over.

At the start of last season Kagawa and RVP linked well, one-twos and through balls in and around the box - Rooney was out for a month early on. About the time Wayne returned, Shinji picked up an injury - two months. He seemed to be in and out from then; even a hat-trick didn't help. He did have some below average games; coming back from injury? It is strange because he is the sort of player who can unlock a stubborn defence.

Only see The Sun when the back pages are reviewed on TV; the latest is some made up tripe re Manchester United being told Bale will cost GBP 125m.

I understand why both managers were cautious, but they still deserve to be lambasted for the boring produc in the pitch. The hype in the media has to carry much of the blame as Jaffa noted.

I have to believe that Kagawa has some sort of problem, either fitness, injury or attitude. I can't see what else would keep him off the pitch.

Dortmund did say they wanted him back. Perhaps there's a deal going on?

Let's hope he ain't broken. Mentally.

Yes, they recently said that. Could happen in winter earliest. There are rumors about Özil, Benzema and DiMaria being for sale so that Madrid gets money for Suarez. Arsenal and United were mentioned. If United snatches up someone like Özil, it's defo time to go for Kagawa. But I feel stupid posting these soapy rumors. Better ignore them.

I'm probably showing my age here but I remember there was a time when it was possible to watch a football match without there being ridiculous subplots attached to it.

Man, no joke but I can't! Not even funny.

edit: if you really want to free Shinji: #freeshinji

i need to get some black socks with red hoops... anyone?

i've found a pair made by red lion but their socks are ****. i have a white pair with green hoops from them. meh!

the team i'm playing on this fall & coming spring is going to be wearing a dc united kit from here: www.mlsrec.com

actually it is going to be the top only.

Well, Liverpool's slim chances of getting a result against Man Utd. on the weekend just got a bit slimmer due to injuries, Kolo Toure in particular. A 4-2 extra time win against Notts County seems a bad trade for losing three players for an indeterminate amount of time.

Wouldn't mind a boring 0-0 of epic proportions. :D

Well, you just know that the hype machine will be in full swing. Liverpool will lose, but I hope they at least score a couple goals. They can't afford to sit back against United. Not with the defense in it's current condition. The only way they could get a result would be if Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger had outstanding performances. Or if RVP gets hurt in training before Sunday.

Evra to score, or is he on the bench?;)

No need for the pessimism; early kick-off + Anfield doesn't point to a Manchester United victory.

On the Kagawa thing, doubt it is attitude; seems to follow Park's line.

---

If betting is anything to go by, Nani is off to Juventus. The Club's best winger on his day. If true and someone decent isn't coming in,. Di Maria? He'd show Young whose boss when it comes to diving. Baines in front of Evra?

Cheers,

Liverpool failed to beat any of the top 4+1 tames last season. Now, they are arguably a stronger squad than they were last year BUT Toure is now injured and Suarez is still banned (though Sturridge is doing well so far). I'll concede a draw is possible but am still pessimistic. If United play poorly anything is possible of course, but you certainly can't bank on that.

Re: Nani going. I can't see them selling another player without replacement. The question then becomes who looks like joining?

Is it just me or is AVB replacing players in virtually every position at Spurs.
