You could certainly 'afford' most players, but could you 'buy' them? Most top players are going to want CL football and the chance of a domestic title. Not going to happen with Spurs in the foreseeable future, but as I said, you could bring in a few very good players for that sort of money. The problem is, how valuable (cash aside) is Bale to the team?

All true - but Bale also wants Champions League football now. He's put in time at Spurs and is at the peak of his powers. Liverpool are dealing with a somewhat similar situation with Suarez. If he can't be convinced to stay, he must go.

I agree about his role at Madrid conflicting with Ronaldo's (though Crsipy could go back to United...unlikely, of course, but possible). We'll just have to wait and see.

I think Spurs can afford to sell him. He might be technically irreplaceable but Spurs don't need a 1:1 replacement for Bale. In fact, two 25 million pound players bought after selling Bale might be even better than one 70 million pound player in terms of meeting their stated goals.

Funnily enough, Spurs probably need a Suarez more :)

If Bale isn't scoring for them, then I'm not sure their forwards are up to scoring hatfulls of goals

Their Forwards aren't CL material. Spurs midfield is solid, D is good enough, but unless they produce up front, they'll yet again be on the outside lookin in. Go young, go foreign, go risky... Just do something. Defoe and Adebayor aren't goon to cut it. Can't they get rid of Dempsey if they need cash? Love the guy, but he doesn't fit as well as he could with another club.

Side note, I did enjoy watching Holtby last year. I think he's going to create chances this season.

If i were Real i wouldn't bother. Bale is worth £45m at best. Its daylight robbery plus a slap to the face.

Bayern:

Guardiola has really used Lahm as a Midfielder in the last two matches I've seen and Martinez as inner defender. Today Lahm is on the right defense again. I actually thought of Martinez more as a midfielder, before.

PS: while I thought the Lewandowski move discussion was over with the "no", I read that Lewandowski is still getting more and more p**ssed, because Dortmund won't let him move. He said, that he still gives his best, but there will be a time, when he will come to a match and he will not be in a good mood and will not play good. It seems Dortmund's "no" wasn't a definitive "no" to Lewandowski. His manager is still trying to find a way to convince Dortmund.

wow! i thought it was a done deal a long time ago...

Pah. You wish you'd signed Dean Windass. :p

The one thing I can guarantee Zayatte will bring to the Wendies is comedy own goals - and let's not forget that he was a bit naughty when he left us...

Me said:
In other footballing news, you may remember our erstwhile defender Kamil Zayatte – whichever team you support, chances are he's scored an own goal in your favour when we've met in the past.

Anyway, he left the club at the end of last week after we agreed to terminate his contract. There was a (publicly) undisclosed family problem that required him to return to France, the indication seemed to be that there was a serious illness involving a close family member, and his presence was needed by his stricken relation. As such, he was allowed to leave the club and return home.

So imagine our surprise when it turned out he's just signed for Turkish strugglers Konyaspor – he's even got a shirt and a couple of fancy flags all sorted out.

Hmm... clearly that seriously ill relative got better very quickly.

On the plus side, his considerable wage is no longer our responsibility and we also took the sensible precaution of – although his contract was terminated – holding onto his playing registration, so Konyaspor will be paying us a fee for acquiring the defender's services.

For his part, Zayatte says about moving to his new club...

'Konyaspor'da, Türkiye'nin en iyi 18 takımından biri. Bizim amacımız Konyaspor'un başarılı olmasına katkıda bulunmak. En kısa sürede forma giyerek buna bende destek vermek istiyorum. Konyaspor'u Türk futbolunda adından daha fazla söz edilen kulüplerden biri haline getirmek istiyoruz.'

Pah. There are only 18 teams in the Turkish top flight anyway Kamil. :p

Not sure what happened to us. We were 1-0, I come back form the toilet and we're 2-1 down :(

I'm excited to see him play for us.

Obligatory youtube video.

He seems to score a lot with his first touch. It's good that he doesn't need a touch or two to control the ball first.

Yes. Quite vulturish, too. Needed!

Here's NBC's new promo for their broadcast of the EPL. They just got the rights from Fox. The actor is Jason Sudekis, a Saturday Night Live alum. Thought it was pretty funny:

I saw that. Pretty funny. NBC are doing a good job promoting the Premier League. They have a huge poster of Bale in Times Square and have a thing on the subway.

Initially, I thought it was just Utd, City, Arsenal, and Tottenham. Did not know that Everton was there too.

PS: he said it is unfair, they do not let him go now. His contract ends 2014 and the contract said, he can go early, if the price is right. Very smart. That way Dortmund can determine what is the "right price". The question is, what the strategy is. I wonder, how their financial estimations are, if they say, he has to fulfill his contract till the end (2014) and do not want to take the money now, instead.

Columbus lost again, this time a 3-1 defeat at Houston.

This is our lowest point since the 2008 championship run. Surely our manager won't survive this offseason...the new owners have much to prove, and they will have their work cut out for them. I expect a clearout this fall.
