Columbus lost again, this time a 3-1 defeat at Houston.

This is our lowest point since the 2008 championship run. Surely our manager won't survive this offseason...the new owners have much to prove, and they will have their work cut out for them. I expect a clearout this fall.

we'll see. if they are paying any attention at they will make a big change...soon...

Yay! Hertha made it happen, finally surviving a first cup round! Pen in the 89th min...:D

And by the looks of it it seems like Werder Bremen will have a really hard time to stay in the first Bundesliga this time. Way to go down. :(

I did only see the summary, but I guess Hertha isn't ready for First Bundesliga, either, hm? But of course, others have struggled big, too, like Mönchengladbach.
But I'd better shut my mouth looking at how Mainz05 did... ;)
We will see, if that is only the DFB-Cup or, if that does really mean something for the Bundesliga. I mean the coaches say, that the DFB-cup has always had its own rules, right? :)

I remember takao saying the quality of the austrian first league is not good and you can see this from the austria cup, where a first league team lost against a fourth league team. OK, that was in the final. But do the results of the first round of the german Bundesliga now tell us, that the quality is not widely spread or does it say that even the lower leagues have great quality???

Wonder, if that guy, Siegel, who kept all the Dortmund goals for Wilhelmshaven will be transfered to a higher league, at the end of the season :D

It will be tough...unlike Seattle, we can't attract players like Clint Dempsey. Still, I maintain that we have a good squad on paper this season (we need more depth perhaps, but the core is there). I think a new manager could make a big difference. I also assume that, being money-men, the new owners will be taking a hard look at our sponsorship situation and trying to improve it. The push for 10,000 season ticket sales is still ongoing as well.

IMHO the german 2. Bundesliga is perhaps the strongest second level league of all the big football countries only the english championship is comparable

i watch the games from time to time and from the austrian top flight only Red Bull Salzburg, Austria Vienna and on better days Rapid Vienna could compete there

i think for the cup games it's really that "game of the season" or "once in a lifetime" factor that comes into play for the smaller teams

for Austrian football: newly promoted SV Grödig (coined "Dorfclub"="village club") just hammered Admira 7:1 (3 red cards, 4 penalties
i suspect admria was too much in awe of Sv Grödig's breath taking atmosphere

yes .. this is the correct picture

Not sure if this 'the cup has its own rules thing' applies to the English leagues as well...but Hertha does have a well established tradition of losing against much, much weaker teams on a regular basis the first round. That's why I think they can even qualify for Europe this time, Cox Orange. ;)

I remember fondly last year, when billionaires toy boys Hoffenheim, and their coaching disgrace Markus Babbel, lost against a regional team (and Berlin's finest): AK 07 0:4.

Bremen on the other hand - such a sad story. They renovated the whole Bundesliga some years ago, like Dortmund nowadays somehow, but being set in such a miserable and financially poor context like Bremen they just couldn't hold up. Invested lots of money (too much imho) into infrastructure/stadium and couldn't keep or properly replace the loss of talent they have to suffer every single year. So now they have better infrastructure, but no team. Since even the long term manager and coach went + I don't like the new coach, Dutt, too much...I see them having a hard time to stay in the first Bundesliga. Hope I'm wrong, though.

Bremen never really managed to find a replacement for the aging Frings .. and without a single good defensive midfielder at his disposal Schaaf continue to play with a 4-1-2-1-2 diamond formation for 2 friggin years

without a world class defensive midfielder and an excellent playmaker (Hunt is a good offensive midfielder but he is no Diego or Özil) that formation simply is too naive against today's 4-2-3-1 because you simply can't keep possession

Schaaf should have been fired a year ago for this tactical stupidity of trying to play his favourite formation without having the players to do so

last year their squad should have been a 4-3-3 right from the start ... Ellia, Petersen, Arnautovic is an excellent 3 front player setup on paper, but Schaaf would rather play Hunt as a hanging striker and put Junuzovic in as a defensive midfielder (he plays best as a offensive, free role character)

and players like Bargfrede or Mielitz are 2. league players at best

Yea, agreed, Takao. As much as it was set in stone that Schaaf/Allofs will always find the next best man for OM (Micould, Diego then Özil) after they had to sell them, as much their transfer failures became sort of a running gag. Schaaf was worn out, that's true - but I don't think the new coach will turn it around either.

Besides Frings, let's not forget about Frank Baumann > not a good player (technically) but tremendously important for team chemistry. Which is non-existent now I'd guess.

Afternoon all, the EPL clearly playing catch-up to Germany, Spain AND France as the desired destination of 'marquee' transfers. Money being the primary reason one would imagine (Spain can structure salaries to allow payments to be more tax efficient).

But in the case of Germany's upswing, it is perhaps benefitting from the 'halo' effect of an all-German Champions league final?

----------

You could certainly 'afford' most players, but could you 'buy' them? Most top players are going to want CL football and the chance of a domestic title.

Someone explain the Falcao and Cavani transfers to me please?

For an absurd amount of cash, I'd love to explain it to you.

Btw. just read that Arsenal is thinking about Marica. The horror. Heh, good for me I'm no Gunner...

You make it sound so pleasant. ;)

So, as we enter the "Financial Fair Play" era, we are discovering that transfer fee records will continue to be broken; big clubs will remain big and better able to cheat the taxman, while small clubs will feel the brunt of additional financial regulation. Clubs will have to be a little more clever at hiding debt but it seems that it won't be very difficult to sidestep the rules, especially with regards to the richest clubs.

Maybe it will reduce the number of small clubs that go bust, but it surely won't make things more fair for smaller/medum-sized clubs vis a vis the big clubs.

It seems that fears that FFP would simply "lock in" the biggest clubs are largely justified.

Surely he'll be sold this summer? I can't see it otherwise. Liverpool are probably just playing for time while they find a replacement.

Rodgers has responded. Both parties are just depressing to watch at this point.

We get this kind of thing every off-season, only the names and clubs are different. I have no problem with Suarez leaving, but he should not be sold to a direct rival like Arsenal. Timing is important - if he is to go, a drawn-out transfer saga will be bad for Liverpool. If he is to stay, I worry that Liverpool are in for a long season.

Whatever happens, I hope it happens before the season starts.

EDIT: If Arsenal does get him, it will be very, very interesting to see what Gunners fans say about him going forward. I'll reckon that thousands of voices that were once raised in condemnation toward the racists biter might begin to soften their rhetoric, and perhaps even defend him....Luis may or may not be a horrible human being but one thing's for sure - he is a ruthless exposer of the capricious and hypocritical nature of football fans. ;)

Isn't NBC doing a thing where they go over all the teams? I think I read that they're doing something like that starting today. I didn't see anything on the TV guide though (for their main channel).

Also, I have Cablevision (Optimum). Does anyone know what all the channels are? I think NBC have 4 that they're using for the Premier League. So far my Google search has been unsuccessful but I'm still looking.

Edit: OK I found it :p

I actually don't really want him at the Emirates. Would've taken Higuain anyday. Probably spoilt because many of the top players that have worn the Arsenal shirt have been great characters on/off pitch. The most exemplary being Henry. No doubt Suarez is an incredible player but character wise...hmm...

I do agree that football fans are a hopelessly fickle bunch and i'd imagine many a Gooner would do a 180

Doesn't matter though, since it would take a miracle for him to end up at the Emirates. Liverpool are clearly stalling for Real or someone else to come and get him...especially now that the Bale £86m deal is looking like a no go.

I hope Spurs and Liverpool (and even United) don't come to regret the hardline stance they've taken against their wantaway stars.

Few things worse in football than forcing a player thats become disillusioned with the club to stay. You may end up with a Carlos Tevez or Mario Balotelli. Just look at Fernando Llorente and Bilbao.

I agree. Rooney, Suarez and Bale all want to go. Any of those that aren't sold will probably become a pariah (perhaps not Bale, but surely the other two). Everything will probably happen at the last minute.

There's been conflicting information that Bale would be happy to stay another season and that he's desperate to go, but won't force a move. Until something concrete happens, it's anybody's guess.

After two or three seasons at Arsenal, he will bite Mignolet, complain about the press, moan about England, demand a move because he wants to play at a higher level and for a club/in a country that understands him, threaten legal action, and end up at Manchester City. Thought even a desperate Arsenal wouldn't be willing to sell their soul, wrong.

Cheers,
OW

If Suarez was final the missing piece that brought a championship the way RVP was for United last season, Arsenal would happily buy him and not be sorry about it either, despite all the bad behavior. Any club would. Titles and CL football are the ends that justify all means.

Any club playing in the Premier League has already sold a part of its soul anyway. The longer you've been in, the more soulless you must be. All the top leagues and European competitions are about money and entertainment. Loyalty, sportsmanship and respect for "history" or "tradition" are the exception rather than the rule and are just words used to sell the product. At least they still (usually) put on a show.

So, Jaffa, it seems your fears on Allam's rebranding of Hull City were justified. [EDIT - beaten by Olly]

Allam said:
City is a lousy identity.

If I were a Hull City fan I would not be happy about this at all. Allam seems to be heavily invested in making the club successful - but according to his vision. I really don't think that Hull City's name was a stumbling block to broader exposure in the world.

In other news, Liverpool owner John W Henry says that Suarez is staying. His reasoning is pretty succinct and logical, though we still don't know what, if any behind the scenes maneuverings have taken place. I agree that he should not be sold to a rival, and that there isn't much time left to find a replacement.

All we can hope for now is that Suarez buckles down and resigns himself to playing another season here. I fear, though, that this will be another Tevez saga. This will be a big test for Brendan Rogers and all the Liverpool suits. Could be a nightmare. I also hope the fans don't get on his back too much. Loyalty is exceedingly rare in this business.
