Laudrup will get another job. Swansea have been missing key players for most of the season.

Still seem to be hungover from that League Cup win.

West Ham have had their appeal against Andy Carroll's red card rejected, so they lose their big man for three matches. I can see why, on technical grounds, the card was given and upheld, Carroll flailed his arm quite obviously...but Chico Flores is a disgrace as well.

Retrospective bans for feigning injury/play acting would go a long way towards cutting down on bad behavior. No idea why nobody talks seriously about implementing something like that.

Well, Jaffa, it looks like it's Rebranding Time in Columbus!

Columbus Crew are the last MLS club still sporting their original crest, rolled out way back in 1996 at the league's founding. But new owner Anthony Precourt is setting out to change that.

The funny thing is, if you look at the recent trends in MLS in terms of 'branding', it runs in the opposite direction to where Assem Allam wants to go. Clubs and fans are gravitating towards a more 'traditional' look and sound, though the league will always feature uniquely American adaptations.

The name changes in particular have been telling: Dallas Burn -> FC Dallas, Kansas City Wizards -> Sporting Kansas City. San Jose's new crest looks more NASL than NFL. There have been some missteps (Real Salt Lake is frankly silly), but the trend is clearly towards a more 'traditional' look and feel rather than the bold, cartoonish logos and spurious names of the early years. Maybe those were necessary to get the league started, but we've seen continuous evolution since the 1990s, and it's time to grow up a bit.

I'm hoping that the new owners can come up with a new crest that strikes the right chord with the times and with the supporters. Unlike the situation in Hull, Columbus is a young club in a young league, and we are still searching for our identity. It's OK to change things at this point, but the change must still be done carefully so that it takes us forward and not backwards.

i wanted to recommend some joking names like "Lokomotiv New York", "Rapid Los Angeles" only to realize that you already have Houston Dynamo and Colorado Rapids ;)
i think having them wrong ordered makes it worse: Dynamo Houston or Rapid Colorado would have been better

IMHO one can use such a name but i think those are best used on cooperation with another club who has the same name and possible similar crest colors ... also artificially using a former worker's-club name on upper class-rich club (or the reverse) seems rather funny

Real Salt lake as you said seems rather silly in the US context (for the lack of a king)

Football clubs can have "sponsor" names if those are planning to carry them for a long long time or even funny ones if they work / or are genuine:
Take a name and stick with it and use the same shirt designs/colors over decades

another one i would find funny:
Torpedo Toronto (normally an ice hockey club but simply too good to pass it up)

some names though i really like:
New England Revolution
Montreal Impact
Chicago Fire
LA Galaxy
Seattle Sounders

alle sound rather american without being silly like Crew,Timbers,Earthquakes & Whitecaps

To be fair, Colorado's name refers to river rapids rather than riffing on European naming conventions - but, now that you mention it, I think 'Rapid Colorado' would be intriguing.

From the beginning, American sports team names have often been a bit more brash and glitzy than most European sports team names - As far back as the 1850s you had baseball teams named Excelsior and Eureka, or teams like the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers (who became the Brooklyn Dodgers). You had the Sea Lions, The Apostles, the Robin Hoods...also plenty of quite weird ones like the the Prohibitionists, the Onion Weeders, the Coal Heavers... European clubs might have similarly unusual nicknames, but not 'official' names.

American names are also usually pluralized rather than expressed in the singular i.e. The Cleveland Browns rather than Liverpool Football Club. This convention also dates back to the mid-19th century. So the Columbus Crew fits firmly within that tradition. But most football fans in this country probably identify more with a more European naming convention.

Preseason Scoop: Columbus just beat Sweden's Malmö FF 1-0 in very foggy conditions in Florida yesterday. A perfect record so far for the new ownership. ;)

new quakes kit & badge are ****.

I agree on the shirts, but I think the crest is an improvement on the previous effort, even if it is not an outstanding effort. It looks very NASL to me.

Ah, good childhood memories of going to Quakes matches and watching a certain hirsute midfielder plying his trade:

The new logos and kits... meh. Wish they'd go all-in on old skool already.

No to Columbus... er...

As for Miami, Beckham's probably looking to use his new team's identity to reference his time at one of England's most famous clubs. 'Miami North End' has a certain ring to it.

Anyway, as we're discussing rebrands and the like - a quick 'No To Hull Tigers' campaign update. Various 'stakeholder' groups have been meeting with the FA over the past week or two as part of the ongoing consultation process, including the main City till We Die group who toddled down to Wembley earlier this week. They've since published their submission materials and rather impressive they are too, including this video...

I might have gotten something in my eye whilst I was watching that.

Anyway, a boost this morning - the East Riding County FA (our local branch of the FA) has conducted a ballot of its members and the result was overwhelmingly in favour of the ERCFA officially opposing the name change. As such, they'll be against it in their submission to their parent body and will also vote against it as a member of the FA Council - the vote which will ultimately decide our fate. One would hope that their opposition will carry a fair bit of weight with the national FA, and will also encourage other FA Council members to follow suit.

Speaking of rebranding, my local club got a new updated logo. No word on kits yet. I like the update. Hadn't changed since 1996. We've got a new owner and a MLS affiliation with Toronto FC. Nice to see the commitment to the team and it's future.

Edit: Jaffa, watched the vid. The old lady's quote in the beginning is the best argument. Basically, the club is the supporters and while everything else changes about the club, the name is the common thread thru history.

The excerpt from the lady actually comes from a call she made to the local radio station when they were having a phone in on the name change. She got quite emotional, bless her.

What, laced shirts, handlebar moustaches and really heavy leather balls? ;)

Nicely done, that video. Positive, rather than attacking Allam's craziness. Having the local FA on board can't hurt at all! The fans are doing all the right things, and Allam continues to look like a spoiled brat.

Actually, if Mr Beckham is looking for a name, my suggestion would be Miami Vice. Come on David, you know you want to!

love that video.

Meanwhile, Pellegrini calls Mou out on his 'mind games'

As entertaining as Mou is, he's still a giant hypocrite and I think I enjoyed the sulky, woe-is-me Mou at Real Madrid more than the cocksure, take-a-dig-at-everyone Mou at Chelsea. On current form Chelsea look like very strong contenders but there are a lot of games yet to play.

Mournho recently said

Everything I say and do are mind games

Which is, in itself, a mind game.

Ta ra, Vida.

Of United's three aging defenders, he is the one I would have liked to keep for another season, just for a bit more experience and continuity, preferably off the bench. I think his wife has wanted to go to Milan for many years, and he'll probably cope fairly well in Serie A to see out the rest of his career.

It's a pretty sure bet that Rio and Evra are also out the door after this season. There's no way United could fail to sign a top class center back and left back this summer… is there?

In Maybe-There-Is-A-God-After-All news, Frank Ribery is out with a burst blood vessel in his buttock.

a hit before such important games but on the other side their backups on the attacking position are numorous

i suspect Guardiola will put up madzukic up front again and after that still has the choice between Götze, shaqiri, Kroos, Thiago,Müller, and perhaps Robben if he gets fit

Thiago being in blistering form currently:
against Eintracht Frankfurt on the last weekend he had 169 passes..
Frankfurt: 275... the whole team combined

Truly world-class center backs are arguably as hard to find as world-class strikers. There are plenty of big goons out there that can win headers and smash a clearance 100 yards upfield. But it's much harder to find a big, reasonably speedy player who is also good with the ball at his feet and can mark players without having to resort to Terryesque last-ditch tackles.

Oh yes, they have plenty of depth. But they'll miss Ribery's diving skills. ;)

*shrug* oh well...congrats to 'Pool

Hopefully the boys will respond appropriately in the FA Cup tie.

Absolutely stunned. Arsenal's defense has been so strong for most of the season, what happened? Liverpool's attackers ran rampant. Suarez is not scoring quite as often lately but Sturridge and Sterling took up the slack in a big way today.

EDIT: Sunderland down to ten men against Hull after just three minutes with a straight red to Wes Brown. Time for Jaffa's boys to pounce. Shane Long has already scored to make it 1-0...could we see a rout here?
