The Red Sox have to decide what to do with Lester, he is on his last year and will want to get paid, even tho he said he will take a home town discount.

I am surprised that they didn't make anymore more off season moves, they might not have enough to repeat.

Everyone is talking about the Yankees being better, and on paper they are. I just worry about injuries, they are teetering on the edge again this year.

The Yankees needed to get Tanaka, time will tell how good he is. It's not like he is pitching in the AL West.

They'd better pay him. He seems willing to work with them, but regardless, he's a player that must be signed. No excuse, they're not the Rays.

I think this year will be something of a transition year, which last year was supposed to be. I don't know, though, it's hard to predict for me because they seemed to have lightning in a bottle for a bit last year.

It'll come down to a healthy pitching staff, as always. If Lester/Buchholz can stay healthy, Doubront continues his great progress, and Lackey stays consistent (I don't expect him to have as good a year as last year), they'll be right in it.

snip...

you clearly know nothing about my position on sports. I dislike the Yankees, yes, because they're our rivals.

Let's see.

Gee I didn't know you remembered what you had posted about the Yankees. I am also going to go out on a limb and say, well, um, you like the Red Sox?

But seriously, I know you know a lot about sports and I enjoy reading your posts. It's just when it's your team all your objectivity and knowledge go out the window and that's what I call anybody on whether they know some or know a ton. I may not know every stat about my Giants, A's, Raiders, Niners, Warriors, or Sharks like some people I know but I know enough when I am meeting a superior team like 2012 Detroit Tigers (who we mysteriously swept in a way nobody predicted) OR recent meeting with dominant Seahawks, when I know enough to be scared and to respect that team. Whatever the outcome, the Tigers were a better team in 2012 MLB than the Giants and the Seahawks of this year were most certainly better than my 49ers. It's no fun to say that but it's true according to most who follow this professionally.

There's no room for trash talk yet I can say I hate them or I don't like their attitude but to say, "We will cream them" is simply stupid on every level just because I dislike or hate them. While I certainly don't like the attitude of Richard Sherman on the Seahawks, I know it's just that type of stuffing of an offense which meant it could spell trouble for my team, and it did. And earlier in the year, I knew that it wasn't cool that the rival Dodgers got former SF pitcher Brian Wilson, who at the very least was a morale booster for Giants team and fans, but realized that when the Dodgers started getting mid to late season momentum, it was nearly hopeless for us to catch LA in the MLB NL West. That being said many Bay Area fans, whatever their knowledge, like to chalk it up to "Seattle sucks" or "Dodgers suck" and I guess that's a fun part of the sport.

I don't really need to read too much of what you said when I see that when the Pats or Red Sox lost, it's because somebody cheated, there's a conspiracy, or somebody doped up, or there was a bad call, or somebody was hurt. You are the best Boston maker of creative, and not so creative excuses. Can't you ever say, gee, we lost? It won't make you a lesser person and in sports sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, and in the last decade+ or so, Boston has been the winningest city in America so you have very little room for complaint.

For your own sanity's sake I hope the Red Sox shut down the Yankees every single time Tanaka pitches so you can make up a theory that is always somewhat more relevant than what SI or ESPN seems to think with their analysis.

What helped them last year was the division imploding in on itself. The Yankees were never really a threat except for a few weeks in August. The Blue Jays never lived up to expectations and Baltimore ran out of gas. I expect well hope the Yankees will be better and they should be with the pieces they added. The Rays are always a threat and I think Baltimore will be a pain as usual. I don't know what to expect out of Toronto.

Yeah, I'm never objective about my team..

One thing the Red Sox do much better than the Yankees is lock up their guys before their contract actually ends. Had the Yanks offered Cano an extension 1-2 years ago, he probably would have taken less and he'd be a Yankee for life. They seem to wait until the contract ends and overpay - not the best way to treat your homegrown guys. I really hope they learned from the Cano thing and make an effort to extend both Gardner and D-Rob before their walk years.

The Pedroia deal was a gem for both parties. It's a shame the Yanks weren't paying attention.

I think you're confusing Queen of Spades with Zioxide. You're dead wrong on this one.

Here is something to chew on, Fox is buying it's remaining shares of the Yes Network and will hold 80% while the Yankees will regain 20%.

Very, very interesting.

It's a trend I see happening more and more, and I think it's good for baseball. It'll be weird to see Cano with Seattle. Although I'll be glad not to see him in the Yankees lineup anymore. ;)

Thank you for that.

The Yankees made their money back in off season spending, the sale of Yes to Fox will be around 500 million.

From what I have read, he was afraid of getting the Pete Rose treatment as he would like to stay in the industry once he retires from the field.
After suing the union I doubt he will get good treatment anymore.

I think it's definitely time, though it'll be weird without him. He'll get quite the sendoff, I'm sure.

I just saw this come over the wire. I think everyone hoped this would be the end, didn't want to see him go out 3 years to late. This will be a true end of a Yankee Dynasty.:(

It will most definitely be the end of that era. I, too, never thought DJ would hang on for as long as he could.

For as much as people love to hate the Yankees, they really had guys that were nothing but class acts. It's going to be an adjustment watching the Yanks without anyone left from those championship teams in the 90's.

Agreed. I feared he would try to stay on longer than he should. Think last season was a wake up call for him.

Hope he has a pretty decent performance this season so he can go out on a good note.

I agree. Very bummed that this is happening, but it is time.......Especially given his health issues last year. :(

I am sure he will have a great send off year!!!
