I was thinking of the England/Germany match in 1970 as the starting point, but on reflection I believe the 1-0 loss to Yugoslavia in the 1968 European Championships was considered a bigger screw-up.

A fully committed, physically strong, technically poor, England team snatch glorious defeat from the jaws of victory.
I feel very pity for England, loosing through an own goal is one thing, but loosing in the 90th minute is tragic. I mean they dominated Japan at a lot of times. There was even that phase towards the end were they made Japan loose their head for a certain time and Japan lost their organising and Japan couldn't get the ball away, because England kept it in their half, but as soon as the ball was pushed far back out of the Japanese half and England didn't bring the ball back directly, Japan reorganised again.

Though Japan was even better than 2011 (already coming from a high level), this could be the key for the US, pressure, pressure, pressure. (Which is their plan for every match, ok, I know,... well).

And if Germany tries to play nice and ticki-tacka, they will get problems with England, too.

Well, Germany's problems (in the France and US match, and slightly showing in matches before) were more, that they had no ideas and very often took wrong decisions for passes and some of the players played under their abilities (or maybe they are just not able to play all that, when there is a faster opponent, that doesn't give them time to think and "show off" their technique. Although Germany looked better against France and the US in the friendlies and the Algarve Cup). It is always easy to blame the coach, but I think there had been some wrong decisions, too. Leaving out less experienced, but fitter players. I won't get into detail.

Oh, and thinking of Germany, England's shots (be it long shots or not) were closer to the box - even hitting the bar -, than Germany's attempts.

Other teams will have an even bigger chance against Germany at Olympia, because the goalkeeper resigns. Not that the no2 is bad, but Angerer also brought stability into the team outside the pitch and were able to analyse things.

At the Euro Cup 2017 Germany will be even worse, because the current coach resigns and is replaced by a former 1990ies player, who has no coach license nor studied coaching, Steffie Jones (currently head for the women branch at the DFB). Bad times for Germany will come, with players, that are actually able to do more.

Heartbreaking for England but they do not have the baggage that the men's team carries - they'll certainly win the world cup before the men do.

As for USA, they are good enough to win this tournament, a good mix of youth and experience. I want revenge against Japan.

I have the England vs Germany match on the big screen and COPA America final between Chile and Argentina. After tomorrows ladies championship match I may have to enter football rehab...lol! I hope I don't burn the 4th of July barbecue while watch all the football.

Now i can confirm, that van gaal had a personal issue with Falcao. i just read that van persie is going to the turkish league? so when van gaal put persie to play instead of falcao, van gaal was just giving falcao a hard time, what was the use of playing persie if he was leaving...man u will be a joke as long as van gaal is there, van gaal should retire...SMH

Shocked at the final score in the World Cup final - I felt cautiously optimistic for USA after the semifinal, but never expected to put 5 past Japan. As for Lloyd's exploits - can you imagine what the reaction would be in the mens' game if a player scored a hat trick in the WC final - including a 50+ yarder??? What a performance! (As an aside, is Geoff Hurst the only other player to score a hat trick in a WC final? I think so...)

Congrats to Chile in the Copa America - they have been a good team for years now and isn't this their first major tournament win? Brazil's self-destruction and Dunga Football v 2.0 continues. Argentina fail to capitalize on this once again, however.

Coming off the World Cup high, USA fans must now brace themselves as the men start their Gold Cup campaign. We need to win this to get an automatic berth in the next FIFA Confederations Cup. Honduras awaits tomorrow (and they are a rather nasty, physical team) followed by Costa Rica and Mexico. Tough games.

For people who didn't watch the final it will look as if women's football hasn't progressed and that results of 7:0 are still normal. In terms of getting it open to a wider audience it is perhaps not good.

But for those who saw it, it was a finale worth the name (just like USA-Japan 2011). I think the biggest advantage for the US was that they made the 3 goals early and then even the 4th. But great how Japan still fought and tried to come back and while it was unlikely that you equalize a 5:2 in 10 minutes, during the match one still could have the thought that Japan might come up with a miracle, maybe through possessing the ball and calming everything down as they usually do it.
Probably not as historical like 2014s GER-BRA 7:1, but was really worth watching it and Loyd's long goal is certainly something to remember which will come up in future WC reports, when they look back at the tournament history of the US team.

I read Americans that after the US's match against Columbia (and also taking into account how it struggled against the so called group of death of which all teams went home early) were predicting Germany would smash them 5:0 in the final. Now, where is Germany? They were already criticised for not going 15:0 (instead of 10:0) against Ivory Coast in the first match. What after the Sweden match in the 1/8th final could still have been seen as the usual German nagging "yes, but we actually should have done better". I mean the problems were visible in the group stage already, but after France, USA and England it is clear that there is more to it.
>snip< (deletedtoo long text about what went wrong ;) ) >snip<
And the bad side effect of it (Germany's bad passing, un-creativity, not shown, but expected high technical standard) will be, that people will think that this is just how crappy women's football is.

Mark Samspon, England's coach, is a real character and a funny person. He said "Yes, Japan has technically superb players, but we have some half-talented players, too!". :D It will surely be nice to watch, how he further develops the team (perhaps the Thomas Tuchel of women's football :D ).

Brazil: what they show with the men and the women may indicate that they are doing something wrong with their youth training (which should involve technical training, too).

The appearance of Switzerland and England have made it less predictable who will win and in return more fun to watch the next Euro Cup. But first let us wait for the Olympics (were they won't take part, but anyway).

How was Falcao in the Copa? Where was he v Argentina?

Women's football shouldn't exist, it should just be football; the same with athletics, tennis - no men's, women's, mixed, just tennis - etc.

Cheers,

Thinking about going to the Canyon of Heroes on Friday to watch the ticker tape parade for the USWNT.
