8 minutes in and France is 2:0 ahead vs S. Korea

France is the way better team so far. Everytime France throws in a high gear on the attack it smells like a goal.

Hehe, ya, I was just typing... :)

I had expected a more equal match and a fast forth and back between both sides. I bet, when France and Germany will play against each other this will go really speedy (on women's standards) and get a hard fight.

Later it's Canada vs Switzerland. I am curious which philosophy will prevail in the match: the old style kick and rush by Regular Canada or the modern (but still "nascent") central-european short/quick-pass-playing by rookie Switzerland. Switzerland played good with that against a technique focused team like the last times World Champion Japan, but had a lot of problems against an attack focused Cameroons.

and then there were 8...

Striker still needed though. They can't keep relying on Giroud and Alexis is not an out and out CF

WOW! Surprise. Congratulations to England (against Norway) for winning a World Cup K.O. match for the first time!

(I leave the result out, for the very very rare case one of our Brits wants to watch this later via stream or in a rerun on BBC-3 or something :D - I learned BBC is showing ALL matches live this year and with the new coach there was a 5-year plan given out for England's women's football and some investments)

It first looked a bit boring, but the 2nd half made up for it (and Norway having the chance to equalize 3min. before end).
Both teams needed one corner each for their first goals.

The first half looked as if England was playing for extra time and penalties (and the commentator was speculating on it and making it look due to quotes, as if it was like this). Towards the end of the 2nd England got boos for willingly holding the ball near the corner flag several times to play down the clock (getting throw ins). Smartly done. Now they will play against Canada next.
It is funny, I actually considered both teams on par with each other and I didn't actually expect one or the other to win. (I know, sounds a bit strange to say Norway is on the same niveau, while knowing that England comes from a low niveau and Norway had just played 1:1 against Germany, which again is considered one of the strongest. Yet Norway often gets to half finals or finals in EuroCups. Well, maybe just tells, that I have no understanding of what they (or the teams in general) are doing. :)

Canada won 1:0 against Switzerland. Switzerland was a bit better in the 1st half than Canada and they should have done their goal then. The 2nd half SWI was getting weaker and weaker, maybe lost condition.Would have been a sensation, when Switzerland had won the 1/8 final at their 1st appearance on world stage, but for the tournament it is maybe better Canada won. Not only because it is the host, but because we probably don't need another european team playing a mixture of central european ticki-tacka and attack football with high standing / running wing defenders, just less mature than Germany and France.

Now USA vs Colombia. I am very interested in seeing how this will look and turn out.

Good I am up late usually anyway. :D

PS: the citizens of Frankfurt decided FOR a DFB-academy on the 150 years old horse racing track and part of the city forest. Only 20% of the city population took part in it.

***Breaking news*** Edinson Cavani's father was drunk driving and killed a 19 yr old on a motorcycle and was arrested, looks like Cavani is out of the Copa america. tough blow for Uruguay.

WOMEN's: USA wins over Columbia... - So let's sum this up:

- Columbia's older no1 goal keeper wasn't allowed to play due to collecting 2 yellows in the games before. Their no 3 played, a rookie (hence the unwise behaviour before the penalty, I'd say)
- it was 0:0 in the 2nd half and Columbia's substitute goalkeeper got a red for fouling Alex Morgan (which I comprehend was a right decision by the french referee, who I had felt/suspected was judging in favour of Columbia in the first half.)
- only striker on the field goes off the pitch (hadn't done much anyway), Columbia's no2 goalkeeper (very young, too) had to keep Abby Wambach's penalty. Wambach doesn't find the box.

With Columbia down to 10! USA needs another penalty (plus a goal from the field) to win 2:0. Not bad, (very young) Columbia!

When Columbia was in front of the US box, they always waited to long and (especially their young technique-wonder Lady Andrade) dribbled around with the ball, running circles around herself instead of doing a high flank (parallel to the line) from the right of the 16m-area to the middle, as if they were waiting till two more US players blocked the player with the ball. This happened several times.
When they tried it through the middle, they always didn't get enough speed behind the ball. So you could wait and see the ball flying through the air and Solo could hold her hands open, in preparation waiting agog for the ball to finish its flight.
They were always fast up to the box, but then waited to long undecisively.
You would think such a young team would collapse after the red, but they still did a good job, I think.
This was FIFA rank 28 (Columbia, 1692) against 2 (USA, 2158).

Last 1/8 final Japan - NED at 4 o'clock CET this night, clock definitely in favour of Japanese viewers. :)

Germany U21 just made it out of the group stage. Tough game against Czech Republic. Schulz from Berlin scored. Go Nico!!

he has been an excellent player for hoffenheim but the price paid was obviously a robbery.

he is flexible on the attacking, he can play left and right wing and also behind a striker. Technically he is a great but i think more important is that mentally he is always going for a goal/always knows what to do to set one up. He is excellent on the counter attack and also is a good shot.
At Hoffenheim he was the player who very often "made the difference".
But you know ... it's Hoffenheim.

Defensive ? not really his thing apart of pressing. Also he is a player who needs to have fun playing football. At hoffenheim he had often a certain amount of freedom when attacking.

If somebody had said that wolfsburg/schalke bought him around 20 million euro i wouldn't have been surprised. But 41 million ? too much IMHO. I would have said 20-25 million euro to be more realistic. perhaps 30 million the top end.

Which explains why the price was so high: "what's the highest we can demand" + 30% "because it's an PL club"

EPL being ripped off again. Plus i'm not confident Brendan will get the best out of him but we'll see.

Agreed on Firminho. I'd say he's not as good on the wings than centrally attacking, but he's quite flexible. Think 40 is a bit much. Is that the minimum, read there are certain success rates involved. But 20-25 would be almost not enough I figure as Hoffenheim has the money to keep the player.

30 +30% sounds about right like you said.

saw the Chile vs. Uruguary/Copa america game last nite, Uruguary wont be a threat, Chile played well, uruguay played awful even with Cavani

If they do get him. Its smelling like Gonzalo Higuain saga again.

If he pulls a Brad Friedel and resurges then great, if he declines and becomes Iker Casillas then not so great. Either way £11m gamble worth taking. Considering the shortage of good keepers globally in general.

Feel bad for Ospina because he should be staying and Szczesny leaving but the latter is homegrown so he gets immunity.
