A win for Liverpool, but it feels like a loss - having to take a League Two side to penalties?? Credit to Carlisle for a fearless performance at Anfield, and credit to Bogdan for making three penalty saves.

But no light at the end of the tunnel for Liverpool supporters. The squad has some talent but no identity and no overall plan.

Big upset with Barcelona losing to Celta Vigo 4-1!

Liverpool reject Iago Aspas scored twice in that match...

The irony was not lost on me about Aspas!

Spurs 1 - 2 Flamini

Everyone else won as expected

Fixed that for you! :)

A bad night for Mr Shearer all round then

more bad news for team Colombia, besides James Rodriguez (real madrid) being sidelined for 1 month. Now its Pablo Armero (flamengo) will be out for 6 weeks due to a leg injury. this is bad since eliminatories for Russia 2018 are coming up in October :(...this means that Murillo, Bacca, Jackson, Cuadrado and Teo will have to step it up

Looks like Barcelona will be fighting more in the courts than on the pitch with Neymar and Messi's tax issues!

Failed with their Arda Turan bid as well.

Mourinho is a manager who gets results (for a while). And that's literally all he can lay claim to. Apart from that he's a sad, vindictive, petty, angry little man.

He seems to be jealous of Wenger's tenure at the Emirates.

Also seems like he's genuinely starting to crack

Having Sturridge back is like having a new signing. Will he stay healthy?Liverpool's defense is still terrible, however.

Plenty of goals, but no notable results this weekend except for City's stumble.

Brendan finally gets that quality he's been missing in the final third. Today's results either show how competitive the EPL is or how far behind the top teams are to the rest of Europe.

Speaking of Europe, Messi out for 8 weeks. Done his medial collateral knee ligament. Ouch.

Moaninho fails to beat Newcastle despite a creditable comeback from 2-0 down. Still a bad result considering where they sit and the fact that Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd all won today.

Wonder who's fault it will be this time?

Of course in the 2 minutes I switch over to the Arsenal/Olympiacos game, Barca turns it around.

EDIT: Not a good day for EPL teams in the UCL!

yep. was wondering what happened to the suarez i knew from pool, but he is still alive i see. watching mathieu playing football is a pain though.

The Premier League is perhaps winning the money game in world football, but they risk believing some of their own hype; the Best League in the World does not necessarily contain the best teams...weaker continental teams with lots of European experience can be very dangerous in one-off matches.

The cynical side of me truly enjoys the inverse relationship between the bombast of the top English teams and their fortunes in European competition.

I hate to say it, but bring Suarez (and perhaps Sterling) back to Liverpool and the team is inside the top four and challenging for titles. You only need one or two players of the quality of Suarez to make up for a LOT of other issues within a squad. De Gea, Hazard, Aguero - these kinds of players can paper over cracks in a big way.

Actually, this article raises some interesting points...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/34396301

Particulaly where it highlights that the top 4 aren't always getting their way when it comes to their shopping lists. Could it be that even though the usual top 4 are more than likely still going to be this season's top 4, that the gap is closing?

Certainly looking at results so far, especialy for City & Chelsea, it would suggest that may be the case
