DC 1-2 Columbus

A big away win for Columbus, who now top the standings in the East. The New York Energy Drinks are only two points behind with three games in hand on us, but Columbus is looking pretty good for the playoffs.

We are tied with LA for most goals scored (49) and are second-worst in goals allowed (50). Rollercoaster season. Kei Kamara scored his 21st goal tonight. He is the 16th player in league history to score over 20 goals in a season, and is now six way from the single season record of 27. Could he become the first MLS player to hit 30 league goals in a season?

End of the season is always fun for the East in MLS. The top 4 teams are likely to make the playoffs, the real battle is for teams 5 and 6. Will it be the Canadians or the expansion teams.

I have tickets for the return^Wrevenge leg of tonight's Montreal:New England Matchup. The scoreline really wasn't representative of the game. New England possession and the midfield, and the first two goals were bad luck deflections. Sigh.

Liverpool pay dearly for (particularly Sakho's) clownish defending and Mignole's penchant for weak punches. He's an excellent shot-stopper, but he'd have less shots to stop if he knew how to catch the ball.

Firmino, without doing anything terribly wrong, remains unconvincing. Lots of sterile possession, little coordination up front. Too much shuffling (partially enforced shuffles, to be fair) Sturridge not yet fit, and by the time he gets fit he'll be injured again. Rogers' tactical "flexibility" is simply tinkering rather than pragmatism. Brendan prioritized today's game over the Europa League and ended up a deflating shaky draw in both cases. You could hear a pin drop at Anfield today.

Liverpool are extremely susceptible to any team with any sort of recognizable counterattacking ability, and in today's tactical environment that means you can be beaten by just about any team, regardless of skill level. Liverpool will always have to score at least two goals to win a match. The problem is, Liverpool aren't going to be scoring two goals a match.

This season is toast. Several waves of major financial outlays have resulted in a squad with no sense of purpose or even consistency of composition. Firing Rogers will not necessarily change this either, because Liverpool are out of the Champions League and don't have as much money as the clubs they hope to catch - clubs who continue to make (or at least spend) more money each season.

Brendan doesn't seem to know how to use Benteke's strengths. The goals have really dried up since that fateful season of SAS. And none of the midfielders or defenders are chipping in. Then there's the defending. Will Rodgers survive this season. FSG seem reluctant to let him go either because they don't want to spend money on a new manager or another unknown reason.

Carlo Ancelotti and Klopp are available...just saying. They'd probably get more out of the squad AND be able to attract top talent even without UCL football.

Man U signing Anthony Martial is turning into a good deal, he got two more goals today, helping get the win over Southhampton. De Gea also had a great save in the match.

Ah. This is soccer and not NFL. Got confused when I saw it refer to Football, so maybe putting soccer in the title would distinguish it.

there is also this:

There's something special about that Martial lad. I'm beginning to sound like a broken record here. So cool and composed in the box, he's already made some experienced defenders look pretty bad.

However, it was De Gea that won the three points at St. Mary's. Signing of the summer. (Again, broken record.)

The term "soccer" is of 19th century English origin - so it's not actually a Yank invention.

If we called this the "2015-2016 Association Football Thread" nobody would know what we were talking about. ;)

I think the majority of readers would see the title "football" and not think of soccer. I'm assuming that readers from England are a small minority on a largely American webpage.

Diego Costa has been charged with violent conduct over his outrageous antics in the match against Arsenal. Given that Mike Dean failed to notice any of the offenses, the disciplinary panel is free to throw the book at him. He should be banned for three matches IMO.

I'm assuming that readers from England are a small minority on a largely American webpage.

The readership here is majority American, but football (soccer) is far and away the most watched sport on earth, so I don't think the name should have to be Americanized in the forums - people figure it out quickly. I use both terms interchangeably.

He seems to get away with it more than other players. I wonder what the actual punishment will be?

Violent conduct is usually three matches, and kicking/slapping/punching is usually deemed violent conduct, no matter how wimpy the actual contact was (and lets face it, we're not talking about Floyd Mayweather Jr here).

Diego Costa doesn't get sent off nearly as often as he should. If he finishes a match without at least a yellow card, the ref has failed at his job.
He doesn't cheat though!

Zouma says so, well, that's after saying he does cheat, but that's not what he meant, obviously. He's also deeply upset his comments were misinterrpited. Well, either that or he's upset after Jose put a rocket up his **s!

5 goals in 10 minutes ? is there a name for that ?

That's a "glut." ;) Some great shots in there too. Wolfsburg's defense must be even worse than Liverpool's.

Not shocked at all about Costa's punishment. Serves him right. I hope Carneiro's legal team really socks it to Chelsea - she has been treated disgracefully by Mourinho and the club.

5 goals in 10 minutes ? is there a name for that ? or will it be called "pulling a lewa" from now ... absolutely incredible

looked at my emails for a few minutes only to return to this result in the live-ticker

Had the first half on - in and out of the room, then watched another programme. Came back to the game at 74 minutes; 'Maybe it is a 2nd leg cup game rather than league and they started showing an aggregate score?', nuts. The 5th :).

Cheers,
OW

Spurs 1 - 2 Flamini

Everyone else won as expected...except Newcastle.

Over to you Liverpool.

EDIT: Liverpool through.
