Salah with an off night, only 1 goal scored today. I was optimistic about today, but didn’t expect a 7-goal rampage from Klopp’s boys.

Winning the group is important to avoid awkward ties (c.f. Arsenal in years past), and I don’t think anybody will want to draw Liverpool in this form.

Big Sam’s Everton up next. I imagine that will be a low-scoring match...

@Lord Blackadder I don't think Salah had an off night, to be honest, he was just being a team player yesterday and missed a couple of chances, but that's no big deal. I do like Liverpool's chances in the round of 16, but it will have to go through a lot of solid teams to move forward, especially if they end up against Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, or City.

Oh, I was just being sarcastic. ;) His goalscoring record continues to amaze.

I suspect Liverpool are going to need a kind draw to make it through the knockout round, but they are good enough to beat any team on their day. Just making it to the knockout stage is progress, so I am satisfied.

I see Arsenal sneaked through with a cagey narrow victory! What a night to spend with my Arsenal supporting friend.
And yes it's part of a scheme where you have to befriend one unfortunate football fan! ;)

Actually I know another Arsenal fan who might have smiled at the score line!

Well, yes, it occasioned a smile, agreed. This I cannot deny.

I'd settle for staying up at this stage! Cups are just a distraction for us.

Well, yes. Perspective is everything.

I must say that I derive some comfort and no small satisfaction from Arsenal's seriously good form traditionally - not to mention their record in the FA Cup - this is still a competition with a cachet that few others possess (and I have never forgiven Manchester United for the year they declined to compete, feeling that they were far too good to muck and mingle with the hot-polloi).

Mind you, I feel the same way about the Europa Cup; I'd settle for fourth, rather than busting a gut as Manchester United did last year.

Yes, it is good for public exposure, Tv rights and so on - and sales - I suppose, the old 'branding argument' - good, too, to try out ideas and formations, and see how one copes again unexpected sides with unexpected styles of play.

But, to be quite honest, if I could be assured of third or fourth, I'd cheerfully sacrifice the Europa competition.

I'd sacrifice my right kidney for 3rd or 4th from bottom! :D

But, but, but.......you have but two kidneys.........

Here is a stat to be proud of: (I'm an historian by profession - even if I have temporarily abandoned that august and noble profession for something a little more flighty - aka - political analysis): Anyway, Arsenal were promoted from what had been the old Second Division in 1919......and have been there ever since, the longest uninterrupted stint in what used to be called the First Division (aka the Premiership)....since, oh, since records began.

Lol! I got the same speech from my friend last night!

Did I ever tell you about the time West Ham won the World Cup!

If you're talking West Ham v. Chelsea, I just heard on NBCSN that this loss may have just ended Chelsea's hope for a repeat Premiership title (unless a miracle of sorts happens).
I certainly was. But any hope of a Chelsea title victory was long gone before this game. The title will be Manchester City's this year. Or at a push Manchester United.

A very good day for West Ham. Chelsea's loss gives Liverpool, Arsenal, and Spurs a big opportunity to close the gap to 3rd.

I don't think this loss knocks Chelsea out of the title race - Man City already knocked everyone except Man Utd out of the title race by winning lots of games so far. The other "top six" can just about catch Msn Utd if they go on winning runs, but Man City is just too far ahead.

Very well said.

And I think that Pep Guardiola may have felt - after last year - that he had a point to prove, or to make, and he is certainly dong that.
