Huge win for Liverpool today over their supposed boogeyman side, this is the kind of performance Liverpool fans will want to see in this kind of match, and the kind of performance Liverpool need every week if they are going to push the Mancunians in the league and Champions League.

Some interesting calls - Mane could have been sent off for grabbing the ball while on a yellow, and Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty for some shirt pulling in the box. Benteke missed two pretty solid chances - Kane or Vardy would have scored at least one of them, you'd think. Karius made a mistake to concede the penalty but he does seem to be improving and otherwise had a pretty good match. Zaha was a threat but Palace were shooting blanks today.

Roy's Palace were really tough opposition - big, hardworking, maybe even a tiny bit dirty. They set out to spoil Liverpool's speedy passing movements by keeping the ball in the air as much as possible with longballs and head tennis, and for much of the game they succeeded. Liverpool rarely had any space in the center of the pitch to dribble or move using short passes.

Robertson and Alexander Arnold were excellent again, It continues to amaze me how well Klopp has gotten these young wingbacks to play. They were a constant threat, bypassing Palace's wall of big meaty defenders by running up the wings and putting in dangerous crosses for Mane, Firmino, and Salah.

And, of course, Salah scored again. He was frustrated for much of the match but never stopped tormenting the defenders and you just know he'll get his chance.

Well I for one were very pleased with the result. Just need our players to do the business on the pitch and our fans to stay off it!

I see the match reports applying the hackneyed phrase "winning even when they don't play well" to the Liverpool / Palace match. I don't think that is entirely accurate. Liverpool made a couple mistakes, but overall I think Klopp stuck to his style, put out a full strength squad and they did well against a team that did a good job of countering Liverpool's play.

Liverpool did not win despite playing badly; they won despite playing against a big, physical, hardworking team set up to stop them. Both teams had a little luck, but only Liverpool had Andy Robertson and Mo Salah.

Still waiting on word about Lallana's injury, but it doesn't look good for him, Liverpool or England. Hopefully it is not serious.

It's real scrap down there but Palace are in trouble. Every point feels like counts double at this stage.

Well we are on the same points as Palace with two games in hand. Of course they only count if you win them!
We could go as high as 13th or as low as 18th today. I know which I'd rather!
[doublepost=1522505784][/doublepost]Antonio comes off injured after 9 minutes. But then Mario scores on 14. Hopefully the crowd can get behind the team now.

Zaha starts for Palace which is disappointing for us as I he makes the difference. They are currently a goal up.

We face Southampton in a must win game for both teams. We have to play Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea yet, so we need to win these 6 pointers.
I fear that if we go a goal down there will be trouble again.
The police will be inside the stadium this week, but I'm really hoping the talking points are the football.

Looks your team did well.

Happy Hammer here. A much needed win and a good performance to boot. 6 points between us and the trap door now!

Bye bye West Brom. Should never have sacked Pulis mid-season.
It's been a done deal for a while as far as I'm concerned.

Not usually one to watch the MLS, but caught the highlights of Galaxy vs LAFC.

Zlatan, well what can you say. Simply incredible. You can't really argue with his massive ego when he has the skill to back it up!

Sheer style, agreed.

The guy has class and style - one can forgive a lot, not least that he can still perform with such sublime - and forensic - skill at his stage.

Meanwhile your lot got booed off at halftime!

Yes, I have just been checking what they are up to.

Still nil-all when I last peeked.
[doublepost=1522592360][/doublepost]And now, towards the close, Arsenal lead by two goals to nil.

I am trying to convince myself that it is not always necessary to wine with class, and verve, and grace, and style, that sometimes, the ability to be able to grind out an unbeautiful (let us be honest, an ugly, and uninspiring) victory is every bit as important as a display of élan and grace.

He's got no pace anymore, his legs are probably made of glass now, but technical skill and experience don't fade with age, so in that regard Ibrahimovic is as good as ever.

I doubt he'll hang around very long, but I guess he's already written his page in MLS history.

Agreed about lack of pace, and possibly fragile limbs of glass, but, being able to read lines and moves and angles intelligently - and in advance - means that you can anticipate things, and know in advance where to place yourself strategically and where to place the ball with precision.

While that sort of skill - a three dimensional understanding of space, or who is where, when and why - and this ability of reading a football match like a chess game - is honed and refined with experience, for the top players it is also innate - the very best midfielders have always had it - while some players never master it - but it is something that can more than compensate for a lack of pace, especially if younger legs on the team can supply that deficiency.

Well I'm glad they won. Keeps Stoke where we need them.

Actually, I have been studying the table this afternoon. I am tired of that notorious brittleness, but, in truth, Arsenal improved in the second half and got better as the game progressed.

Still on London clubs: I would love to see Spurs beat Chelsea.

Chelsea are our next game, so I'd prefer (but highly doubt) us beating them!

An Arsenal fan, not sure if serious...

Indeed I am.

Actually, while I am an Arsenal fan, I would hope that I do not harbour some of the nastier myopic notions that are supposed to accompany such an allegiance. Moreover, I am also someone who dislikes the oligarch ownership of Chelsea, and I do rather like Mauricio Pochettino and what (I think) he is trying to achieve.

phew... a good win for Spurs.

An excellent win for Spurs, and for their philosophy, and one that can only serve to hasten the departure this summer of Mr Conte (although, candidly, I have had the sense that, mentally, at least, he has checked out long ago, and, in truth, he never really warmed to living in London or put down roots there; moreover, his family remained in Italy during his first year at Chelsea as I believe that his wife was studying for a degree).

It's going to be a lot harder to qualify for the Champions League, going forward. Chelsea and Arsenal might have stumbled this season but they will be back next season. Man Utd, Liverpool, and Spurs can't afford to take their foot off the gas if they want to keep playing in Europe.

Took a work trip to Europe (my first visit to this continent) - just arrived in Lisbon and I'm disappointed to miss a chance to see a match here. Worse yet - while the Merseyside derby is being played I will be in Belfast presenting at a conference!!! So close, and yet so far away!!!!

P.S. any food recommendations for Lisbon/Belfast are welcome...

P.P.S. flew Ryanair into Lisbon...the less said about Ryanair, the better.

Sorry to hear Antonio will be out until the end of the season with a Hamstring. Leaves us short again. If we could just get a fit Andy Carroll back for a couple of games.

Also I see West Brom have parted ways with Alan Pardew. Not surprising.

The timing is a little bit surprising though. With West Brom pretty much guranteed to get relegated, there is nothing for a new manager to accomplish till the season is over, so instead they will limp along pointlessly under their U-23 coach.

Agree. Maybe it was partly his decision. Let's face it would you want to turn up for work every week for the next 5 weeks so the fans and the press can point out how crap you are? I think I'd rather take another holiday.

Mind you I'm not sure he'll get another shot in the top flight.
