Yes, apparently it was a genuine, honest-to-God foul - as shown by the replay - that merited a penalty and a booking.

Germany, however, will be a bit more energised tonight; they will have to play, otherwise run the risk of being eliminated.

Yeah Germany feels more dangerous for sure. Just hate to see a call like that missed when we have VAR.

holy arrogance storm, i had to switch from fox to telemundo after 5 minutes, that fox color guy needs a heart or a kitten.
good for Sverige, they should have been awarded a PK but Deutschland will never get close call go against them.
rumor has it they paided for all this

Not sure that I believe in that rumour - Germany is not considered to be one of the countries that trails that whiff of cordite where footballing matters are concerned; however, once can argue that karma has a way of showing up, unexpectedly.

Germany is going have to pick-up the pace, being eliminated this early will cause many a heart attack .

Agreed.

If they are eliminated (and it is looking increasingly likely), it will be the first time since 1938 that they have been eliminated in the first round of the World Cup.

Now, they were lucky with the penalty call, and unlucky, or unfortunate in the way that Rudy had to leave the pitch, blood streaming from his nose.

Still, karma, and all that.

Besides, Sweden are playing with some degree of passion and conviction.
[doublepost=1529780978][/doublepost]Well, the second half commences and Germany almost instantly - this is fighting for life time, and they are the defending champions, remember - pull one back, levelling the score.

Psychologically, if you cannot score immediately before half time, well then, a very good time to try to score is immediately after half time.

I'll pass on the Spanish as it is a language I know not at all, and concentrate instead on Germany's wanton profligacy as they fail to convert chance after chance.

At this level, one needs to put away half decent - or even, wholly decent - chances.
[doublepost=1529783102][/doublepost]And, good grief.

Germany have a man sent off (Jerome Boating, universally agreed to have had a deplorably poor first half); they are now down to ten men, with ten minutes to go.

And a draw will only be a fleeting life-line, snatched time until the next match, against South Korea, not anything remotely resembling the safety of qualifying for the second round.

Crikey.

A German goal - from a free kick - in the ninety-fifth minute.

Talk about leaving things - such as salvation of a sort - to - literally - the very last minute.

Germany win by two goals to one.

Yes, but that was too close by far for comfort; the dying seconds of the dying minutes of a game to haul themselves away for the threat of almost immediate elimination, or relying on others for results to go their way.

Mind you, once Germany were down to ten men, Sweden should have killed it.

And, while Kroos did indeed step up - the absence of Ozil and his peculiar if undoubted gifts - even as someone contemplated as a sub - is intriguing.

Massively intriguing, is, too, that Sweden's strategy was lackluster. Regardless of the fact that the goal was a last-minute miracle, Germany deserved it - and was monumentally close several times. You cannot play so relegated. You cannot play so defensively. They gifted away 80 meters of field-length. They should have been more offensive. They weren't, and they got what was coming - albeit in the last second.

Agreed.

Germany had scores - or at least dozens - of chances (some good, some excellent, some merely okay - but it was an appallingly profligate waste of opportunity) that they failed to convert; in the second half - especially when Germany were reduced to ten men - Sweden failed to impose themselves on the game, contenting themselves with a point, mentally.

Yes, they could have killed if off, convincingly, earlier. They didn't.

The poorest decision was contenting themselves with one point, as the feasibility of a triumphant outcome wasn't annulled - in spite of Germany's sheer firepower, and especially so when you consider that Germany was a player down.
They made a dismal, egregious decision which resulted in the denouement we have seen.
